1 Corinthians Author: Paul Date: 56 AD Paul wrote this epistle from Ephesus on his 3rd missionary journey after receiving news of problems in Corinth. Destination: Corinth The church in Corinth was established by Paul on his second missionary journey 50-51 AD (see Acts 18). At that time Corinth was the capital of the Roman Province of Achaia (Southern Greece). It was a key port city of about 700,000 people. Corinth became synonymous with moral corruption. It was the home of the Temple of Aphrodite where 1,000 prostitutes practiced their trade in the name of religion. The city became notorious throughout the Roman World. Paul stayed in Corinth for about 18 months, living in the home of Aquila and Priscilla, while preaching and practicing his trade of tentmaking. Theme: Correcting Carnal Christians This epistle was written to correct carnal Christians. Paul confronts factions, immorality, lawsuits, and abuse of the Lord’s Supper. He also answers questions raised by the Corinthians about marriage, food offered to idols, regulation of public worship and the resurrection. Key Verse: 19

“Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, 20 for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.” 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 (ESV)

The Nature of the Battle: 3“

For though we walk in the flesh, we are not waging war according to the flesh. 4For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds. 5We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ,” 2 Cor. 10:3-5 (ESV)

Lies of the Enemy:  I have to hold it all together.  I can’t change.  My worth is based in my performance.
