THE BOTTOM LINE A Publication of the Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce

The Great Bottom Line Reboot

The start of a new year is always refreshing and this year is no different. 2015 was a transition year for the Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce and we have been making slight adjustments along the way as our President & CEO has come onboard to build on the success the Chamber had already been experiencing. At the last Board of Directors retreat, the staff were asked to participate in the strategic planning as it pertains to the day to day operations of the Chamber. Thanks to this collaborative effort with the Board, a direction for the coming year began to take shape. Our program of work centers on four priorities:

January 2016

Ask us how to be our 2016 Bottom Line Sponsor Pillar of the Community Award

Stewardship - Establish Organizational stability for long-term growth through strong governance, best practices, and resource alignment. Stakeholder ROI - Deliver mission-centric programs, benefits, services and initiatives of value and relevance to Chamber members. Business and Economic Development - Advance Springfield area business and economic development through leadership, advocacy, business-centric programs, events and education initiatives. The Value Proposition- Communicate the value of the Chamber and Chamber members by connecting impacts to relevance using facts, stories and testimonials through public relations, intentional marketing, and promotional strategies At the same time staff have committed to serving members with these guiding priciples in mind: We serve as Advisors, Champions and Advocates to our stakeholders. We Think Unique and Seek to Tweak in order to enhance operational efficiencies and successful outcomes of mission-critical goals. We favor Quality over Quantity in our operational, program and service line delivery. We favor relevance in our objectives, and clearly communicate results. We Begin and End at 10,000 feet. We are problem-solvers; requiring that we be active listeners and show respect for ideas, perspectives and experiences different than our own. As part of our ongoing evaluative process, our team got together to think about tweaks for all that we do including the Bottom Line. And while many ideas about our newsletter were discussed the team came up with an exciting idea to add value and relevant content to each edition of the newsletter. Beginning in the February Bottom Line, each version of this newsletter will have a focus on an industry segment of our membership. The companies that make up that segment will be asked to submit articles of relevance to our membership and those articles will make up not only the cover story but also a special content section. Not only will we ask them to submit articles, we will ask them for the graphics to go along with the articles. This will give anyone who submits an article an opportunity to Continued on page 3... share their business insights as well as some of

March - Advertising/Marketing May - Go Play/Recreation July - Hospitality/Travel September - Nonprofits November - Small Business December - Health

As always, we look forward to bringing you the latest and greatest information about Chamber members. As I have the privilege meet with folks in their place of business, it is clear that they are not only professionals but passionate about the community in which we all work and play. I have often wished that other members could see what I get to see while working at the Chamber and interact with all of you. And to think that this reboot will allow members to see just how passionate other members are about what they do, what they produce, and what they promote...this is most exciting. Bear in mind that this new undertaking, while empowering, is a new concept for us. We are committed to making each and every edition of the Bottom Line one that you as a member can be most proud of. We will always link advertising to company websites, create web links to our new member section, and provide our members with advertising opportunities. The author Christopher Cavanaugh said, “Storytellers, by the very act of telling, communicate a radical learning that changes lives and the world: telling stories is a universally accessible means through which people make meaning”. This Chamber is full of members that change lives and our world on a regular basis. This reboot will allow them to tell their own stories to provide you the opportunity to make your own meaning.

Highlights of the University of Oregon Oregon Regional Economic Indexes for October 2015 Release date: : December 23, 2015. Sponsor: KeyBank

Regional economies continued to post strong results in October with all areas growing at an above average pace. Recall that “zero” for these measures indicates relative average growth; each region has its own underlying growth rate. New housing units permitted remain weak in the Eugene-Springfield, Salem, and Rogue Valley regions, but are contributing positively in the Portland metro region. Residential housing sales, however, remain strong in all regions. Low unemployment rates are boosting measures in all regions; the impact is particularly strong in Salem and the Rogue Valley. Low levels of initial unemployment claims are pushing the measures sharply higher and signal continued job growth. All but two components (housing permits and other services employment) made neutral or better contributions to the Salem measure. The measures indicate that economic activity in the Portland, Salem, and Eugene-Springfield areas is increasing at paces consistent with previous expansions. The Bend region is growing at a pace similar to moderately better than that experienced prior to the housing bubble of the last decade. Growth Latest Eugene/Springfield Employment Numbers

remains below that of the bubble-era, but is more likely to prove sustainable for a longer time. The Rogue Valley region still lags relative to the pace of activity experienced prior to the most recent recession. Still, the region has made substantial progress over the past two years and is now growing at a better than average pace.. Career Exploration - A Great Success Kudos go out to Springfield Public Schools and the Chamber’s Education Committee on the new program which replaced Problem Solving in the Workplace. About 125 Springfield students had the opportunity to chat about their career choices with the very professionals in those industries throughout the metroplex. The folks at Lane Community College offered the students a campus tour in addition to hosting the Campus Exploration at the Center for Meeting and Learning. A very successful first year and we look forward to the growth of this new program.

Education Volunteers The chamber’s education committee reached over 2,500 students with the major changes made to programs last year. Now in 2016, the committee has continued their pledge to provide meaningful programs that reach as many, if not or more, Springfield Public School students. The elementary program for 5th graders, Real Game of Life, was expanded to all 5th graders of the Springfield District last year. The increase proved successful; and all the schools involved are excited to participate again in the program. The 4 Real Games of Life programs will be hosted at each middle school and will have 8th graders helping all the way through. Each program will need about 12-15 volunteers to assist the 5th graders with the 8th grade helper as they play the life-sized board game. High School Career Day, for the second year in a row, will be hosted in February and will see both Springfield and Thurston attending. The committee, along with the hosting high school (Springfield) has worked out a schedule in order to invite Willamette Leadership Academy, A3, Gateways and the Springfield online students. Format changes made last year will continue with a slight alteration in program length. The program needs 50 business volunteers to have booths. Middle School Career Day sees all 8th graders of Springfield Schools in a 4 hour span. Each middle school is given an opportunity to visit a variety of different career booths and participate in mock interviews. About 30-35 volunteers are needed for business booths and 30 or more needed for mock interviews. For information on the committee or volunteering at any of these fun-filled programs, please contact the Education Committee staff liaison, Katie Yeager or Committee Chair, Brenda Hansen. 2015: A Year of Milestones

in Lane County; that’s not the case today. About 1,500 people remain without homes. Nearly half have been homeless for a long time. More than a quarter suffer from a mental illness. Over the years, as needs arose, ShelterCare stepped up with solutions. In 1978, we offered the area’s first permanent housing for individuals with psychiatric disabilities; today our Supported Housing program helps more than 220 people. In 1990, we opened Oregon’s first apartments for brain injury survivors; in 2015 the Uhlhorn Program celebrated its 25th anniversary and serves as a model for other states. In 2006, we launched Lane County’s inaugural Housing First initiative; next year, a new state grant will allow us to expand Housing First to a total of 130 clients. Even with these successes, many needs remain unmet. Adults with untreated mental illness are living on our streets and families struggling with financial burdens are living in their cars. As a community, we must do better. Yet as daunting as the challenges seem, those of us at ShelterCare know that over the next 45 years and beyond, we won’t be working alone. We take heart in friends and supporters like you, partners in our mission to provide hope, opportunity, and dignity to every person living in our community. Thank you for all you do! On behalf of everyone at ShelterCare, I wish you and your family health and happiness in 2016. -Susan Ban Executive Director

What You Helped Accomplish in 2015

Dear Friend, We did it! With the help of amazing people like you, ShelterCare, last year, changed the lives of nearly 1,200 individuals who had been struggling with homelessness, mental illness, and traumatic brain injuries. Thank you for your generous support! In 2015, we also marked an important but bittersweet milestone, our 45th anniversary. When ShelterCare opened its doors on Christmas Eve 1970 and welcomed homeless families into a safe but temporary shelter, the founders thought the organization would be short-lived. At that time, homelessness was not a serious problem
