DCO CORNER 2018 Leadership Summit Saturday April 14, 2018 8:30 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. (The Summit is free, and lunch and snacks will be provided) South Shore Trinity Lutheran Church 2480 S. Shore Blvd., White Bear Lake, MN In the past, the doors of the church opened inward, but now the people of our communities are no longer coming in through our doors as they once did. Approximately 78 percent of LCMS congregations have reached a plateau or are declining while, at the same time, the number of people claiming little or no connection to God through His Son, Jesus is rapidly growing. God is calling the church to open our doors outward as the people of God seek to establish connections, form relationships, and invite new disciples of Jesus into life focused on His good gifts. The book, Hinges: Opening Your Church’s Doors to the Community will be the focus of the Leadership Summit. Through extensive statistical research, personal pastoral experience, and practical work with over one thousand churches, the authors, have found the eight key factors that open the doors of the church outward and empower the church to have an impact upon the community. “Drawing on years of both research and experience, the authors help inwardly -focused congregations shift to the adventure of mission just outside their front doors.” – Greg Finke, Author of Joining Jesus on His Mission. You will learn, with other congregations, about some practical steps for beginning, increasing, or continuing activities that convey the spiritual vitality of Word and Sacrament ministry through our congregation for the sake of our community. Please contact either Pastor Hinz or Craig Cooper to register. (We both have copies of the book, Hinges: Opening Your Church’s Doors to the Community if you would like to learn more about this Leadership Summit.

Psalms, Hymns, and Spiritual Songs

“Sharing the Caring Christ With All People”

Sauk Rapids, MN

Music and Worship Notes

In Ephesians, chapter 5, we read: …be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord… As a devotional tool, or when writing a message in a greeting card, I like to go to the psalms and hymns for inspiration. When looking for words of comfort to send a grieving friend or an uplifting thought for a birthday or anniversary, I start thumbing through an old TLH that sits on my piano at home. The last card I sent was to my Dad on his 80th birthday. He is suffering from a form of dementia and cannot understand the card. But I wanted to send a verse that summed up his catechism training as he was always faithful in studying the teaching Sunday School. I landed on an Easter hymn that we always used to sing at the Easter Sunrise Service at Trinity in Brewster as I was growing up, “Like the Golden Sun Ascending.” Verse 6 includes all the following: the birth, death, and resurrection of Jesus, the Word and Sacraments, and the promise of Heaven to come.

For the joy Thine advent gave me, For Thy holy, precious Word; For Thy Baptism, which doth save me, For Thy blest Communion board; For Thy death, the bitter scorn, For Thy resurrection morn, Lord, I thank Thee and extol Thee, And in heav'n I shall behold Thee. I was disappointed that this hymn did not make it into LSB until I looked at verse two and realized that it is. It is called, “Thanks to Thee, O Christ, Victorious.” LSB condensed the hymn into three verses and used the title from the opening line of verse two. During the weeks preceding Easter, we used the Psalm for the day in place of the Introit. I found it interesting to learn that there is indeed a specified psalm for each service and to see how it fits in with the other lessons. I would encourage you to look to the psalms and hymns and spiritual songs for Words from the Lord to strengthen you for the journey. When I am looking for words of comfort for others, I am also comforted. We will be observing “Good Shepherd Sunday” (the Fourth Sunday of Easter) this month. With that thought in mind, a blessing from Hebrews: 20 Now may the God of peace who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant, 21 equip you with everything good that you may do his will, working in us[a] that which is pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen. (Hebrews 13:20-21) Daniel Reineke, Traditional Music Director (320)656-0963 [email protected]

TRANSFER THE BLESSINGS What does it mean to leave a legacy? Leaving a legacy means sharing your blessings with others. It means passing down your time, talents and treasures to the people and causes that you care about. You don’t need great wealth to support organizations that matter most to you. The first step to a meaningful legacy is creating a plan that matches your interests and circumstances. If you would like information on how you can create a legacy of giving, Mr. David Priebe, a retired business attorney and Gift Planning Counselor for LCMS is available for confidential consultations. He can be reached at 612-508-4640.

Prayer Shawls – Lifegiving Gifts Shawls are provided to all who are physically, spiritually or emotionally ill or for persons undergoing life changing events. Need not be a member to take one. You may pick up one today at the information desk.

What is "Empty Bowls?" April 14th 11am to 7pm at City Hope Church, 413 Franklin Ave. NE, St. Cloud Empty Bowls Soup Feed Benefit & Silent Auction participants can show their support of the work hundreds of St. Cloud area students and volunteers who have made a new bowl just for them. Each Soup Feed attendee pays $10 (individual) or $30 (family) ($2.00 more at the door) and each person receives a handmade bowl, soup donated by a St. Cloud restaurant, bread, and a beverage, and enjoys a variety of entertainment. Attendees keep their "Benefactor Bowls" after the event as a reminder that someone else's bowl is always empty. Empty Bowls is an internationally recognized program designed to draw attention to the problem of hunger in the United States and the World. It is the brainchild of the Imagine/Render Group; a501c3 non-profit organization dedicated to positive and lasting social change through the arts, education, and projects that build the community. In 1990, a high school art teacher in Michigan helped his students solve a problem. They were searching for a creative way to raise funds to support a food drive. What evolved was a class project to make ceramic bowls for a fundraising meal. Guests were served a simple meal of soup and bread, and were invited to keep their bowls as a reminder of hunger in the world. By the following year, the originators had developed the concept into EMPTY BOWLS, a project to provide support for food banks, soup kitchens and other organizations that fight hunger. Since then, EMPTY BOWLS events have been held throughout the world, and millions of dollars have been raised to combat hunger.

Last year Lutheran Island Camp celebrated 65 years of serving the people of Minnesota and the Dakotas. We were blessed with a significant increase in the number of children, families and groups that used the Island and Christ Serve Ranch. During 2018 we plan that those numbers will continue to increase as we provide some wonderful programs for children ages 3-18. Our theme in 2018 is “By Faith” and is based on Hebrews 11 where we read all about God’s people whose lives were changed as a result of their God given Faith. During 2018 we believe that God will touch the lives of many young people. He will strengthen their faith. He will give them guidance in their young lives. God will engage them in reflective learning about His creation, each of our sins, and the wonderful gift of grace that He provides for us. On Sunday, April 22, Ken Erlandson will be visiting our congregation to share information, answer questions, and register our children for summer camp. If you are interested in a camp scholarship, contact the church office for information. 252-3670 Our goal is to have many of our children ready to sign up for camp on Sunday, April 22. When we do that, we will be able to help each other with rides, encourage children to go to the same camps, and help the camp plan for the summer. So, pick up your brochure on the credenza in the narthex, decide which camps you are interested in and get ready to sign up!
