Once again, many thanks to everybody who supported the Team Time Trial, either by riding, supporting, or both. It was a great relief when it became clear that we would have a dry afternoon, after last year’s somewhat windswept conditions. Many congratulations go to Arctic Tacx RT for taking the overall win, and to Cambridge University for their victories in both of the student championships. I also have to acknowledge the extraordinary result of the dead-heating Sheffield teams. Magnificent speed judging, or was one team a clone of the other? Impressively, there were no non-starting teams this year although this would, of course, have been bad news if we’d had a line of reserves waiting to take part. Which brings me to the question of why the turnout of non-student teams was down from about 40 to less than 20. This was obviously a bit alarming, as we’d become accustomed to getting more than the maximum allowance of 80 teams, plus some reserves.

As discussed on the next page, the BUCS Championships won’t be attached to the Antelope TTT from next year, and so I need to understand why the entry was so significantly reduced. Was there a clash with some other event? Are people wary of getting their entries returned? Is the new course too tough? Is the event going out of fashion? I realise that it’s tricky asking those questions to those of you who did actually ride, but if we do this event again next year, I would like to be fairly sure of getting a good turnout. If it does all go ahead, my current plan would be to move the date to mid-June. How does that sound? On a more confident, positive note, I would like to offer my sincere thanks to all those of you who marshalled, pushed, timed, made tea etc. I would like to highlight the huge contributions from High Wycombe CC and Cambridge University, but not forget the kind work done by members of VC10 and Thame CC, and a couple of other loyal TTT supporters…

The future for the BUCS TTT Championships? The BUCS TTT is a victim of its own success. For several years prior to 2014, we’ve had more entries than available spaces. In the normal way, the limit for a 3-up TTT would be 40 teams. We effectively doubled this by applying to promote two events consecutively. As it is (with anything much more than 40 teams), we have to find two complete sets of officials, typically asking each to work for at least two hours (sometimes in the wind & rain!). See the list at the end of this document if you aren’t sure how many people are involved. Having too many entries is not an awful problem to have, but it is nonetheless a problem. Some teams can be offered reserve slots, which is okay but not a great solution because of the uncertainty around whether they get a ride, and when their start time will be. And some teams just have to have their entries returned, which is not really okay at all. Last year, BUCS raised the question of whether I could promote the championships as a completely separate event. This would then allow up to 80 spaces for student teams, which would certainly be sufficient. They didn’t expect me to do it just out of the kindness of my heart, but it wasn’t something I could agree to. Assuming that the underlying event (the “Antelope Racing Team TTT”, which the championships are attached to) was to continue, then I would have two completely separate events to look after. We did talk around the options, but the eventual conclusion was that BUCS would need to find a university or another organiser, with whom they could work to promote a TTT in 2015. As it happened (almost inevitably!) total entries were down this year, and so there were no reserves or returned entries. But I think, after 9 years, it’s probably about time for me to hand the BUCS TTT back. I sincerely hope someone steps forward, and the event continues. The use of BUCScore for entries has made that aspect much easier than before, and apart from needing extra pushers-off, it shouldn’t be much different from a normal time trial promotion. Ever since Rachel Hughes (winner in 2006 – see above) first suggested bolting the BUSA championships onto my fledgling Team Time Trial promotion, I’ve enjoyed being associated with the student community again. I’ll certainly miss the sea of excited faces waiting to collect numbers, or discussing how windy it is out there. Perhaps a few of you will make the trip back to Chalgrove in the future. It would be good to see you.
