elcome to worship at First Baptist. We are so glad that you have joined us today. From the heart of downtown Knoxville, we are touching lives around the world, sharing the ministry and life of Jesus Christ. If you need further information about our church, or desire a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, our ministers will be available following the service at each exit. Please prepare for worship by:  Silencing cell phones, pagers and PDAs.  Encouraging children five years old and older to worship using the printed supplements available from ushers.  Taking advantage of our Preschool Extended Session designed specifically for children age 3 and under. Pagers are provided to communicate with parents in case of emergency. Children age 4 years 1st grade may attend Passage, our children’s worship experience, after the children’s sermon, or remain with their parents in the service.  Noting that restrooms are located directly behind the choir loft. Becoming a Member You are welcome and encouraged to come to the front of the church to meet with a minister during the Hymn of Response to request baptism or to join the church. If you are not ready to do this, please complete the information in the tear-off portion of this worship folder and place it in the offering plate and a minister will contact you this week. Or, you may simply call the church office to request an appointment with any minister. Continue the Experience Check your local television provider’s guide for information about the rebroadcast of today’s worship service. The worship service is available on DVD and can be obtained by calling the church office. The message for today’s worship service will also be available later this week online at www.fbcknox.org.

Life of the Church continued… Bluegrass and BBQ Block Party! September 14, 4:00-8:00 pm Don’t miss it! We will gather on the front lawn for the Bluegrass and BBQ Block Party. Gold Rush and The Knox County Jug Stompers will provide the bluegrass sounds; WDVX will also be on hand with us. Love That BBQ will pull up a huge smoker and cater the event and we also have games to play. Tables, chairs, and blankets will help us feel at home. While the music and games are free, tickets will be required for the BBQ dinner. More details will be available later this week. Tickets are $7 and there is a sign up sheet at the reception desk. This will be a great event to invite a friend to join you. We will also have flyers out across downtown inviting our community to come and join us as well. This should be a great event to kick off our fall together. Clergy Training for Faith Based Initiative The Tennessee Faith and Justice Alliance (TFJA), in conjunction with volunteer lawyers from the Knoxville Bar Assoc. and Legal Aid of East Tennessee, will provide training to identify the need for legal assistance, including learning how to spot legal problems that affect the lives of their congregants and information on existing legal and social services resources in East Tennessee. This event is open to clergy and interested laity of all religious groups in the Knoxville area. The training will be the first TFJA event held in Knoxville, and will be held at First Baptist Church, September 16 from 12:00 until 2:00 PM. A sandwich lunch buffet will be available for $6.00.

First Scripture Reading (1 Kings 19:1-5)

Wayne Smith

1

Now Ahab told Jezebel everything Elijah had done and how he had killed all the prophets with the sword. 2 So Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah to say, “May the gods deal with me, be it ever so severely, if by this time tomorrow I do not make your life like that of one of them.” 3

Elijah was afraid and ran for his life. When he came to Beersheba in Judah, he left his servant there, 4 while he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness. He came to a broom bush, sat down under it and prayed that he might die. “I have had enough, LORD,” he said. “Take my life; I am no better than my ancestors.” 5 Then he lay down under the bush and fell asleep. All at once an angel touched him and said, “Get up and eat.”

Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.” 37 He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee along with him, and he began to be sorrowful and troubled. 38 Then he said to them, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.”

Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.”

Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Couldn’t you men keep watch with me for one hour?” he asked Peter. 41 “Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

The Life of the Church

Sanctuary Choir Before You I Kneel (A Workers Prayer) Keith and Kristyn Getty / arr. Mary McDonald Duet by Patti and Steve Foster

Before You I kneel my Master and Maker, to offer the work of my hands, for this is the day You've given Your servant; I will rejoice and be glad for the strength I have to live and breathe, for each skill Your grace has given me, for the needs and opportunities that will glorify Your great name. Before You I kneel and ask for Your goodness; to cover the work of my hands. For patience and peace to shape all my labor, Your grace for thorns in my path, flow within me like a living stream. Wear away the stones of pride and greed, 'Til Your ways are dwelling deep in me, and a harvest of life is grown. Before You we kneel, our Master and Maker, establish the work of our hands. And order our steps to seek first Your kingdom, in every small and great task. May we live the gospel of Your grace, Serve Your purpose in our fleeting days. Then our lives will bring eternal praise, and all glory to Your great name! and all glory to Your great name!

Minister On Call Number With the change of our telephone system, the direct number to reach the Minister on Call was discontinued. Now to reach the minister on call, please dial the main number (865-546-9661). There is an unlisted option 9 which will put you in touch with the Minister on Call. You do not have to listen to the entire message, just press “9” after the voicemail answers, after business hours and weekends. Gameday Parking Parking will again be available in our lower Trentham Hall parking lot for all UT home football games. Spots are $20 and first come, first served. The lot opens three hours prior to kickoff for games. All proceeds help fund our biennial Youth Ministry International Mission Trip. Help us spread the word to your friends and family. The address for the parking lot is 1050 Locust Street SW. Thank you for your continued support of Youth Ministry @ 1B! WOMEN ON MISSION (WOM) Tuesday, September 2, 10:00 am, Room 302 Join us at 10:00 am for our Mission Study. At 11:00 am, we will gather in Adult 6 for the monthly meeting and installation of officers for 2014-2016. Wanda Edmondson will install our new officers and give an overview of the Deacon Ministry Extended Care Team. This will be a great time to renew/begin a connection with other women at FBC as we study, learn, and do missions. Lunch ($6) will be served in Trentham Hall following the meeting. We hope you will make plans to attend. Bridges Out of Poverty Training Tuesdays, starting September 2, 6:00-8:15 pm Join us for a six-week training series to learn more about the impact of poverty on people and businesses in our community. We will explore the hidden rules of economic classes and learn how to better enter into relationship with those living in our community. The cost is $5 for training materials. For six weeks, we will meet every Tuesday night, starting September 2nd, from 6:00-8:15 pm in the Hill Street Training Room. Please RSVP to Joy Claybrook at [email protected] to reserve your spot. Letters from Dad” Kick Off Meeting Sunday, September 7th, at 3:00 pm in Trentham Hall We are doing a one hour kick-off event for the Letters from Dad initiative. Join us to find out what this program is all about and invite your golf buddies and other friends to join you! Be sure to sign up and order your seminar materials while you're there. There will be videos and interactive experiences that will let you catch a glimpse of why we are offering this opportunity and what it can mean for us and our families. The seminars will be held for six-weeks on Sundays, September 21st through October 26th from 3:00-5:00 pm in Trentham Hall. To sign-up email Tom at [email protected] or call the church office. Grief Share Tuesdays, 6:00 pm, starting September 9 Grief is a normal part of life that we all experience at some time. Getting through those times of grief is not always easy, but there is help for getting through it. We will begin an 11-week seminar called Grief Share for those who have lost loved ones. Grief Share, a combination of video and group discussion, will begin on Tuesday, September 9th at 6:00 pm and continue for 11-weeks in the Mercy classroom. To reserve your place, call the church office or email Pam at [email protected]. "Our Space and One Other" Our Facilities Committee, in their ongoing efforts to spruce up our facilities, has come up with a great plan for us to help clean up our buildings. It's called "Our Space and One Other." The idea is for each group that meets in the church - such as Sunday School, Women on Mission, Choir - to take on the job of cleaning their meeting space and then cleaning one of the common areas of the church such as the Blue Room, a section of the Sanctuary, or another common area. The date for the event is September 27th (UT is playing away). Please talk with your group and plan to be part of "Our Space and One Other” to help make our facilities bright and clean.
