PTO Meeting 2/8/2017: Present: Tim Fletcher, Elyse Cloran, Gina Maciag, Meg Linden, Lisa Draper, Katie Broach ___________________________________________________________________ Principal’s Update/Vice Principal’s Update: Catholic Schools Week was a big success! The students and staff enjoyed many events including the teacher/student volleyball game. The Open House and tours went well. Next year, we would love to have more student involvement (maybe at least 20 students?) in the tours. Being able to ask current students questions about what they like about the school was the prospective families’ favorite part. Most of the prospective families were looking at kindergarten. The fifth grade attended a Vocations Mass at Guerin and enjoyed talks by Gachia Hofer’s sister and Tim Fletcher’s brother. This year, we added confessions during Adoration; there was a line and there was not enough time for all the students who wanted to receive the sacrament! Wonderful! The School Council’s first “Coffee with Council” session was a success. Eighteen parents signed in, but we suspect more were there. The panelists were incredibly helpful in giving tips on how to manage homework struggles. Post-event surveys were positive. Next year, we will consider adding a second session in the evening for parents who cannot attend during the day. Future topics could include internet safety. The teachers really enjoyed the Mexican themed teacher luncheon! The Faith Rally was a big hit. We had plenty of volunteers. Finally, about 20 to 30 families enjoyed the Ice Skating Party to close out Catholic Schools week. We discussed that Sunday evening was a tricky time this year with Sunday evening mass plus the Superbowl possibly causing the decreased attendance. Other updates: The sixth graders won their division in the Math Bowl!

We have a series of talks coming up by Dr. Ann Anzelone. She is a leader in research understanding how brain development ties into advances in the classroom. March 8 will be her first talk, sponsored by the School Council thanks to a grant. She was discovered by OLMC at the Indiana Non-Public Education Conference. Her teaching methods include hands-on activities making the audience engage in activities they can suggest for struggling students. The K-2 students just finished Dibels testing, focusing on reading readiness. Reports will come home soon. Istep is coming up in the March, so we are getting computers, other materials, and any special accommodations needed ready. The state is about to vote on a new testing system to replace Istep. ___________________________________________________________________ Treasurer’s Report : January income included $150 from used uniform sales, $1062 from Box tops (we budgeted $1500 for the year, so this is a great start!), $919 from Chick-Fil-A day. Not including the Feb. Chick-Fil-A day, we are already at $2600 for the year, and we only expected $2500! The total for the February day looks to be about $868; we get 20% of each OLMC transaction. We might like to invite Chick-Fil-A back to serve biscuits and coffee during carpool during Catholic Schools Week- they have contacted us for this before and provided the treats for free! Kroger update: We just received another check for $1747. We are getting close to our expected income of $5500. January expenses included $815 from the drumming performance, $51.97 for the St. Nicholas visit- candy canes plus his lunch. Budget for this was $50 so we are on target. We also had $1300 budgeted for the Adopt-a-Family program. This was reallocated to purchasing Chrome Books for the Community Generosity Day. We also spent $407 for the Raider Reporter (2nd quarter issue; it was in color so it was more expensive). We have been publishing some electronic issues, but feedback tells us printed versions are preferred. Other January expenses included $100 in Marsh and Panera gift cards for Catholic Schools Week tours, and $54.69 for note cards for teacher feast days.

Wash accounts included $57 for wrapping supplies for the St. Nicholas shop. We also had $453 of Spirit Wear Sales. Final charges for the Mothers’ Mass totaled $166. Note is made that some checks for Christmas Teacher Contributions came in after the deadline. Those will be added on to the end-of-year gifts. Classroom funds: Second grade used $80 to have Santa come to the Polar Express. The seventh and eighth grades used funds for a Christmas pizza party. Note: Leah Payne will be sending out an email clarifying that room parents have a budget of $4 per student. They can ask for donations of items from parents for classroom parties, but they may not ask for money. ___________________________________________________________________ Old/New Business: The used book and toy drive was a success. A special Thank You to Mrs. Carter for organizing this! We have had many great events recently, including all the Catholic Schools Week events, Chick-Fil-A day, and the Used Book and Toy Drive (thanks, Mrs. Carter!). Movie night for 3rd and 4th grade is coming up on 2/10/17. So far, 65 students have registered! Scrip continues to be an amazing source of income for the school. With the Washington DC incentive, 67% (238 out of 351) families are participating in Scrip sales now. This is a huge increase! The Community Generosity Project was a huge success. We will be getting a formal update soon on how it all went! We may consider redirecting funds raised next year from the purchase of material goods to an experience like a combined field trip to help unify the schools. Lenten food basket update: Janine Boivin, Stephani Hedrick, and Jayne Slaton are working on this. The process will mirror the previous years. Third grade Easter basket update: Last year, there was not enough parent participation to make it a success. This year, the teachers are considering suggesting eliminating it altogether or doing something on a smaller scale, like selling Easter eggs with candy inside at lunch time. Alternatively, the third grade

could just participate in the Lenten Easter Baskets instead. Gina Maciag will work on the details. Faith Rally teacher luncheon update: This year, the teachers had two luncheons. One was planned by a parent on Faith Rally Day. It was so popular that we may need to add this into the formal planning and budget for next year. PTO board nomination process: Forms will go home next week requesting nominations for the PTO from parents. Forms are due back by March 8. PTO members will also be asked for recommendations. If a recommended person is interested, they will fill out a questionnaire. The nomination committee (Sr. Maria Benedicta, Mr. Fletcher, Elyse Cloran, and Gina Maciag) will narrow down, vote, and by April 27, they would like to announce the new Board Members. Bylaw update: We are currently conducting a review of the Bylaws. Volunteer Coordinator position discussion: A meeting will occur to discuss whether or not this needs to be a 1) separate position apart from the President’s and Secretary’s roles, and 2) a PTO board position or not. Calendar updates: Jennifer Seaman and the Diocesan Principals are working on next school year’s calendar. A date and location has been set for the Mothers’ Mass. St. Nicholas Shop updates: Celtic Cross has confirmed they will run our St. Nicholas Shop next year. It is not a moneymaker for the school, but it certainly promotes Catholicism. Perhaps we will ask them to fund the gift wrapping expenses next year. ___________________________________________________________________ The next PTO meeting will be Friday, March 3, 2017, at 9 am in the St. John Bosco Room. Remainder of the year’s meetings are as follows: March 30: 9-10am Jerome Library April 27: 9-10am Faculty Lounge May 25: 9-10am John Bosco (Transition meeting to welcome the new board members)
