Seven hundred years before Jesus the Messiah was born in Bethlehem, the prophet Isaiah prophesied about his birth saying, For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace (Is. 9.6). Isaiah told the people that one day God will send a Deliverer, a Messiah, and that this Messiah will be “Mighty God.” This is the wonder of Christmas. The wonder of Christmas is not us human beings being nice to each other once a year, or the fact that many of us take our loose change or a few dollars from our pockets and deposit them in a Salvation Army pot. The wonder of Christmas is not that Christmas shopping provides a needed boost to our ailing economy, or that we get to decorate our houses with lights and eat more than we should. The wonder of Christmas is that God took on human flesh and entered this world through the womb of the Virgin Mary. This is an awesome mystery and a great wonder that God came to this world “in flesh.” Listen to the way the great Saint Augustine described the mystery of the incarnation back in the 5th century. He wrote:

The claim that God manifested Himself in the person of the 1st century Jew named Jesus of Nazareth was not some later 4th century invention to bolster the political fortunes of the Emperor Constantine as alleged by The Da Vinci Code and other similar works. Calling Jesus God was not a late evolutionary development. One of the most famous recent church historians was a man named Jaroslav Pelikan, who taught for many years at Yale University. He pointed out in his writings, that the oldest Christian sermon that we have, the oldest account of a Christian martyr, the oldest pagan report about the church, the oldest liturgical prayer and the oldest Christian song, if you go back to the very earliest message by a Christian martyr, if you go back to the earliest pagan report, the earliest prayer, the earliest hymn, every one of them, refers to Jesus as Lord and God.

The wonder of Christmas is that God took on human flesh and entered this world through the womb of the Virgin Mary.

He it is by whom all things were made, and who was made one of all things; who is the revealer of the Father, the creator of the Mother; the Son of God by the Father without a mother, the Son of man by the Mother without a father; the Word who is God before all time, the Word made flesh at a fitting time, the maker of the sun, made under the sun; ordering all the ages from the bosom of the Father, hallowing a day of to-day from the womb of the Mother; remaining in the former, coming from the latter; author of the heaven and the earth, sprung under the heaven out of the earth; unutterably wise, in His wisdom a babe without utterance; filling the world, lying in a manger. Augustine went on to write: Oh food and bread of Angels, the Angels are filled by you, but where are you for my sake? In a mean lodging, in a manger. He who rules the stars, sucks at the breast; he who speaks in the bosom of the Father, is silent in the Mother’s lap. …Behold him lying in a manger; he is reduced to tininess, yet He has not lost anything of Himself; He has accepted what was not His, but He remains what He was. Thus behold the infant Christ. God reduced to tininess. The wonder of Christmas!

In other words, if you dig down to the roots of Christianity what you will not find is a discussion of Jesus being a great man. What you will find at the very roots is that Jesus is Lord and God. And as the English writer C.S. Lewis said: What is most interesting, what we must remember is that the people who were saying that Jesus is Lord and God are the least likely people on the face of the planet to have said it, if it wasn’t true.

The folks who were running around the Roman Empire proclaiming Jesus is God were Jews. The writers of the vast bulk of the New Testament were Jews. And if ever there were a group of people on the face of the planet who were fiercely monotheistic, who believed in the unity of God, the oneness of God, if ever there were a group of people who by culture, by history, by their frame of mind would be disinclined to believe that God would take on human flesh, it was the Jewish people. And yet, these were the people who went around saying, “God came down. God came as a man.” The wonder of Christmas – God came down. God took on flesh and lived in the world that he made. If you believe this, then don’t you want to reorient your life around the God who visited our planet at Christmas? And isn’t it a unique privilege that we get to share with others the wonder of Christmas?

December 2009 Congregational Letter By Rich Nathan

G.R.O.W.S. is an acronym to illustrate our discipleship courses, events and behavior that will essentially help you “grow” in your relationship with Jesus Christ. As a disciple of Christ, we want to continually grow in our faith while avoiding complacency. These five characteristics represent areas of your life in which you will mature the longer you follow Jesus:

Giving - God desires His people to give generously of their service, money, time, talents and possessions. We give because He first gave His Son Jesus to us.

Relationships - God desires His followers to live in loving, healthy relationships with others. This involves being part of a Christian community that promotes healing and connecting with others as they grow in Christ. Outreach - God desires every person on Earth to trust His Son, Jesus, and enter into a personal relationship with Him. As Jesus’ followers, we participate in His mission to the world, reaching out to the least, lost, last and the lonely of our world; by sharing and demonstrating the Good News of God’s Kingdom. Worship (and Prayer) - God desires His followers to worship Him and to seek Him in prayer. Worship and prayer are our response of love to God, both in a public and private setting, based upon who He is, what He has said, and what He has done. Spiritual Empowerment - God desires our lives to be filled with His Spirit so that we minister in the power of the Spirit, exercise all the biblical gifts of the Spirit, and express the fruit of the Spirit.

You may be stronger in some areas than others, but a true disciple is to exhibit all these characteristics. At Vineyard Columbus, we have organized many of our classes and training sessions around this acronym to guide you in your growth as a disciple. To help you assess what area(s) of spiritual growth in which you may need further assistance, we have developed a Spiritual Assessment & Growth Plan. You can locate this tool in the G.R.O.W.S. Booklet (at the Info Counter in the main lobby) or online at www.vineyardcolumbus.org.

University. He admitted to being somewhat of a music snob but had grown to love the worship music at Vineyard and decided to audition without divulging his credentials. While Jim Ed had his heart set on playing drums, Michael Hansen, the then Worship Pastor, was more interested in using him as a keyboard artist to fill a need. So Jim Ed began serving on a team led by Sarah Higgins who modeled that worship is all about worshiping God, not about self. Jim Ed has since begun playing drums with current Worship Pastor Clarence Church. Serving on worship teams has had a profound impact on Jim Ed’s life. He realized that he had used his gift selfishly but now wanted to know God better, to worship Him fully, and to be able to enjoy and use the gift God had given him to glorify Him. Even though Jim Ed had opened for music legends like Ray Charles and James Brown, he had never experienced anything like playing for God’s glory. He found serving on the worship team a very freeing experience because now it was all about Jesus. Despite the time involved to rehearse and play at weekend services, Jim Ed says it’s too fun to be called “service” since playing on the worship team is now his favorite “gig.” He feels blessed to be part of the worship community at Vineyard Columbus. Rehearsals are very professional, but there is time for relationship and prayer for each other. Last Christmas Eve one of Jim Ed’s daughters had an emergency appendectomy. Despite a hectic schedule, the worship team called and texted him between rehearsals and services to offer support. When Jim Ed was laid off from his day job in January, Clarence Church and others were a huge encouragement to him, too. Jim Ed has found another way to give back to God in the Worship Arts Ministry. He admits to not being a great guitarist or vocalist, but he has stepped out of his comfort zone to lead worship music for his small group. While he used to worry about what people thought of him as a musician, he can now close his eyes and play for God’s glory. He often reflects on Rich Nathan’s analogy of the church not being a place where members sit in the stands and watch the pastors on the field but rather the pastors are on the sidelines encouraging the congregation who are involved on the field. Jim Ed urges others to step out and offer whatever gift God has given them for His glory. The Worship Training Center classes can help develop those who feel called to lead worship music, and Jim Ed is certain others will feel blessed and honored to serve as he does. To find out more about serving in the Worship and Arts Ministry, contact Carrie Mitchell, 614.259.5310 or carrie. [email protected].

Welcome Andy Saperstein, the most recent addition to the pastoral staff at Vineyard Columbus! He will be splitting his time between International Ministries and our One2One Mentoring Program. Andy and his wife Kathy have counted VC as home for more than twenty-seven years, though most of that time they have lived overseas or out of state. Sent by the church in 1991, they served for nearly four years among Afghan refugees in Peshawar and Quetta, Pakistan. In 1998, they moved to Samarqand, Uzbekistan, where they led a team that established a broad educational development program and invested deeply in birthing local congregations. Andy and Kathy recently moved here from New Haven, Connecticut, where Andy served for over three years as the Associate Director of a Muslim-Christian dialogue and reconciliation program at Yale University. Andy holds a Ph.D. in Linguistics, and Kathy, an ethnomusicologist, holds a B.A. in Music Education and an M.A. in Intercultural Communications. Andy and Kathy have four children: Claire (21) and Emma (19), who are students in the Chicago area; and Maggie (13) and Joseph (11), who live with Andy and Kathy in their old, quirky house with a big yard in Uptown Westerville. You can reach Andy at 614.259.5347 or andy.saperstein@ vineyardcolumbus.org
