Uncharted Lesson 4 April 28/29 2

Uncharted Series at a Glance for Elevate (continued) Lesson 1: Evangelism Jesus gave his followers a mission: to tell others the story of what he did. Jesus died and came back to life to show his love for every person on earth, and he wants everyone to know about it. When we tell someone about Jesus, we’re helping fulfill that amazing mission, and giving them the chance to follow God! Like Peter, we can tell others about Jesus, simply by sharing the story of how he changed our lives! Our stories can show others who Jesus is. Lesson 2: Giving When we think of giving, we usually think of money. Even if we have no money, however, we still have a lot to give. Peter and John didn’t have a cent to give when a man who couldn’t walk asked them for money, but they ended up giving him something much more valuable. Just like Peter, you have something incredible to give, something that can have a huge impact on someone else. Lesson 3: Prayer Do our prayers make a difference? The people in the first church weren’t sure all the time either. In fact, when God miraculously answered one of their prayers, they didn’t believe it at first! Prayer helped Peter out of a dangerous place, and still makes a difference today, because every one of your prayers matters to God. Lesson 4: Community Whether you’ve been following Jesus for years or just started this week, God has a huge adventure in store for you. Like any journey, the people you follow make a big difference. After Saul met Jesus in an incredible way, the first place God sent him was to a mentor, someone who could help him follow God. The people we choose to guide us can lead us further from God or closer to him. Like Saul, we need to choose our community well. Lesson 5: Service and Hospitality Lydia followed Jesus, but she wasn’t a pastor, a worship leader, or a teacher. She was a businesswoman who used her gifts and abilities to serve others and do great things for God in a way you may not expect. This week we’ll find out how her hospitality made a difference then, and how welcoming others can have a huge impact today. Lesson 6: Knowing God John Mark (known just as Mark) is only mentioned a couple times in the Bible, but his story is a big part of it. His first trip with Paul was a disaster, so much so that Paul refused to accept Mark's help later on. Mark would go on, however, to be one of the first people to write down the full story of Jesus, and have a great relationship with Paul. Join us this week to find out how knowing God changed Mark's life, and can still change ours today! Uncharted Lesson 4 April 28/29 3

Welcome to Elevate! As you all come up to the front here, tell me your best joke. Do This: Listen to kids’ jokes, but don’t feel the need to repeat them for everyone. Take a minute to just interact with kids individually as they come up to the front. (Auto advance) Elevate Slide and Underscore

Welcome

1:00

It is so awesome to be here with all of you. My name is ___________, and it’s hard to say what I’m most excited for. We’ve got music, stories, and more fun stuff coming up, but there’s something I want to make sure you know. Today is all about being part of a team. Just by being here, you’re already part of a great team. The flag with your grade written on it is your team’s flag. That’s your color. Can I get a shout from the teal team? The black team? The orange team? The silver team? And the white team? Great job. Like I said, your teams are extra important today, so get to know them as much as you can.

Question of the Day

2:00

Speaking of which, there’s a chance for you to get to know some of your team members right now. It’s our question of the day! Question of the Day Video

(Auto Advance) QOTD Slide: What’s your favorite part of a party?

Uncharted Lesson 4 April 28/29 5

What’s your favorite part of a party? It could be a Christmas party, a birthday party, or just a random party for fun, but think of what your favorite thing to do would be, and share that with someone on your team! Make sure you find out their answer, too. Do This: Emcee as the kids are sharing their answers. Encourage them to share with the people around them, and encourage any kid whose story you hear. Know This: Allow kids time to interact with one another. Feel free to ask a few of them what their answer is, but you don’t have to have them share with the whole group.

Those all sounded like super fun ideas. One thing I thought about, though, is that every party needs people. It would be hard to throw a fun party all by yourself. We need people to make parties fun! We’ll find out lots more about being part of a team today, but now it’s time to try some real teamwork with our group activity!

Group Activity

Game Title Slide: “Feather Float”

This game is called “Feather Float.” Each of your group leaders has a feather. Your job, as a team, will be to pass the feather all the way down the line, using only your breath. You can’t touch it, and you can’t leave your place in line. You have to work as a team to get the feather all the way down the line. If it hits the ground or flies away, your leader will have to bring it back. Your leader will time you to see how quickly you can complete this challenge! Once you find your groups, get into a line, and your group leader will get you started. Head to your group flags, you’ll have five minutes to see who can set the record for the fastest time! Once you get into your lines, I’ll start the countdown. Ready, set, go! 5:00 Countdown and Fun Game Music! Know This: Connect with the group leaders beforehand. This game is most fun if groups feel challenged to do the activity several times. They can say things like “I bet we can do this in under one minute, let’s try!” Or “Let’s see if we can beat our time!”

Uncharted Lesson 4 April 28/29 6

Do This: If possible before the hour begins, designate a taped line on the floor for each group. This will help them stay in their places, and not chase after the feather after it has passed them. Worship Slide and clear audio

Alright, time is up! You can sit down up front here. Group leaders, what were your fastest times? Awesome job, everyone. It can be tough to work as a team, but it’s super important.

Worship

5:00

God made us to work together. He put us into families, gave us the chance to have friends, and most of all, God wants you to have a relationship with him. His love for us is so amazing, and that’s what this song is about! Let’s stand and sing together. Song 1: Higher than the Sky

(Auto advance) Worship Slide

It is super fun to worship God with you. You can sit down, but we’re going to worship God in another way. You see, worship means showing God that we love him. We do that by singing and dancing, but we also do that when we follow God’s commands, tell others about him, and spend time with him. We can spend some time with him right now, by praying. Let’s close our eyes to help us focus on God, and I’ll talk to him for us right now. God, thank you for the way you made us. Thank you for giving us friends and family, and for wanting to be close to us. Help us to learn more about you today. Amen.

Next, it’s time to dive in to the Light Force’s latest adventure! Let’s find out what’s happening at Light Force headquarters. Uncharted Lesson 4 April 28/29 7

Light Force: Part 1 (4:00) (Auto advance) Series Title Slide: Uncharted

That could be a tough problem to solve on your own. I wonder what they are going to do?

Lesson Intro

1:00

Well, the Light Force has a big question to answer, but we do, too. A few minutes ago, I said that God made us to be with other people. That’s true, but it’s not always easy. I don’t get along with everyone. In fact, sometimes it’s extra hard to get along with people you know well, like your brothers or sisters, your parents, and even your friends. These are people that change our lives every day. The things they say to you and the stuff they ask you to do makes a difference. So, your big question to answer is, Who is leading your life? Think about that with your groups, and I’ll see you after group time.

Group Time

15:00

(Optional) 15:00 Group Time Countdown Do This: Make sure each kid finds their group. Help group leaders if there is a need. Encourage kids as they work to answer the question. Know This: This is a time for kids to search for answers in the Bible, and see how they can use the Bible to investigate and better understand life. This time is designed for kids to interact and deepen their understanding. They won’t get all the answers, but allow them to question and discover as much as possible. Be ready to support group leaders in any way needed. Do This: Give the groups a warning about one minute before this time is up. When this time ends, transition into the memory verse challenge. (Auto-Advance) Memory Verse Slide: Acts 1:8 “You will be my witnesses from one end of the earth to the other.”

Memory Verse

2:00

If you’ve been here over the past few weeks, you’ve heard this verse once or twice. It’s a mission that Jesus gave to his followers, just before he went to live with God in heaven. I’ll read it for us. Do This: Read the verse from the screen.

The cool thing about this is he didn’t give it to just one person. He says “you will be my witnesses!” There’s more than one, in fact there’s more than one million! Every person that knows, loves, and trusts Jesus with their life is a part of this awesome mission. That’s good, because it’s going to take all of us to make it happen! Let’s read this verse together. Do This: Read the verse together.

This time, I’ll say a team’s color, and every person in that team has to say the verse at the same time. I might say your team, even while a team is going, so pay close attention! Do This: Call on teams to say the verse. Make sure each team gets to say it once, but feel free to start teams while others are halfway through.

Nice work. It’s cool that Jesus gave a mission for all of us to do together.

Media: Part 2

8:00

Thinking of teams reminds me of the Light Force’s problem. I wonder what’s going on at their headquarters? Let’s find out!

Uncharted Lesson 4 April 28/29 9

Light Force: Part 2 (8:00) (Auto advance) Series Title Slide: Uncharted

Choosing someone you trust to lead you is a great thing to do. Choosing other people to guide you is so important, it’s the first thing Paul did after deciding to follow Jesus!

Application

5:00

The people that lead us through our lives are super important, just like Saul’s story showed us. After he started following Jesus, Saul spent a lot of time with the people who knew Jesus the best, his disciples. He made friends that would stand up for him, like Barnabas, and learned from teachers that he could trust, like Peter. Saul was choosing people to be in his community. A community is a group of people that you see often and share things with. Community: A group of people that you see often and share things with.

Your family is in your community, and it’s important to be a good family member, but you don’t get to choose your family. What Saul was doing was choosing people that would help him get to know God better. He was choosing people who would lead him to make right choices. You can do the same thing he did. All around you are people who know and love God. Every time you come here and are in your group, you are part of a great community. When you ask your group leader questions, they can help you learn more about God. They are a great person to have as part of your community. When you are a part of a community that loves God, something awesome happens. See this popsicle stick? Do This: Show kids one popsicle stick. Place it between two tables.

This popsicle stick on it’s own can’t support much weight. In fact, if I put this weight on here, it’ll snap! Do This: Place the weight on the popsicle stick, resting the middle of the weight on the middle of the stick. The stick will break. Uncharted Lesson 4 April 28/29 10

Now, let’s try with two popsicle sticks. Do you think they’ll hold up this weight? Maybe. Let’s find out! Do This: Place two popsicle sticks on top of one another across the gap between the tables. Place the weight on top of them. The sticks should hold. If not, that’s ok, the point of the lesson remains the same. You could simply say “They still weren’t quite strong enough to hold the weight. If we got three, four, or five sticks, they’d be able to hold more and more weight! That’s why having other people around us is so important.” Know This: You should throw out all the popsicle sticks used after each lesson whether they break or not, so the ones used in the next lesson are not weakened by being used before.

Two sticks together can hold up way more than either one could alone. That’s kind of how people work, too. We can do some things on our own, but we can do so much more when we help and support each other. When we get into trouble, or are having tough times, it’s important to have people in our community who can help us. That’s why what you are doing right now is so important. You’re at church! This whole place is a community of people who know and love God, and it’s one of the best places to find someone to guide you and help you. This is something that can help you think about and choose who’s in your community. This tool is for you, but also for your whole family to think about who you want to be guiding your life. Who can you trust to give good advice? Who can answer your questions about God? Who will always be there to encourage you? If you don’t have people like that in your life, this tool can help you find them! Be sure to grab one on your way out, and go through it with your family this week.

Worship

4:00

One awesome thing about being in a community that loves God is worshipping together. Something awesome happens when we all praise God. Let’s stand and do that now with this song! Song 2: Shout it from the Mountains (Auto advance) Series Title Slide: Uncharted

Wrap-Up

Uncharted Lesson 4 April 28/29 11

We’re almost done, but I want to remind you, get one of these community building tools when you leave today! Do This: Show kids the community handout.

This is an awesome way to get your family thinking about the people that are guiding your lives. Also, I hope you’ll come back next week, because I’m really glad you’re a part of our community here. Let’s finish up today by praying. To help us stay focused on God, let’s close our eyes and bow our heads while we talk to him. God, you are so great. Help us to choose people to guide us, and choose them well. Thanks for giving us communities that can help us when things get tough. In Jesus’ name, amen. I’ve had a lot of fun hanging out with you all today, I hope to see you next week! Elevate Slide
