PRESERVATION AT ITS BEST

Each year, the City of Adel’s Historic Preservation Commission recognizes property owners for their efforts in preserving their historic property for future generations. The 2021 Preservation At Its Best Award goes to Bob and Nadine Law for their property at 1210 Grove St. This property is truly an Adel landmark. In researching the property’s history, it appears to have been built after the Civil War in the late 1870s or early 1880s. It was sold in March 1888 to J.W. Russell and renovated later that year. It was known as the “J W Russell Homestead” and was held in the family until March 1946. Bob and Nadine Law acquired the property in July 1987. Through Bob and Nadine’s efforts to preserve the historical integrity, they obtained the original architectural drawings of both the initial construction and the

renovation. “On behalf of the Adel Historic Preservation Commission and the City of Adel, we extend our thanks and sincere appreciation for Bob and Nadine’s efforts in preserving an Adel landmark for future SUNDAY HIGH 94 | LOW 68

THE WORLD MAY NEVER KNOW

FROM THE PUBLISHER

It may feel like 1985 again, but it’s not. The CocaCola company is changing its formula for Coke Zero, and this feels all too reminiscent of the New Coke debacle in 1985 when a new flavor of Coke was introduced to the masses. Some called that recipe change incredible. Others called it incredibly stupid. But through it all, brand loyalty was redefined in a way few could have imagined. Was it all part of Coca-Cola’s master plan, or was it just dumb luck? The Coca-Cola team was silent. The best answer may come from the owl in the Tootsie Roll commercials: “The world may never know.” I may have been one of the few who actually liked the New

Coke flavor, at least from what I remember. It lasted until 1992 when it was renamed to Coke II and then met its ultimate demise in 2002. Coca-Cola launched Coke Zero in 2005 and left it mostly unchanged until 2017 when it tweaked the recipe and rebranded it as “Coca-Cola Zero Sugar.” The new version, complete with a new packaging design in red instead of black, will be rolled out in the United States this month. The company says the new product will taste even more like the iconic Coca-Cola. But I don’t want Coke Zero to taste more like Coke. I want it to taste like Coke Zero. I enjoy a can of Coke Zero on ice in the afternoons. It is my soda of choice. Will I adjust to the new flavor? Will others? Or will this be another lesson in brand

loyalty? Change is difficult, especially as we grow older. I embraced New Coke in 1985, but I was only 17 years old and drank very little soda at the time. I have been drinking Coke Zero for 16 years. That puts some perspective into all this. As typical, new products are not geared to those of us who are 50 and older. The youngsters are the target market. We will be dead soon, especially those of us who have been drinking diet colas for decades. Hmmm. Have a great week, and thanks for reading. n Shane Goodman President and Publisher [email protected] 515-953-4822, ext. 305

SWEET CORN FESTIVAL PARADE LENGTHENED

The Adel Chamber of Commerce Sweet Corn Festival Committee, in conjunction with the Adel Kiwanis Club, has decided to expand the official festival parade route this year. The expansion will allow for spectators to more comfortably view the parade. It is hoped that the change will reduce congestion on Main Street while allowing people to

view the parade as it turns to proceed west on Prairie Street. The new route will also allow for an easier transition onto Highway 6 at the 14th Street intersection. The starting point of the parade on Brickyard Road will not change. No preregistration is required. Questions can be directed to Scott Gavin with the Adel Kiwanis Club, 515-745-7107. n
