SENT: Week 5 – The Birth of the Church Open in Prayer W elcom e/Introductions/Cast Vision Rem ind the Grow Group of the ground rules Share background for the story [Provide context by sharing what comes before the story.]

In this passage, we see a harvest of those who responded to the Gospel delivered by Peter. They were immediately baptized and added to the church. Fast forwarding from this scene, the early church not only devoted themselves to the apostles teaching, but they also devoted themselves to one another. The church began to grow in the wisdom and knowledge of Christ so much that it shaped how they viewed one another. As a result of their devotion, the Lord continued to add to the church those who are being saved. Tell the story – this week’s passage is Acts 2:37-47 [Have someone tell the story.] Rebuild the story [Group members tell the story together based on what they remember] Read the story out loud [Read the scripture passage to see if anything was added or omitted] Discuss these questions:

1. What do we learn about God from this passage? [God brings conviction to our hearts, God calls us to repent, forgiveness is only found through Jesus, the Lord calls us to intimacy with Himself, God uses people to do incredible things, God calls us to remain diligent in the sharing of our faith, etc.]

2. What do we learn about Man/Us from this passage? (I am selfish and do not want to sacrifice for the needs of others, I try to do God’s part, repentance is difficult for us, etc.]

3. What is God saying to you specifically through this passage as it pertains to your life, marriage, family, and work? 4. What is God leading you to do? Other Q uestions specific to this passage:

1. Which of the things the disciples did after Pentecost (verses 42-46) is your Grow Group doing? What changes need to be made? 2. When was the last time you were “pierced to the heart” by God’s Word? What did you do in response to it? Assign next week’s passage – Acts 3:1-11 [Ask someone to tell the story next week.] Close in Prayer

Sent: Week 5 – Leadership Coaching The purpose of this page is to help you sharpen your skills as a Grow Group Leader. Each week we will include concepts, challenges, and resources designed to assist you as you lead and shepherd your grow group and grow as a disciple yourself.

Leading [learn to facilitate your group more effectively] Remember that one of the primary goals for biblical storytelling is to equip others to re-tell the story outside the group. Stories from God’s Word help us easily communicate God’s truth to our children, friends, co-workers and neighbors. Ask the group if anyone retold last week’s story during the week. Challenge the group to re-tell the story to someone outside of group this coming week. Ask them to be mindful of situations throughout the week where the story was applied and made real in their lives.

Shepherding [know the sheep, feed the sheep, lead the sheep, protect the sheep] A spiritual parent is someone who is intentional about living out the mission of raising up disciples who can make disciples. Spiritual parents reproduce disciples, are able to feed themselves and others from God’s Word, and they value the church team in accomplishing the mission. You may see this in their actions and hear it in their conversation. To shepherd someone who is a spiritual parent, you will begin by explaining the discipleship process (teach them the discipleship wheel). As they begin discipling others, you will coach them by helping them with things such as planning meetings and assessing where people are in their spiritual growth. Be certain to maintain relationships with those you release to disciple on their own to provide encouragement and accountability.

Abiding [grow as a disciple yourself] In the upcoming weeks, we will learn of a righteous man namesd Barnabas. Later in Acts, Barnabas will bring Saul (the apostle Paul) to the other apostles in Jerusalem. Barnabas confirms that Saul has experienced Christ and has been saved and is boldly preaching the gospel. Barnabas takes Saul on several missionary journeys and serves as his mentor and colaborer. Who is your Barnabas? Who is teaching you, serving with you and showing you the ropes? The apostle Paul calls Timothy his “true son in the faith.” In Romans 16, Paul lists the names of many people who have learned from him. If you were writing to those you had discipled, how many names would be on your list? Who are you currently sharing your life with and pouring into? Spend some time reading the books of 1 and 2 Timothy. Notice that Paul continues to teach and encourage Timothy even after he has been released to do ministry on his own. Notice how Paul refers to Timothy with fatherly concern and affection. Their close relationship is a blessing to both Paul and Timothy.
