HEALTH

The best gift any grandparent can give their grandchild is...good health Brandpoint

For grandparents, giving is quite possibly the best part of the holiday season. When you gather with your kids and grandkids this holiday season it’s wonderful to share your homemade cookies and heartfelt gifts, but two things no one in your family should ever give to a loved one are influenza (flu) or whooping cough. Most people have heard of the flu and understand how contagious it may be. However, many people might not know how serious it can be, particularly for young children and older adults who are at high risk for severe complications. In fact, each year the flu causes an average of

200,000 hospitalizations, and thousands of deaths. Pertussis, which is also known as whooping cough, may not be as well-known as the flu; however, it is also a serious and highly contagious disease that affects the respiratory tract. It can cause severe coughing fits that can last up to 10 weeks or more, and it spreads from person to person much like the cold and flu viruses - through coughing and sneezing. People of all ages can get whooping cough, but the disease is especially dangerous for infants and young children to whom it can cause severe and even life-threatening complications. Sadly, about half of children under 1 year old who

get whooping cough end up in the hospital and approximately 1 out of 100 infants hospitalized for whooping cough will die. Because the disease may be milder in adolescents and adults, many people may not realize they actually have whooping cough, and accidentally spread it to others. In fact, babies are most likely to catch whooping cough from a family member. One recent study of infants with whooping cough showed that approximately 85 percent of babies got the disease from a member of their immediate or extended family, when a source could be identified. during the holiday season, but thanks to the extra travel and large family get-togethers, someone always seems to fall ill. As a grandparent, you may take the normal precautions, such as frequently washing your hands and coughing and sneezing into a tissue, but these are not enough to stop the spread of the flu and whooping cough. Fortunately, there is something you can do to help prevent these diseases. Talk to your healthcare provider about what vaccines you need to help keep yourself and your family members healthy.

Getting the word out

Despite the seriousness of both flu and whooping cough, the number of adults who get vaccinated against these diseases remains alarmingly low. While the CDC recommends everyone,

especially those around babies get vaccinated against whooping cough, only 14 percent of adults 19 years and older, and 26 percent of adults living with an infant have had the recommended Tdap vaccination, and only 43.6 percent of adults were vaccinated against the flu last season. “Grandparents are such an important part of their g randchildren’s lives,” says Amy Pisani, Executive Director of the nonprofit organization Every Child By Two. “That’s why it’s important that they speak to their healthcare providers about getting vaccinated against the flu and whooping cough. We want every grandparent to be able to play a happy, healthy, helpful role in their grandchildren’s development, for many years to come.”

To help raise awareness about the importance of timely vaccination for people of all ages, Every Child By Two is launching the Vaccinate Your Family program. The program includes a new website for the public - VaccinateYourFamily.org - and a number of new resources including the “Grandparents Toolkit.” The toolkit includes a number of materials including tips on how to soothe a fussy baby, ideas for the perfect baby shower, a guide to discussing whooping cough with your healthcare provider, and much more. To learn more about inf luenza and whooping cough, and how you can help keep yourself and your family safe through vaccination, visit the Vaccinate Your Family web site and download the free toolkit.

PHILANTHROPY

Is fear making it difficult for you to give? Brandpoint

What do you do to give back? Do you volunteer your time, your skills or your knowledge? Do you pride yourself on being a generous person? Generosity has always been seen as a positive virtue, and new research from Thrivent Financial shows Americans are placing more emphasis on being generous than ever before. Sixty-one percent of Americans said they would rather be called generous than financially successful, according to the 2015 Money Mindset Report, and a third said they think the purpose of the money they make is to give back, either during their lifetime or afterward. That’s positive news, but the same research shows that while many Americans want to be generous, they aren’t prepar-

ing financially for the future. They’re lacking in long-term financial strategies, advice and tools, and this is generally true regardless of how much money a person makes. “The data from our 2015 Money Mindset Report shows that a majority of people want to be generous, but may not be making other decisions that help them down the path of being wise with money,” says Brad Hewitt, CEO of Thrivent Financial. “As people improve their money habits - by spending less than they make, being wise with debt, having short- and long-term plans, protecting against potential setbacks, and giving back we find they’re able to experience more freedom to fulfill their goals.” Many Americans are unsure of their financial stability

Only 27 percent of the 1,001 American adults surveyed said they felt very confident they were making the right decisions with their money. Meanwhile, 16 percent said they struggle to keep up with dayto-day expenses, and 32 percent said they were just making ends meet. Only 10 percent felt they had more money than they needed. The survey also showed many Americans struggle with their finances in other ways. Thirty-two percent don’t have an emergency fund, 25 percent don’t have a long-term financial strategy and 21 percent don’t have a short-term strategy. More than three quarters do not work with a financial advisor, and more than half don’t have life insurance, a retirement fund or disability income insurance.

FINANCIAL PLANNING

Financial resolutions: Are you saving for retirement? Brandpoint

The start of a new year is a great time to look forward with a fresh outlook, as well as to set goals. As you think about what you want to accomplish next year, consider your financial savings habits. How much are you putting away for the future? Could you begin to save for retirement, or increase how much you’re saving? What financial actions have you put off because of lack of time? Setting financial savings goals can be overwhelming, which may be why 31 percent of Americans report having no retirement savings or pension, according to a recent Federal Reserve Report on the Economic Well-Being of U.S. Households. Putting together a plan can make saving for the future much more manageable. Whether you haven’t started saving or simply want to challenge yourself to save more, use the following tips to make 2016 the year you focus on preparing for retirement. • If you aren’t already saving, start now. You’re never too young - or too old - to begin saving for retirement. Whether you’ve just completed high school and are working your first job, or your

career is nearly complete and retirement is in sight, determine how much you can save and which savings vehicle is right for you. If your employer offers a company-sponsored retirement plan, take advantage of the opportunity to save automatically via payroll deduction. If that’s not possible, consider opening a myRA account, the U.S. Treasury’s new retirement savings program for individuals who don’t have access to retirement savings plans at work. • Seek opportunities to save more. If you’re already saving, that’s a great start, but you can always save more! If you earn an annual bonus, a salary increase, or even a tax refund, consider depositing it in a retirement savings account. You can

BRANDPOINT

The start of a new year is a great time to look forward with a fresh outlook, as well as to set goals. contribute up to $5,500 each year to a myRA, Roth IRA, or Traditional IRA account (or up to $6,500 if you’re age 50 or older). Keep in mind that

the more you save early on, the more time that principal amount has to grow interest. For example, if you have a balance of $3,000 in

a savings account that earns three percent interest, adding a lump sum of $1,000 at the beginning of the year will earn an extra $30 in interest over the next 12 months, and that amount will compound even more as the years go by. Note that in 2016, you can elect to deposit all or some of your tax refund in a myRA account. • Make a plan and follow it. Resolve to make a financial savings plan this year and review your progress regularly. As a starting point for your plan, consider meeting with a financial planner, or take advantage of free planning resources at mymoney.gov or other reputable personal finance websites. You can use the retirement savings calculator on myRA.gov to estimate

how much your savings may grow over the course of five, 10, or 15 years or more based on the amount you contribute each month. By setting up regular, automatic savings from your bank account or paycheck into a myRA account, this is a New Year’s resolution you can make now and watch your savings grow throughout the year. There are many options for saving for retirement and managing your finances. As you make your savings resolutions for 2016, do some research and determine which type of account or plan works best for you. With the New Year upon us, now is a great time to start or renew your savings habit. Visit myRA.gov for more information on how to get started.

PROPERTY MANAGEMENT

Sensible steps to keep animals out of your environment Brandpoint

Depending on where you live and what weather forecasting service you listen to, the upcoming winter may be brutal. Weather predictions can be as variable as the weather itself, but one thing is for sure — temperatures don’t need to drop drastically to inspire unwelcome animals to encroach on your personal space. Deer can devastate your landscape, rodents can infiltrate your backyard and before you know it you have damage to your yard and home. Wildlife can even put your family’s health at risk; deer are known to harbor disease-carrying ticks and rodent infestations have been associated with respiratory ailments. It pays to take sensible steps to keep unwanted animals away from your home this winter, no matter what the temperature.

Diverting deer

A single deer can consume 1.5 tons of vegetation a year. The number of whitetail deer has tripled in certain states in the past decade, and as other food sources become scarce in fall and winter, hungry deer turn to suburban landscapes for food. Foraging deer can cripple gardens, shrubs and trees, sometimes rendering them unable to weather winter, leaving you with a dead, lifeless landscape in springtime. Deer also carry the ticks that cause Lyme disease. When winter comes, you don’t want to be spending time in the cold maintaining fences (which often aren’t tall enough to keep deer out), sound and sight deterrent devices (which deer get used to) or even utilizing a chemical based repellent (which can be harmful to humans, pets, wildlife and plants). Instead, opt for a proven effective, all-natural topical spray repellent like Bobbex Deer Repellent. Available as a readyto-use spray or concentrate,

scape than frost. Fencing and other types of deterrents like plastic owls often aren’t effective in scaring herbivores away. Bobbex-R Animal Repellent is an all-natural, topical spray that repels small herbivores but is harmless to all wildlife, people, pets and contains no petro chemicals. Rain, snow, hosing and irrigation won’t wash the product off, and you can even use it as a bulb-dip to prevent below-ground foraging. It can also be sprayed at the mouth of burrows and holes to prevent animal re-entry. Bobbex-R will also help protect plantings from reduced moisture content during periods of water reduced weather conditions. In winter, cold weather, blustery winds and frozen soil reduce plants’ ability to absorb much needed moisture to maintain vitality. BobbexR provides retention of moisture in plantings through periods of frigid weather, and reduces damage from early fall frost.

Mice, rats and even raccoons can take up residence inside homes when the weather turns cold. A single rodent in a home can quickly turn into an infestation, damaging walls, belongings and exposing your family to allergens and disease. Removing an infestation can be costly and time-consuming, so it makes sense to be pro-active and try to prevent pests from coming inside in the first place. Before the weather cools, take a look around your home to find any potential entry points - remember, mice may be able to get in through an opening as small as ¼ inch — and plug them. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends looking around doors and windows, pipes throughout the home, fireplaces, attics and crawl spaces, vents and drains. You can do the job yourself or hire a professional to help pestproof your home. While you may have to put up with a long, cold, hard winter you certainly don’t have to tolerate unwanted fourlegged foes in your home or yard once the weather cools and winter arrives. A combination of the right deterrents and prudent preparations can ensure your environment remains as pest-free as possible this year.

SPORTS INJURIES

Football players face more than just concussion worries Brandpoint

There’s been a lot of attention recently on the effects of sports-related brain injuries. However, PseudoBulbar Affect (PBA), a neurologic condition that causes uncontrollable, sudden outbursts of crying and/or laughing in people with brain injuries or certain neurologic conditions, is absent from the dialogue. An estimated 7 million Americans suffer from PBA, but awareness is low and many people don’t know they have it. A recent survey from the Gridiron Greats Assistance Fund assessed the prevalence and impact of PBA symptoms in former professional football players. Ninety-nine percent of all players had experienced head trauma or injury during

their football career. And more concerning is that a third of these players admit to experiencing symptoms consistent with PBA; and most were unaware that PBA symptoms may result from head injury. PBA is not limited to sports-related brain injury; it can also occur in people with brain injuries from other causes like car accidents or falls, or certain other neurologic conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease or other dementias, stroke, traumatic brain injury (TBI) or multiple sclerosis. PBA episodes may occur several times a day and last from seconds to minutes, can be exaggerated or don’t usually match what a person is feeling on the inside, and can occur spontaneously, often with no clear trigger.

However, few were aware of PBA-like symptoms. • Among former players surveyed with PBA-like symptoms, the greatest impact of these symptoms appears to be on spending time with family, maintaining a marriage, working and being able to participate in social activities. Is your heating system ready to brave the long, harsh winter? As cold temperatures take hold all over the country, it’s important for homeowners to safeguard their homes from heating system breakdowns. “It’s fairly simple to ensure your home is ready for the freezing months ahead,” says Mike Clear, vice president of operations for home warranty company American Home Shield, which has

responded to more than two million service requests for heating system issues over the past five years. “Paying attention to little things now can help you avoid problems down the road, like unexpected repair or replacement expenses or disruption to your family’s routine.” Clear offers tips to help you maintain your heating system and keep your home warm this winter: 1. Schedule a maintenance check-up. Each year, have your

4. Seal the leaks. Keep warm air in and cold air out by making sure your doors and windows are properly caulked or have necessary weather stripping. Not only will this help you stay warm and comfortable, but it will reduce the stress on your heating system. 5. Consider a home warranty. A home warranty, like those offered by American Home Shield, can help you control costs when covered components of your heating system or other covered items break down. Plus, with their network of professional contractors, you avoid the hassle of having to search yourself for a qualified technician to make repairs. 6. Check your hot water heater. Inspect your hot water heater tank for leaks or corrosion, and flush it per the manufacturer’s instructions to eliminate sediment buildup. Test the pressure relief valve once a year to make sure it is working properly. Follow these tips and you’ll stay warm and cozy this winter instead of getting stuck in a heating system rut.

This year, resolve to make the most of your employee benefits Brandpoint

Many Americans start the New Year by resolving to improve their lives by exercising more, losing weight or making other changes. Based on research findings, one in five should resolve to put their financial house in order. Research by Ma ssMut u a l s how s t h a t many Americans struggle with their personal f i n a nc e s , e s p e c i a l l y when it comes to making the most of their employee benefits: • 22 percent of Americans admit they don’t understand their personal finances; • 22 percent don’t know which employee benefits such as healthcare coverage, life or d i sa bi l it y i n su r a nc e or retirement savings should be a priority; • 42 percent say they

don’t know if they are on track to retire comfortably; and • 64 percent don’t know the details of their life insurance. “Many people muddle through personal financial decisions and simply hope for the best,” said Elaine Sarsynski, executive vice president, MassMutual Retirement Services and Worksite Insurance. “Unfortunately, all too often people make the wrong choices and risk leaving themselves unprepared for life’s financial realities. Making the right choices can lead to greater peace of mind.” Financia l planning is a discipline built on a hierarchy of needs. Psychologist Abraham M a slow f i r s t i nt r o duced the hierarchy in the form of a pyramid to explain human behavior, starting with basic

choices and even benefits selections: • Be Safe: The foundation of the pyramid is safety. Most people and their families need financial protection from dying prematurely, suffering a long-term or even a short-term disability, or becoming seriously ill. That means most people should prioritize signing up for hea lt hc a re c overage, life and disability insurance. • Build Savings: Once financial protection is in place, many of us should address shorterterm goals such as accumulating personal savings, building up cash for emergencies, and

eliminating short-term debts such a s credit card balances and car loans. Purchasing critical illness coverage can help protect sav ings, potentially avoid future debts, or provide a financial cushion in the event you or someone in your family suffers a serious illness or injury. • Plan for Retirement: Next, most of us need to plan for the future, which means building wealth and reducing debt over the long term. Saving for retirement through an employer’s 401(k) or other retirement savings program is a good long-term priority. Other long-term goals should be saving for college if you have children and eliminating mortgage debt. • P u r sue Dre a m s: Those who accomplish those goals and who are fortunate enough to have additional financial resources can then consider their financial dreams that fall into the esteem and growth categories. Travel, pursuing expensive hobbies, purchasing a vacation home and other goals should be pursued only after other needs are met. “We all have important f inancial needs, wants and dreams. The key is to understand the difference and to take care of your most basic protection needs first,” Sarsynski said. “ Your employer’s benefit package should be a place to start.”

Ceiling revamps: Leave the popcorn to the movies Brandpoint

Calling all DIY enthusiasts: Those popcorn ceilings have to go. They don’t get much love from homeowners or homebuyers, and they can really bring down the overall look and feel of an otherwise attractive room. Popcorn ceilings haven’t really represented stylish home design since disco was on the radio, though they’ve certainly lingered a

little longer. Whether you’re interested in a fresh look for your own family or updating your home before putting it on the market, upgrading from a popcorn ceiling is a great investment. As the largest uninterrupted space in any room, the ceiling gives you a golden opportunity to add interest or infuse your personality. Mark Clement, a general contractor and blog-

ger on MyFixItUplife, regularly advises homeowners on the best ways to create the most value and appeal in their home. “Ceilings really do make a greater impact than people realize,” he says. “The right choice can help a room soar — but you probably won’t get that

effect with a popcorn ceiling.” “New ceilings are a great update, and with today’s options, they’re incredibly easy to install yourself,” Clement says. “Stylish ceiling details really turn heads, and a new ceiling can make a dark or unin-

viting room feel bigger and brighter.” But, before you grab your scraper, Clement has a few words of caution about tackling popcorn ceiling removal as a DIY project. “To remove a popcorn ceiling, you have to really be committed to the task. You

Make your new house feel like home to your family pets can’t jump over it. Next, be sure your pet has plenty of shady spots where he can hide, nap or just chill. Consider adding an outdoor pet fountain so pets always have access to fresh water, and a pet door to allow your dog or cat to easily come and go from your backyard. Cosmetic concerns Unless you have a rare hairless breed, you probably deal with pet hair daily. As you’re decorating your new home, remember choosing carpeting close in color to your pet’s coat will make shed hair less visible. You should also keep in mind the size of your dog as you’re choosing hard flooring. Sturdy lami-

Moving into a new home is exciting — for the humans in the family. It can be less comfortable for pets who need time to adjust to a new environment, learn their way around and discover the best nap spots in their new home. As a loving pet parent, you want every member of your family to be as happy and comfortable as possible. Here are some tips to make your home more welcoming to your four-legged family members: Convenient dining Your furry friend will need his own space for meals — unless you don’t mind him begging at the table when you eat! Make sure he has a bowl that is appropriate for his size and always clean it between meals. Vets recommend feeding pets only once or twice a day, so you’ll want to stow away bowls when they’re not in use. Many homes, including manufactured homes offered by Clayton, can be customized with a pet friendly feature — pet dish drawers that allow you to conceal feeding dishes when they’re not needed, and slide the drawer open when it’s meal time. It’s a great way to keep your pet’s dining area near yours but also out of the way. Hang-out space

Moving into a new home is exciting — for the humans in the family. It can be less comfortable for pets who need time to adjust to a new environment, learn their way around and discover the best nap spots in their new home. Dogs and cats spend a lot of their day napping and relaxing, so be sure to provide a variety of spaces for your pet to just hang out — with you or on his own. Clayton builds pet-friendly spots into many of their home models, including window seats and hideaway cubbies where pets can nap in peace. Sunrooms are also great for both pets and their humans to enjoy the feeling of al-fresco dining while remaining securely inside.

Sun worshipping pets can also catch some rays while hanging out. Helpful grooming stations While many dogs enjoy a bath now and then, the process can be messy at home. Including a pet wash station with a hand-held hose in the mudroom ensures you’ll be able to clean up your dirty pup before he drags dirt through the house. Make sure you outfit your wash station with an ample supply of soft, absor-

bent towels, dog shampoo and all the grooming tools you’ll need to keep your pup looking great. Safe and happy outdoors Many pets enjoy a good romp outdoors, and you want your companion to be able to safely play in his outdoor environment. Start by adding a fence if you don’t already have one. Choose one with vertical slats or rails close enough together that a pet can’t slip through, and high enough that he or she

nates will hold up better if you have large dogs in the house, while smaller dogs and cats may have trouble getting traction on vinyl or hardwood floors. “When you’re buying a home, it’s important that you consider every member of the family, and pets are a huge part of our families,” says Clayton CEO Kevin Clayton. “Choosing to include pet-friendly features enhances not only a pet’s home life, but creates a better functioning environment for the homeowners too.” V i sit w w w.clay t onhomes.com to learn more about the pet features available or find a Home Center in your area.

What do you love most about winter? Is it the skiing and the sledding, the trips to the winter carnivals or seasonal get—togethers? There’s plenty to love about winter — and often that means driving out to enjoy those things. With sleet, snow and ice, winter weather can make your driving experience worrisome this time of year. But you don’t have to sacrifice your favorite winter activities just because of winter road conditions. Follow the

five winter driving tips below and you’ll be able to focus on the moments that make this season great. • Slow down. Sometimes the simplest tips are also the most effective. When you’re out on the road, reducing your speed by 50 percent during snowy weather is advised, just be sure you don’t slow down too much. Your car must maintain its momentum to avoid getting stuck in the snow. • Have the right vehicle for the job. Nothing is worse than feeing unsafe in your

car when bad weather hits. That’s why it is important to choose the right vehicle: one that is ready to take on wet and slick driving when winter weather strikes. The stylish and roomy Subaru Legacy comes standard with all-wheel drive, a feature that helps provide peace of mind when faced with difficult road conditions. The Legacy also comes available with Subaru EyeSight technology, an accident avoidance system that includes pre—collision braking, lane departure and sway warnings and rear cross traffic alert; all designed to provide an extra set of eyes and help keep you safe no matter where your winter travels take you. • Keep in touch. When traveling on winter roads, particularly over long distances, it’s good to alert others to your trip plans. Call loved ones and let them know where you are going, when you will leave and when you plan to arrive.

There’s plenty to love about winter — and often that means driving out to enjoy those things. This keeps those waiting for you in the know in case of an emergency so they can help if needed. And don’t forget to provide periodic updates during your trip so loved ones can rest easy. • Know how to handle a skid. Despite taking proper precautions, you still may find yourself sliding on an icy road. When you start to feel your vehicle enter a skid, don’t panic and just remember a few key techniques. First, take your foot off the gas — this will help to slow down and makes it easier to control the vehicle. In addition to laying off the

gas, fight the urge to slam on the brakes but tap the brake pedal lightly and frequently. This helps to regain some traction and also slow the car down. Last, but certainly not least, lightly turn the wheel in the direction of the swerve to help guide the car toward that direction, this will prevent the car from entering a spin. As a final tip, look in the direction you want to go, rather than fixating on what you are trying to avoid; it really does help. • Pack a winter weather kit. Sometimes, despite all your preparation, winter weather can still leave

you stranded. If this should happen to you, it’s good to be prepared. Pack a winter weather kit and keep it in the back of your car for such emergencies. Your kit should include a backup phone battery and charger, blankets, water, protein bars, a de— icer, a flashlight, a tow rope, radio and cat litter — in case your tires need a little extra traction. Hopefully you’ll never have to use any of these items, but should you get stuck, you’ll be happy you planned ahead. Braving through tough winter weather doesn’t have to stop you from enjoying your favorite seasonal activities with friends and family. Utilizing proper safety habits, packing the right supplies and choosing the right vehicle will help ensure you reach your destination safely to create winter memories that last a lifetime. What you need to know about all-season and all-terrain Brandpoint

If your vehicle is more to you than just a tool that gets you to and from work, then you’re always looking for new ways to maximize your drive time. As seasons change, your pursuits do as well which requires considerations about road conditions and weather when choosing the best equipment to get you where you want to go, without fail. So how do you make sure you can continue to chase the pursuits you love deep into the cold weather months? It starts with new tires, and if you’re in the market for some additional seasonal grip, you’re looking at all-season and allterrain options. Now which one is right for you? To help you in your decision making, BFGoodrich Tire experts Marcus Wilson and Dan Newsome offer an insider’s look at the differences between all-season and all-terrain tires. Use their advice to determine which one matches your pursuits to keep you enjoying your vehicle all season long. All-season tires: what you need know “Often times, winter causes us to scale back what we do and we lose the thrill of driving,” says Wilson, BFGoodrich Tires Ultra-High Performance marketing manager. “But all-season tires mean you don’t have to sacrifice your road time and they allow you to extend your driving activities later into the year.” Wilson says consumers can think of all-season tires as a “jack of all trades” option and that an all-season tire will give you more performance without having to switch to a specialty tire. For sporty coupe and sedan vehicles, the new gForce COMP-2 A/S tire gives

If your vehicle is more to you than just a tool that gets you to and from work, then you’re always looking for new ways to maximize your drive time. drivers the ability to accelerate faster, brake shorter and maintain control during any season. It’s great for wet, dry or light snowcovered roads. It also maintains grip in colder ambient temperatures (around 44 degrees Fahrenheit), even when no moisture is present on the road surface. Testing shows the tire stops up to 15 feet shorter on wet roads and 5 feet shorter on dry roads. “ W herever there’s a paved road, you can typically take an all-season ultra-high performance tire, like the new g-Force COMP-2 A/S tire, and you enjoy it,” Wilson says. All-terrain tires: taking your knowledge off-road If your seasonal pursuits will take you off traditional paved roads, you’ll want a tough all-terrain tire according to Newsome, BFGo-

odrich Tires country marketing manager for Light Truck Tires. “For any outdoor activities that ignite your spirit of adventure, finding a good all-terrain tire is where your journey begins,” he says. Newsome adds that allterrain tires are perfect for vehicles that have more horsepower and torque, and need the perfect tire for “adventure drives.” He

says when BFGoodrich started developing the second generation of its raceproven and most advanced light truck tire ever, the new All-Terrain T/A(R) KO2 tire, they started by asking their customers what they wanted from an all-terrain tire. “It came down to the three T’s,” Newsome says. “Toughness, tread life and traction.” With this in mind, the new KO2 fea-

tures a rugged durable tire that lasts twice as long on gravel roads and 15 percent longer on asphalt, according to off-road test results. The tire also offers 10 percent greater traction in mud and 19 percent greater traction in snow, as well as reinforced sidewalls to help prevent a blowout. The KO2 also carries the RMA Severe Snow Rating (3 Peak Mountain Snowflake symbol) which indicates that it’s an excellent choice for owners of pickups and other rugged vehicles to use on-road as well as off-road in winter conditions. “An all-terrain tire should give you those all-season capabilities,” says Newsome, “and it should also be there for you when it’s time to go off-road.” Finding the right tires for you When trying to determine which tires are best for you, keep this handy checklist in mind. You’ll want all-season tires if: • You are driving in an environment where road conditions change frequently all year due to inclement weather • You want to enjoy driv-

ing confidence in rain, light snow and cold, in addition to dry pavement • You pursue driving passions where braking, accelerating and maintaining control matter You’ll want all-terrain tires if: • Your adventures take you on unpaved roads • The fall and winter mean hiking, camping, fishing or generally turning off paved roads • Traction and toughness are key to helping you continue your adventure Start your search for the perfect tires If you loathe the idea of abandoning your hobbies because the weather has changed, replacing your tires can help. Whether you need all-season or allterrain tires depends on your pursuits, the amount of traction, toughness and performance you need, how you plan to use your vehicle and where you plan to go. Whichever you choose, your new tires will let you enjoy the changing weather in the way that works best for you and make the most of this season in your favorite machine.
