1 Timothy Evidence seems clear that shortly after Paul's first Roman imprisonment (about 62-64 A.D.) Paul wrote his first letter to Timothy in Ephesus, where he had been assigned by Paul. At about the same time he wrote to Titus in Crete. During his second imprisonment he wrote his second letter to Timothy (about 66-67 A.D.). Since the 18th century these three letters have been referred to as the "Pastoral Epistles." Timothy, whose name means "one who honors God," had been taught the Scriptures from early childhood by his mother and grandmother. Paul led him to Christ on his first missionary journey while in the city of Lystra, a Roman province of Galatia. On Paul's second missionary journey he revisited Lystra and Timothy joined him and for the rest of Paul's life became his disciple, friend and coworker, being called by Paul his "son in the faith." In this letter Paul encourages young Timothy to stand firm in the truth in the face of false teachers. He encourages Timothy to become an example to others, to exercise his spiritual gifts, and to "fight the good fight of faith." He gives instructions on conduct in the church and instructions on the conduct of a true minister of the Gospel. (3:15-16; 6:11-12). First Timothy along with Titus contains the most complete description of church leadership and organization in the Bible, including the qualifications of pastors and deacons. In this letter Paul issues five clear charges to Timothy (1:18-20; 3:14-16; 4:11-16; 5:21-25; and 6:20-21). You will learn from this letter much about not only Timothy but about Paul. Read it as it is, a personal letter to Timothy and be encouraged as you "fight the good fight of faith."
