in the kitchen Forget spending a fortune on lighting. A trio of globe pendants won’t break the bank.
A display of stylish accessories on open shelves looks rich.
Give your island new (pricey-looking) life by adding a surface that runs down the side.

graphic tile backsplash
A backsplash may cover only a small area, but if you choose a powerful pattern, the impact can’t be ignored. Bold cement tiles, like the ones shown above, are a kitchen style favorite. Or look for ceramic versions, which are equally eye-catching but generally price out for less.

Thanks to digital printing and new technology that masks edges and corner seams, laminate counters are now a convincing copycat. The style shown here, Carrara Bianco by Formica, starts at $25 per square foot installed (formica .com), compared with marble, which starts at about $50 per square foot.

copper canisters
Gleaming containers look more like jewelry for your countertop than food storage. Buy ones that boast a lacquered finish on the label. They have a protective coating that keeps the copper from developing a patina over time. Handwash with dish soap and water, using a soft sponge to avoid scratches.

Here’s a chic design move: Replace a bank of upper cabinets with a wall of thick (two inches looks nice and substantial) shelves, and style them with your dishes, serving pieces, even art. You can find ready-made MDF versions online. Or, for a custom look, have a hardware store cut standard 2-inch-by10-inch pine boards to size, and coat them with glossy white paint. Float them on the wall or mount them with curvy brackets.

globe pendant lights
Get a big-impact moment without dipping into your vacation budget by hanging a group of globe pendants over a kitchen island. To space them out, multiply the diameter of your light by three, and use that number as the distance between fixtures, measuring from center to center. As for style, opaque, brass-accented, and clear all look opulent.

thick chopping block
A hefty board equals a serious (-looking) cook. Condition it at least once a month with foodgrade mineral oil, and use it only for produce; fish, meat, and poultry should get a plastic board. Wash with dish soap and water after each use, and dry thoroughly with a clean towel to avoid warping. If your board is reversible, flip it every few weeks for even wear.

a bold-pattern Roman shade
Pick a sumptuous fabric and turn a window into a work of art. Since you need only about two yards per shade for a standard 36-inch-by48-inch window, spring for a slightly pricier style. Kravet, Schumacher, and Thibaut all offer statementmaking options.

Even a touch of this luxe material looks lavish. Pepper your counters with small, affordable pieces: a crock, a rolling pin, or a cheese board.

an antique-looking rug
Notice we said antique-looking! Faux aged rugs can be found for less than $100, but the posh look they lend is priceless. You can buy wool or opt for durable, easy-to-clean polypropylene. Overdyed styles and busy patterns will also help hide heavy use and spills.

herb topiary
Seriously easy upgrade: Swap out your current knobs and pulls for brass ones. The finish is swank, but the price isn’t steep. If you want to go all in, we love them paired with soft gray cabinets, like the ones shown here. For a similar look, try Fog by PPG Paints.
What is it about sculptural plants and well-heeled owners? Herb varieties are perfect for the frugal-minded: Snip the leaves and use them for cooking.

peel-and-stick floor tiles
Imagine huge decals that look like pretty patterned tiles. These imposters can be laid over any surface, though large, flat expanses—like vinyl, wood, and linoleum—work best. They’re made of the same material used for those sticker advertisements on grocery store floors, meaning they’re moisture-resistant and durable enough to handle heavy foot traffic for up to three years.
