RLC Office

Facilities Ministry

The RLC office has been a busy place during this year of Grow! We have four wonderful part-time administrative assistants to staff the “front” and “back” office: Linda Satrom, Jan Harbour, Kay Berthiaume, and Angela Paige. They provide a welcoming environment and a listening ear to all who call or stop in, while still completing a vast array of administrative work to support all areas of ministry. I am so grateful for their continued dedication and commitment to Roseville Lutheran Church! We are blessed to have numerous volunteers assist on a regular basis with print production, data entry, mailings, worship folder assembly, worship CD distribution, special projects and much more. “Many hands make light work” is a saying I see lived out on a daily basis in the church office and around tables in the Lobby or Commons, as we take on whatever work needs to be done while visiting, laughing, and getting to know new people. As Roseville Lutheran moves ahead into the year of Serve! and seeks to fulfill what God is calling us to do, the office team will continually strive to provide efficient and cost-effective support for all areas of ministry. As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace. -1 Peter 4:10

The dedication on the cornerstone of the 1996 addition states, “To God be the glory.” This message has been consistent since RLC was first organized as Rosetown Lutheran Congregation in the fall of 1942. It was created by a small group of families who felt the need for their children to have a place to learn Christian values, and as a community of faith. In 1943, the first church service was held in what was the first permanent church structure in what is now the city of Roseville. Since that time the church has seen so many additions and changes, but the dedication and purpose of the church still remains the same. I’m grateful to be entrusted with the care of this foundation of such giving and sacrifice. I’m also grateful to all who continue to give through their offering of time, financial support, or by other means. I would like to thank all those who have volunteered on seasonal projects such as the Christmas Mural and the Easter Well. These projects help to create an environment to celebrate God, welcome others into our community, and join in fellowship as Christians. As you know, rust never sleeps, nor does dirt, wear, or erosion. The International Facilities Management Association reports that facilities’ annual deterioration rate is 2% and for older fa-

cilities or those that have not been properly maintained that deterioration rate jumps to 4% or more annually. Our newest additions to the complex, the Luther Commons and the Worship Center, are now 18 years old. This year the east side of both the school and the 1986 office building received a long overdue mortar tuck point, caulking and painting treatment and the Social Hall was painted. This year we have made an effort to cut back on spending. Still, our parking lots and sidewalks are badly in need of repair. Over the past year we have plugged more than a few holes in the dyke both literally and figuratively. Rather than just treading water, we have tried to be proactive in heading off major problems and in cost savings through improvements in energy efficiency. Once again I would like to thank all who have helped through generous gifts to the building fund, our great group of volunteers, and our custodians whose endless efforts keep us up and running. I would also like to thank the 1948 Building committee for their commitment to preserving our past, to the Design Team and Site Beautification Committee for their investment and upgrades in the present, and the Facilities Development Committee for their efforts in growth and forward thinking.

RLC staff members are hugely thankful for our volunteers. Thank you so much for all you do for our church and ministry!

Finance Committee

The Finance Committee meets monthly to review and discuss Roseville Lutheran’s financial position. In addition to reviewing financials, the Finance Committee provides insights and recommendations on numerous financial policy questions. The topics we cover range from participating in RLC budget discussions to health care tax questions and credit card policies. We are blessed with varying opinions and honest conversation, but most of all with knowledgeable professionals who are willing to volunteer their time to make a difference at Roseville Lutheran Church. Thank you!

Finance Office by Paddy Emerson, Financial Manager

Thank you to all of the volunteers who keep our finance office going. We could not accomplish everything we do without your faithful service. Our counting teams come weekly to assure that the offering is counted in an accurate and timely manner. Our Accounts Payable volunteer assures that we process invoices from our vendors and partners in ministry. We are thankful to volunteers who help us with mailings and data entry projects as needed. God provides us so many resources; it is truly a blessing to partner with all those who serve at Roseville Lutheran Church.

Hospitality Ministry

by Connie Marchio, Hospitality Manager In the 3 ½ months that I have been able to serve for this very busy church, I feel I have been able to use my background in the restaurant and catering business to make a small difference. Once again, I could have not been able to do this without all the volunteers that put their time and energy into this job. As I was talking to some of the volunteers, I had said that I am waiting to wake up from this dream . . . Thank you for letting me serve you.

Music Ministry

by John Helgen, Director of Music Ministry

O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his steadfast love endures forever! - Psalm 118 Thanks to all the RLC musicians - singers, ringers, and players of all ages and descriptions – for saying “Yes!” It’s a pleasure to work with you as we lead the congregation in song, share music with each other, grow together in faith, and share the message of God’s love for us all. At present, we have four vocal choirs (Senior, Youth, Children, Marys and Marthas), two handbell choirs, three ensembles leading 11:00 a.m. worship, the RLC Brass, and RLC Jazz. In addition to these groups, there is a whole host of individuals who serve regularly as vocal and instrumental soloists, cantors, accompanists, and ensemble members for the wide variety of musical needs and opportunities that we have. Highlights from the past year: In the summer, RLC Jazz went on the road to lead Sunday worship at Christiania Lutheran in Lakeville, and also played for the 5k/3k RUN/ Walk/Roll and led the outdoor worship service which followed. RLC hosted the Augsburg Fortress summer music clinic for the second consecutive year. Members of the brass ensemble provided worship music at Zion Lutheran in Cloquet, MN. In September, musicians from the 11 a.m. service participated in the “Rock the Lot!” outdoor concert event for Welcome Week. In October, Reformation Sunday was celebrated with music from

Martin Luther’s “German Mass” with the Senior Choir, RLC Brass, and Martha Mutch, organist. In November, the Festival Choir kicked off rehearsals in preparation for the Christmas Festival Concert, and the Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra played its first concert at RLC to a near-full house. The Saturday 5 p.m. worship services for Advent featured a musical ensemble with violin, mandolin, guitar, bass, and vocals with the theme “Be Still My Soul.” A holiday concert was presented by the Greater Twin Cities Youth Symphonies on December 3, and on December 15, the RLC Christmas Festival Concert was presented with the theme “Unto Us a Child Is Born.” On December 20, a choral concert was presented by Roseville Area High School. Many musicians and choirs assisted with our five Christmas Eve worship services. On December 31, the jazz group served again as musical leaders for RLC’s annual New Year’s Eve worship. In January, members of the Senior Choir participated in a weekend retreat at Camp Wapogasset in Amery, WI, and RLC Brass presented a “Brass Connection” concert along with the Blue Waters Brass and the Longfellow Brass Quintet. On February 10, RLC Jazz participated in the “Mardi Gras Meet Ball” sponsored by St. Timothy Lutheran, and on Feb 13, we commenced our Lenten journey with our Ash Wednesday worship, with mid-week Wednesday services led by an instrumental ensemble with guitar, mandolin, bass,

and piano, plus vocals. A brass concert in tribute to Norm Herzog was presented on February 24. In March, RLC Jazz released its first recording, “Let It Shine!” Our Holy Week and Easter worship services included numerous soloists, the Festival Choir, the 16 piece RLC Brass and Percussion ensemble, and the intergenerational Easter Choir backed up by the Praise and Worship Band with horn section. On April 21, we hosted a concert by the Men’s Choir from the Norwegian Lutheran Mindekirken, and on the final weekend of April, the handbell choirs served as worship leaders for the 5:00 and 9:00 worship, assisted by members of the RLC Brass, all conducted by Lori Haaland. On May 12, the Senior Choir and RLC brass led the music for the farewell worship for Pastor Craig Hanson. RLC Jazz presented a concert for Minnesota Braille Evangelism and also led worship for the ELCA St. Paul Area Synod Assembly. On May 18, the house was filled to overflowing for a concert presentation of Beethoven’s 9th Symphony by the Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra and the Minnesota Chorale. Thanks to the many, many participants who gave their gifts of talent and time to make music ministry happen this year at RLC. Special thanks to Martha Mutch, organist, and to our ensemble directors – Sharon Boyce, Lori Haaland, Kristina Olson, and Elizabeth Windnagel. And we continue to thank God for daily breath with which to sing praises.

Children’s Ministry by Kim Rehfeldt, Director of Children’s Ministry

As Director of Children’s Ministry, I look forward to the variety and opportunity this area of ministry at Roseville Lutheran Church affords. Children’s Ministry is so much more than Cornerstone, our Sunday Morning Children’s Education Hour. It is special events and activities, summer ministry, worship, faith milestones, serving, mentoring and equipping children, families and youth. On this page you will find just a few examples of how Children’s Ministry impacted children and families in the past year. Cornerstone Ministry led the way in this year of GROWing in faith and relationships. Thank you to Julie Hanson, Assistant Director of Children’s Ministry, for taking the lead of Cornerstone. Her passion for reaching kids with the Gospel is evident every Sunday morning. Of the 63 Cornerstone volunteers that gathered in small and large groups each week to hear and experience how much God loves and cares for each of us, 24 were youth. Also, special recognition goes to Steve and Jeannie Anderson, for training up our little ones in faith for more than 20 years. Cornerstone Service Projects, for Cornerstone Kids and their families, included Pajama Day, where the kids and their shepherds attended Cornerstone in their pjs and collected 300 pairs of pajamas for those in need. Cornerstone also participated in The Big Wrap and wrapped 100 Kitchen and 75 Bath Bundles for Bridging and decorated 100 lunch bags for Meals on Wheels.

21 kindergarten through 6th grade young people presented the musical Levite Genes in worship in February. The musical shares the story of the Levites of the Old Testament and how important it is to prepare our hearts and minds for worship. Summer Son-sation offered a variety of 27 day camps for 3 year old through 6th grade children where they learned new skills, met new friends, studied scripture and worshiped. Son-sation was staffed by 19 exceptional youth and young adults who not only led the camps but also mentored a life of faith to the participants. After 17 summers, Summer Son-sation is taking a break in 2013 and will be back in 2014 with new and expanded opportunities. One of the highlights of the year for me is the First Communion Workshop and Seder Meal. Early on a Saturday morning in March, the 5th graders and their parents gathered to learn about this important Sacrament and to bake bread for their First Communion. On Maundy Thursday, before receiving their First Communion in worship, the communicants and their families shared in a Seder Meal, similar to the Passover meal Jesus shared with his disciples at the Last Supper. This meal illustrates the promises of the Old and New Testaments for our salvation. A small group of youth and young adults led worshippers at the Good Friday Family Worship. They recounted the story of Jesus’ final week

on earth in a unique way using fluorescent paint and black lights. Following the worship, children and adults gathered to make a God’s Eye to display at home to remind them that God is always watching over them. In its 21st year, Advent Activity Day is always a highlight for the 2 year olds through 6th graders. Here, the kids make craft items that they can use at home year after year to prepare for the coming of the Christ Child at Christmas. Many thanks go out to Debby McCann, who has coordinated this activity for all 21 years. The Cornerstone Kids shared the story of the Nativity through lessons and carols in the month of December. Children’s Ministry brought Peder Eide, a popular Christian musician, to RLC on a cold Saturday evening in January to lead us in Taste Worship. Using the words of Psalm 34:8a, “Taste and see that the Lord is good,” those attending experienced that through music, scripture, conversation, and tasty treats. After spending 22 of my 33 years in ministry at RLC, I continue to be blessed by this congregation. Thank you for your continued support and encouragement of me, but more importantly, thank you for your passion and support for nurturing the faith of children and families. In the year of transition ahead, it is my prayer that God will continue to bless RLC as it serves God in ministry to the community and brings Christ’s light into the world.

Child Care Ministry by Sue Menier, Director of Child Care He said to them, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the Kingdom of God belongs to such as these.” - Mark 10:14 How time flies… so the saying goes! It has been seventeen years since we first opened our doors! The infants we started with will be graduating from high school this year! Oh my, they do grow up on us don’t they? One little Jesper Horsted, who started with us as a two-year-old, is now playing on the Roseville Raiders boys basketball varsity team! It is so fun watch him during the season and cheer him on as a young adult! Linda Borgstrom, Shama Dahal, and Jenny Carlson continue to serve with warm and caring hearts! They bring lots of joy, laughter, and tons of sunshine into our daily lives at RLCC. Thank you staff for all that you do! Chris Taylor continues to rent our lower level. He maintains our household by cleaning on weekends, shoveling snow as needed, emptying garbage bins and a whole host of other duties when we need them done. Thank you Chris! Our children continue to enjoy “Growing with Music.” Each Wednesday, a music therapist comes and spends time in song, dance, and music theory with our little ones. We also have “The Tumble Fun Bus” come twice a month. The bus itself has been converted into a gymnastic play land complete with a zip line! There is no greater joy than to observe a bus load of toddlers and preschoolers having so much fun! Many of our children have attended the preschool throughout the year. How very thankful our working parents are that we are able to walk over and drop off and pick up a few hours later! Thank you to Cindy and her staff for all they do! One of the proudest teaching moments that we as staff instill in our children is to have them use the words “I’m sorry” and “I forgive you.” It is so very sweet to witness a pair of toddlers hug each other and hear both phrases . . . truly a God moment! Those of you that continue to bless our ministry - Thank you! It is an honor to work for the families, the congregation, and more importantly the children who walk through our doors every morning. You are the reason we are called to do what we do . . . to love, to care, to hold in our hearts. Gods greatest of gifts . . . His children!

Roseville Lutheran Church Nursery by Tammy Heiple, Nursery Supervisor

The RLC Nursery provides care throughout the year so that parents are able to Worship, learn and connect with others. While in the nursery, God’s most precious gifts learn about Christ’s love through playtime, prayer, stories, and crafts. Our nurturing staff members provide care during Worship services, Bible study, classes, meetings, and special events. We also provide three sections of Parents Morning Out on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings. During PMO, parents are able to work, run errands, connect with a friend, schedule an appointment, or simply catch their breath. Children in PMO build social skills and classroom skills to prepare for or supplement preschool. We are currently accepting registrations

for the 2013 - 2014 school year. We are hoping to fill four sessions of PMO, so as to be able to continue to provide this valuable service and to raise funds to support child care for Worship and other events. The Nursery is an important part of Children’s Ministry. We have been blessed with dedicated staff that care for and guide our youngest members. Thank you to Kay, Kristen, Sarah, Shama, and Katherine for following your calling to work with our precious little ones. Welcome to Jamie, Heidi, Jenny, and Lara; we are blessed to have you join the Nursery team! Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it. - Proverbs 22:6

Roseville Lutheran Preschool by Cindy Laszewski, RLC Preschool Director

Greetings from the 94 families currently enrolled at Roseville Lutheran’s Preschool! We have had a wonderful school year with so many great memories. Your support is never taken for granted. We are very thankful for the funds from Mission and Outreach that help us maintain a great school with affordable tuition for all families of young children. Thanks also to those who give special gifts for scholarships, and, of course, for your support of the poinsettia sale. We are so thankful to A. Johnson & Sons Floral. We are ever mindful of our responsibility to our families and to Roseville Lutheran Church. Registration for the 2013-2014 school year is now open to the community! Please call Cindy at 651.488.6887 to arrange a visit to the school, or for more information. The following is one of the thank you letters we recently received from a Roseville Lutheran Preschool parent:

Thank you for all you do for the children. In particular, thank you for the religious alphabet book for Christmas. I’m glad she’s in a program that includes prayer and reference to God. That was thoughtful. Thanks also for putting on the Christmas program. We’re still talking about that. She’s proud she had a gift to give us. By the way, we’ll enjoy those decorations and the ornament for years to come. Thanks for the thoughtful touches. It’s so nice to have a program for the whole family, especially the grandparents. I really appreciated it. You should know that I liked your program best out of the four [preschools] I considered. I am glad to have the conferences and the chance to volunteer. I appreciate the extra efforts. Thanks for doing the family book, the Surprise bucket and such things that involve [our child] and let her share with her family. I’m pleased with you all and I appreciate your efforts!

Senior High Ministry

by Megan D. Moroff, Youth Team Lead & Director of 9th-12th Grade Ministry To be honest, every year I go over my 400word limit for our Annual Report. Why, you ask? Because the story of Senior High Ministry at RLC is bigger than any article I could ever write. I’ll do my best to recap what an amazing “Grow” year we’ve had, but please, if you want to truly understand how God is transforming the youth of our church, come be a part of it! Whether you’re a student or an adult, we have a place for you and we invite you to come sit at the table. And now, our year of GROW: • RLC’s Senior High Youth Group, FLOCK, spent Tuesday nights growing in our relationship with God by digging into Bible studies, serving our community with monthly service projects, and strengthening our friendships on fellowship nights. Our time together was holy, inspiring, and fun! “For he is our God and we are the people of his pasture, the FLOCK under his care.” ~ Psalm 95:7

 • Our Thursday morning tradition, Bagels @ Dawn, continues to grow and grow! Attendance was record-breaking this year, and we are so thankful to those who shared morning devotionals with us. • Roseville Lutheran should be proud of the sportsmanship, kindness & teamwork the boys on our Augsburg College Youth Basketball Team dis-

played on the court. Thank you to Dan Lattu and Rich Holleque for coaching them, and congratulations on taking 2nd place this year! • God has blessed us with an incredibly talented Youth Band at RLC. We are sad to see Erik Sneltjes & Hannah Miller graduate, but are excited to watch them go out into the world and share their gift of music. • The M.E.A. Getaway continues to be our youth’s favorite retreat. 27 of us traveled to Camp Castaway for a weekend of strengthening friendships, growing with God, playing fun games, eating great food, and sitting in hot tubs the size of our youth room. Castaway is holy ground, and we can’t wait to go back in October! • Summerfest Live & Silent Auction: Thank you for supporting our youth and their hard work!

Summerfest earned $14,000 to send kids on summer ministry trips. • 49 9th graders affirmed their baptism on Confirmation Sunday and we couldn’t be prouder! • It was an honor to celebrate the class of 2013 at this year’s Graduation Banquet. These kids are going to go change the world. • Last summer, we had over 60 high school students participate in our trips to Camp Hiawatha, the Boundary Waters, and our Mission Trip to Queens, New York. These trips continue to be the highlight of our summer and we give glory to God for these amazing opportunities and life-changing experiences. We want to acknowledge our brothers who have gone before us, Carter Geyen & Sam Hughes. They will always be a part of our youth group, and are never far from mind and heart. We love them and are thankful for the guidance they continue to provide us. We had an amazing year of growing with God. We are thankful for the life lessons, love & friendships that have blossomed from this journey, and as we look ahead to our year of “serve” we are eager to serve one another, our church, and God. And once again… I’m over my word limit. For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them. ~ Matthew 18:20

Rachel Arends new Director of 5th-8th Gr. Ministry The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, His mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness. –Lamentations 3:22-23 It is with great joy that I introduce myself to you. My name is Rachel Arends and I am the new Director of 5th-8th Grade Ministry! This is an exciting time to join you, as we anticipate lots of positive change in the near future. I feel very welcomed already, and am looking forward to the bright future with RLC and its youth in this adventure we call life! My background includes over six years of working with middle school aged youth and confirmation programs through churches, camp, and Youth Encounter. With these experiences, I have had the joy of being able to combine three of my greatest passions in life: Youth ministry, travelling, and music. I have found myself throughout the world, forming relationships and sharing the love of God through

words, actions, and music. Some of my favorite things include: popcorn, volleyball, the color green, and my cat Henry. At RLC I will be directing Luther League, RAW, Club 56, and Friday Night Live, as well as helping with Confirmation and the Youth Band. I look forward to meeting you all and getting to know you in our future together.

LIFE Ministry Here at Roseville Lutheran Church, we truly believe that life is better together. LIFE Ministry is all about living life together—connecting with God and one other through Jesus Christ, growing in those relationships, serving each other in Jesus’ name, and going out into the world and living life together as “the hands and feet of Christ.” Geared primarily toward adults, LIFE Ministry sponsors events and discipleship opportunities for men, women, and married couples, and we have expanded this year to include discipleship and growth opportunities for moms with babies. We hope to continue this expansion further into family LIFE Group events in the coming year, and to include more opportunities for men, women, and married couples to be involved. by Pete Sherry, Director of LIFE Ministry And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another— and all the more as you see the Day approaching. Hebrews 10:24-25 This has been quite a year of transitions for LIFE Ministry, but God has been so faithful in enabling us to continue to pursue our vision to grow in relationship with Him and each other through Jesus Christ. I’m so thankful for all of the participation and encouragement from everyone who has been involved in LIFE Ministry, from LIFE Group events to Home Group studies. I’d like to particularly thank everyone who gives so readily of their time to make LIFE Ministry happen: LIFE Ministry Leadership Team: Larry Gunderson (chair), Gena Mickley, Tommy and

Cassie Ridge, Maren Schultz, and Dave Hofeldt. Home Groups Team: Keith Gilbert (Chair), Scott Henry, Mary Schultz, and Erik Wolhowe. I’d especially like to thank Pastors David Hanson and Craig Hanson and Pastoral Administrator Dave Booms for welcoming me aboard at RLC and helping me to find my way as I got started here. I truly appreciate the ministry of this church, and it’s been great to be a part of it. I think we’ve had some great successes so far. I’d like to tell you about two events that had a lot of meaning for me. First, the Forgiveness Conference with Dr. Steve Sandage and Dr. Lois Malcolm on Saturday, April 6th, was well attended by people from within and outside our congregation. Attendees remarked that they found the day extremely thought provoking and inspiring. Second, the Premarital Workshop, which I taught

with therapist Rebecca Bednar on April 19th and 20th, was a wonderful time of conversation and growth for the couples who participated. I look forward to seeing the way that they grow in faith and love for God and each other. As we look ahead to the 2013-2014 year, I have high hopes that we will continue to grow together as we serve each other. We are already beginning to plan opportunities for this year. If you are interested in hosting a LIFE Group event, serving on a planning team, or getting involved with LIFE Ministry in some other way, please let me know. I have been so blessed to have been able to come on board as Director of LIFE Ministry midway through this year, and I am excited and eager to see what God has for LIFE Ministry for next year and the years to come!

LIFE Ministry and Fishing from the Right Side of the Boat by Larry Gunderson, LIFE Ministry Team Chair

In John 21 Jesus shows himself to the disciples after the resurrection and tells them to fish on the other side of the boat: Just after daybreak, Jesus stood on the beach; but the disciples did not know it was Jesus. Jesus said to them, “Children, you have no fish, have you?” They answered him, “No.” He said to them, “Cast the net to the right side of the boat, and you will find some.” So they cast it, and now they were not able to haul it in because there were so many fish. - John 21: 4-6 In a recent sermon, Pastor Craig Hanson used the disciples’ fishing off of the one side of the boat as a metaphor. Maybe fishing from the left side was the normal thing to do. Jesus asked them to do something different by asking them to fish on the right side. I appreciate some routine activities in my life such as leaving for and returning home from work at about the same time every day, driving the same route or listening to the same radio station. Our family usually attends the 9 a.m. service at Roseville Lutheran; we often sit in some of the same spots and see many of the same people. Routines can be helpful and comfortable. Relational ministry (Connect-Grow-Serve-Go) at Roseville Lutheran Church challenges us to get out of our usual routines - to shake things up a bit and try something new. Getting away from routine helps us to grow. LIFE Groups are easy opportunities for people with similar demographics to meet each other outside of the church building. These groups meet three to four times per year. The main focus is to meet new people and reconnect with others in the Roseville Lutheran community. The Married Couples and the Men’s and Women’s Life Group events have been successful this past year. One of the Married Couples LIFE Group activities was held at Dr. Chocolate’s Chocolate Chateau. The Men’s LIFE Group hosted a Meet-n-Meat where men visited over grilled fare. There were some familiar faces at the events I attended, but there were also people I had not met before. Plan to participate in LIFE Ministry events in the future as you consider how to fish from the right side of the boat.

Home Groups Help Us Connect and Grow by Keith Gilbert, Home Groups Team Chair Roseville Lutheran Home Groups are small group experiences that help people grow in their relationship with God and one another. The groups are short-term commitments. Groups meet for 4-6 weeks, depending on the topic, and then disband. New groups are then formed for the next topic. This creates a low barrier to entry, and the opportunity to “When I think of what I gain by get to know a variety of people being in a home group and what throughout the year. I would have been doing in my This year, five groups free time had I not been in a home discussed the classic book Prayer by Ole Hallesby in the group there is no contest - home fall. Five winter groups disgroup wins every time!” - David R. cussed the book Crazy Love by Francis Chan. In the spring, four groups were formed to read, study, and discuss some of the parables that Jesus told. Thanks to Intern Pastor Matthew Durance for preparing the discussion guides for the parables study. Betsy and I have really valued our participation in home groups this year. We’ve met new people, acquaintances have become friends, and we’ve continued to learn more and more about God’s amazing love for us. The Home Group Leadership Team (Scott Henry, Mary Schultz, Pete Sherry, Erik Wolhowe, and myself) are working to put together the home groups for next year. Please consider joining a group next fall. You won’t regret it!

Endowment Committee

by Richard Straumann on behalf of the RLC Endowment Committee The RLC Endowment Committee guides the use of the financial gifts designated specifically to “RLC Endowment Fund.” Contributions to this fund are held in perpetuity with the earnings each year distributed as directed by this committee as guided by its established charter. That charter was extensively reviewed in the last year. The Roseville Lutheran Church Legacy Society recognizes individuals who have included RLC as a beneficiary in their will or estate plan, as well as individuals who have made outright gifts of $5,000 or more to the RLC Endowment Fund. This support of the church’s Endowment Fund provides financial resources to RLC to assist the church in carrying out its mission in perpetuity and serves as a lasting reflection of the giver’s values. Also as God’s people, we give thanks in occasions of life and even in death. Tribute or Memorial gifts can be a very tangible way of remembering persons and events that bring thoughts of warmth and thanksgiving to us. More than that, those gifts to the RLC Endowment Fund keep on giving. Annual fundraising includes Love Lights remembering and honoring loved ones. Those Tribute or Memorial Love Lights, with accompanying names on stars, shine down on us and provide another way to see God’s light within all of us.

Contributions to the Endowment Fund are ordinarily deductible for personal income tax purposes and may also reduce estate taxes. Furthermore, contributions of appreciated securities can reduce or eliminate capital gains taxes. Restricted for a special purpose (ask for information) or Unrestricted Use Gifts can be given. The RLC Endowment fund primarily supports grants to further RLC outreach with applications accepted twice annually on May 1 and October 1. Grant application forms are available in the church office or on the RLC website. Serving on the RLC Endowment Committee this past year were Mary Ann Bannerman, Matthew Hoffer, Marianne Mohagen, Carl Mohn, Anthony Richter, Sherwin Singsaas, Richard Straumann, Leanne Van Berkom, and David Werner - Chairperson. Kris Olsen served as our Council Liaison. They may be contacted for RLC Endowment Fund information and assistance. We would encourage all RLC members to consider if and how the Endowment Fund can assist you as you think about ways to leave a legacy gift to RLC in areas that are nearest and dearest to you. With your gifts and prayers we can grow to be an instrument for spreading God’s word and the goodness that comes from it.

Pastoral Call Committee by Vanessa Anderson on behalf of the Call Committee

The RLC Associate Pastor Call Committee was formed and began work in mid-February 2013. The call committee members are Sara Mohn, Melinda Knatterud, Brian Heuer, Ella Maahs, Lee Diedrick, John Christopherson, Mary Beth Seguin, and Vanessa Anderson. The Call Committee is working to call a candidate who can team with existing leadership and staff in order to provide spiritual guidance to all of the congregation, but with a keen interest in Youth and Family. The Committee has recently reviewed the status of all candidate suggestions from the congregation with the Synod and has now received several compelling candidates in order to proceed with next steps. The Committee will now be working to schedule interviews with the candidates received over the summer!

We’ll keep you up to date with call committee news as it happens via the RLC website, e-blasts, updates, and The Table. Stay tuned!

Men’s Discipleship by Don Sandborg, Adult Ed. Ministry Team Discipleship is about being a follower of Jesus Christ; serving, learning, growing and obeying all that Jesus taught us (Matthew 28:1920) and being equipped to live the fullness of life that Jesus said he came to bring us (John 10:10). Men’s discipleship had a few social events including a “Meat N Meet” event in the fall and a Texas Chili night during the winter. In May the Men’s discipleship guys had kitchen duty serving for the Waffle Breakfast Sunday. We had three “Every Man a Warrior” discipleship groups that met on Monday and Wednesday nights and Saturday mornings. Each group completed the three book series over the course of this last year. Being part of a small group is so important for all of us regardless of where we are on our spiritual journey. It is so important to grow in our relationship and walk with Jesus by spending time with Him “one on one” and in small groups of others who seek to be spiritually equipped to be all God made them to be. More offerings are planned for the coming year. I would like to say we will make it worth your while, but it is probably better to say that when you spend time with God and His Word, He will definitely make it worth your while. That is our goal. Please consider joining a group this fall!

Pastoral Care and Health Ministry by Pastor Kris Kurzejeski and Judine Pattinson, Parish Nurse

Pastoral Care and Health Ministry at RLC has experienced growth this year and has also had an engaging year of connecting with one another. • RLC’s Care Team continues to focus on ways to expand their membership and visibility. We are now holding a yearly ceremony commissioning team members during worship. This not only increased congregational understanding about the role of Care Team, it also brought in new volunteers. There are 15 members on the Team and 11 Care Partners. We had a decrease in the number of Care Partners, due to death, for most of the year, but in the last month we have had an increase in the number of requests for services. We also had a decrease in the number of volunteers due to changes in their lives. Therefore we are starting a campaign to increase the number of our volunteers. Our goal is to have at least 2 volunteers assigned to each partner. We also believe that there are many more of RLC’s members approaching a need for Care Team Services. We are, therefore, being proactive in training people so we will be ready for the increased numbers. The team as a whole is supplying between 200 and 250 hours of service every quarter at this point. A wonderful addition to our Care Team support is frozen homemade meals offered by members of the church which have been greatly appreciated by the recipients. • Our Visitation Team continues to be active in delivering communion to our shut-in members. • Our Parish Nurse activities have increased. o Judine has become active in connecting with some of our homebound folks. She worked with Intern Pastor Deb to better formalize our approach to Pastoral Care with Pastors, Interns and Judine having assigned people. We feel that having a consistent visitor is more comforting to people, especially ones with memory issues. o She also is involved with the Care Team and in their initial health care assessment of new clients. She has provided support for the visitors as well as some of their monthly trainings. o She offered a Health Training for members on the “Wellness Wheel” for the 10:10 hour that looked at including spiritual health in a person’s

overall health. She has also offered community health education classes through Lyngblomsten on “How to Talk to Your Doctor Effectively.” o Blood pressures are now being offered at all four services on the first weekend of every month. Up to 20 members on any given weekend have taken advantage of this service. Two people who had high blood pressures reported that they did go back to their doctor and got back on their blood pressure medicine. Five to ten people on a weekend have also taken advantage of this time to come and ask health-related questions. o Judine has also re-established connections with both Lyngblomsten and Fairview Foundation since RLC is an official corporate congregation of both and are therefore eligible for additional support, both physical and financial, for Parish Nurse programming. We also joined the Allina network which will make us eligible for some additional funding for Parish Nurse programing here at RLC. o Judine took the training with Intern Pastor Deb for becoming a Honoring Choices (Advanced Directives) facilitator and will be offering that program to church members in June. o We were also able to run Journey to Bethlehem. This was a 12 week program that encouraged people to combine spiritual growth with physical health activities. As a congregation we averaged 485 miles per week for the 12 week program with a total of 73 people reporting their miles. Judine is taking some of the things we learned from that program and working with Intern Pastor Matthew to offer another 12 week program this summer with Beyond Damascus. o We continue to offer Blood Drives through the American Red Cross. o We had two focused Sundays. First, “Donor Sabbath” which was requested by a congregation member. Second was “Power Sunday” which focused on cardiovascular health. It dramatically increased the number of people who started coming to have their blood pressures taken at worship.

o Judine participated in the Healing Service that was offered during Recovery Weekend. o Judine has provided monthly health education articles for The Table. o A flu clinic was held in October with the Minnesota Visiting Nurses Agency. o Judine has been active in the Metro Faith Community Organization and is serving on their Education Committee. A side benefit to being on the committee is that the quarterly continuing education trainings are free to committee members. • Yoga Devotion increased the number of their participants to the point that YD is giving back to the church 10% of their registration fees. • Enhance Fitness exercise classes for seniors continue to be well attended and are scheduled 4 times a week. • Faith Partners Ministry received very positive feedback when they hosted Recovery Weekend, which focused attention on various addictions and hope for recovery from a Christian standpoint. Joined by the Union Gospel Mission’s Changed Lives Choir, RLC experienced worship that was both enlightening and uplifting. Plans are in place to continue observance of Recovery Weekend and also to increase Faith Partners visibility among the youth of our congregation. • The Prayer Shawl knitters, the Prayer Team and the Quilters continue to provide care to our members as well as those beyond our walls. • We opened our doors to a six week series on Growing through Loss. At the end of this six weeks, Pastor Kris and Judine conducted a healing/prayer service for participants and Pastor Kris was the featured speaker. The Prayer Team was also there for those who wished to experience individual prayer and anointing. We recognize that physical and spiritual well-being is vitally connected in many different ways and God uses both our hands and our prayers to help nurture one another. We look forward to the next year of Serve with excitement and hope as we continue to Connect and Grow together in Christ’s love and light.

Design Team The Design Team continued to look for ways to Glorify God through Art and Design for an aesthetically and spiritually meaningful environment and support the mission of Roseville Lutheran Church. We work closely with Steve Henry, Facilities Campus Manager. We also work with other ministry committees throughout the year providing input and support when asked. Design Team members are Dorothy Borgstrom, Cindy Hanson, Sue Metzger, Carolyn Mohn, Cathy Nelson, and Dot Probst. A major focus this year has been managing and promoting the wall space connecting the Commons area with the Social Hall for displaying art from various exhibitors. Exhibitors have been: Judy Dodds, RLC member and accomplished Christian calligrapher with words of inspiration and hope; Tanzania Mission Traveling Photos; Matthew Nelson, a Luther Seminary Artist in Residence, “Social Justice” print series; The Banyan Community Youth

Art; Our own RLC Youth with “Prayer Through We are always open to and welcome suggesColor” exhibit; Kirsten Malcolm Berry, local artist tions and ideas. We usually meet the first Thursday and speaker of New Testament images in watercol- of the month at 9:30. or; and Donna Westerling, artist and member of RLC whose art tells stories and visually shares a message of hope and healing. We are currently planning to update the upper level lounge area. Plans are coming together to add 2 new podiums for guest speakers with visual and electronic connections; new wall coverings along window openings and fresh paint on the walls. We also have been asked to bring in more liturgical colors into the worship center. We’re in early planning talks with Anne Anderson, artist of the large fiber art hanging, about designing an altar cloth using liturgical colors. Kirsten Malcolm Berry

Mission & Outreach Ministry by Erik Wolhowe, Chair, Mission and Outreach Ministry Team In the book of Matthew, there are two portions from scripture that stand out to the Mission and Outreach Ministry Team: The first passage describes our MISSION and is from Matthew 25: 44-45. In it the disciples ask Jesus: “Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to you?” Jesus answered them, “Truly, I say to you, as you did it not to one of the least of these, you did it not to me.” The second passage describes our OUTREACH mission and is from Matthew 28:19. “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.” These two passages guide us and challenge us as a ministry team and as a church to help those in need and to reach out to those who have not yet received the message of God’s salvation. Roseville Lutheran Church continues to accept the challenges of these passages and continues to strive to meet them in a very active manner. RLC can be proud that we allocate towards Mission and Outreach efforts our first fruits, a 10% tithe from all general giving. Much has been accomplished this past year and the Mission and Outreach (M&O) Ministry Team has worked diligently to use these funds as efficiently and effectively as possible. Highlights from the past year include the support of two Seminary Interns at RLC, two Seminary students at local seminaries, and students from our companion congregation in Ng’ang’ange, Tanzania, who attend secondary schools; the support of Center for Christian Education in Slovakia where five RLC members went last year to teach; and support of our missionary in Peru, Pastor Dana Nelson, who is finishing her very successful term in June of this year. In addition, we continue our support of many ongoing programs like our camps at Lake Wapogasset and Voyageurs Lutheran Ministries, and our food/hunger ministries like

Mountain of Love, Loaves and Fishes, Meals on Wheels, Walk Day for Hunger, and our annual meal at the Hospitality Center for Chinese. For the upcoming program year, the M&O Team looks forward to continuing the relationship with many of the same programs and special events, but of special note are the following: starting a community meal, which is very exciting during our year of SERVE as it has the potential of being a substantial outreach to the community; and the prospect of a personal visit from Missionary Dana Nelson in August. Also, M&O looks forward to working with two new agencies this year, the Dwelling Place Shelter and MORE, Multicultural School for Empowerment. The Dwelling Place is a safe house for women and MORE is an agency helping immigrants from around the world get settled in Minnesota. Many people deserve thanks for their commitment to the M&O goals and for their efforts in achieving those goals. Among them are the M&O Team members for the past year: Dave and Karen Dudley, Dr. Dave Tetzlaff, Dot Probst, Mary Schultz, Jill Peterson, Lee Diedrick, and Pastor Dave Hanson. Others who have led special projects: Janet Risinger and Janice Walker, Hospitality Center for Chinese dinner; Beth Keiffer and Brenda Thompson, monthly Loaves and Fishes meal; and Kathy Miller, Walk Day for Hunger. Many, many others have contributed their time and talents whose names are not listed here but are still very deserving of RLC’s thanks. RLC members are encouraged to learn more about the programs supported by M&O by attending 10:10 hour presentations held throughout the year, particularly in January, 2014, and by reading the monthly articles in The Table. Volunteer opportunities are available at nearly all of the agencies supported by RLC and members are encouraged to contact either the M&O Ministry Team or the agencies directly for information. Volunteers who wish to join the M&O Ministry Team are also welcome.

The Ministry Plan Budget for 2013-2014 is based on the actual giving we have received in the prior budget year. This budget reflects reductions in all areas of ministry. Our hope is that these changes will help us to be fiscally responsible while still completing all the ministry that God has called us to. He cuts off every branch of mine that doesn’t produce fruit, and he prunes the branches that do bear fruit so they will produce even more. - John 15:2
