FASTING, ABSTINENCE & PENANCE As the season of Lent is a short me away, it is helpful to recall the discipline of the Church with regards to fast, abs nence, and other forms of penance. 1. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fast and abs nence. The law of fas ng allows one full meal and two smaller ones that do not together equal one full meal. The law of abs nence prohibits the ea ng of meat. 2. The Fridays of Lent are days of abs nence for Catholics in the United States. 3. The obliga on of abs nence begins at age 14. The law of fas ng obliges all between the ages of 18-59. 4. Pastors and parents are to see to it that minors, though not bound by the law of fast and abs nence, are educated in the authen c sense of penance and encouraged to do acts of penance suitable to their age. 5. All members of the Chris an faithful are encouraged to do acts of penance and charity during the Lenten season beyond what is prescribed by the law.
