Adventure Camps Emergency Action Plans In the event of an emergency your number one role is to keep all campers and yourself safe. 1. Remove campers from an unsafe area or persons. Always stay calm; the children will react just as you do. Move them to another area to play a game. You can also say that you dropped or hid something and you need everyone’s help to find it! 2. TAKE ATTENDACE- do NOT just head count. 3. Call 9-1-1 if EMS or Police is needed 4. Call a director 5. If on site, our meet-up spot will always be the camp room, from there you may be sent to the activity room, outside patios, or training building. Building Fire: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.

Know evacuation procedure, teach campers during orientation Account for ALL campers and staff Call fire rescue 9-1-1 (camp 2000 Westlake Ave North, pool 2040 Westlake Ave North) Remove all participants from the area and start new activity Follow instructions from SNS management To not talk to members of the press/media

Earthquake 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.

Know evacuation procedure, teach campers during orientation Account and instruct campers on the following steps Drop to the ground Cover your head while moving to coverage under table Hold on to the legs of the desk/table It is very common to have secondary tremors that often cause loose fixtures to fall. If your scene is safe (no smell of gas or fire) stay in your location until instructed. Sing a song to entertain campers and for rescuers to hear. 7. Report to the director if possible.

Poor Weather: In the event of strong winds, heavy rain, or thunder and lighting, follow EAP steps listed above. Move to a safe location and start another activity. Contact director to inform of alternative plans. Paddle Sports lifeguards have final call on poor weather at MOHAI.

Pool deck emergency: If a lifeguard activates an EAP, follow above steps and calmly relocate your group into the camp room. Depending on location of emergency you may use the staff room doors, or the blue emergency exit door. After checking in with the director you may be assigned to assist in the EAP. Camper does not feel well: Please take into consideration hydration, sun exposure, time in water, and possible homesickness. If rest and little sips of water do not help your camper please refer them to the Health Center Supervisor. Vomit: If you hear coughing, gagging, or that look. Remove from pool immediately! We MUCH rather have vomit on pool deck than in our pool. Remove all other campers from the area if on land. Allow child to continue to vomit if necessary, do not leave child alone. Instruct an adult to get a BBP kit located in camp room first aid kit or staff room kit. Help child change out of clothes and rinse off if needed. Contact Health Center Supervisor.

Soiled Clothing: Prevent by having many and predictable bathroom breaks!! Put on gloves. Help camper change into clean clothes, double-bag soiled clothes in small garbage bag. Contact director or Health Center Supervisor. Injured Camper: Always provide the care that is within your certification training (First Aid) or have another certified staff member assess/care for the camper. If a camper is injured at camp the Health Center Supervisor must be informed. All care provided to child must be logged in the first aid book. If the injury in sever, an incident report must be filled out.

Ask if they have checked in with the director for camps or the front desk for all other inquires. Help people that are misplaced. 3. Some families do come to watch lessons and join us for the Friday Picnic. All camp family visitors will be wearing a SNS bracelet. Off Site: 1. Talk with your group ahead of time about staying together, the buddy system and their boundaries. 2. Try to keep your campers away from the masses and other large camp groups. 3. If people are curious, briefly explain the nature of the program and where to find more information, then get back to the group. 4. Keep an eye out for questionable characters 5. Do not allow campers to provoke the public in any way. 6. Relocate your group if needed and keep them engaged in our camp activities. 7. Call 9-1-1 and a director if having continued issues or if people are being uncooperative.

Verbal Cues and Code Words “It’s time for an all camp game/song”: Enthusiastically gather all campers away from current area and distract them with a large game and song. This will allow the directors to handle and judge a potential situation. Please wait for an OK to stop the game/songs. “Polar Bears are swimming”: This will activate our EAP. Calmly gather your children in a safe location to take attendance and play a sit down, calming activity. Report to a director with your location, group name and that all your campers accounted for. An example walkie or text would be: “Polar Bears: MOHAI splash, Seal group, all here.” A director will respond with a “Standby” and then “all clear.”  Call the Health Center Supervisor when you need medical support, they will come to you when appropriate.  Call you director when you need behavioral management support, there has been a change in you programming (late, canceled activity) or if there is an emergency.  Camp Directors will contact families. Camp staff may assist when instructed.  Scott Gordon or Kerrie Gordon are the only employees approved to communicate with media.
