Meeting President Graeme welcomed our guest speaker Diane Harries and her partner Royce Johnson an ex tutor at PN Ucol, also Mike Miller and Ray Bint from Rotary South. Garth introduced Bryce Robb an arborist from Christchurch who has shifted to Wanganui. Note was also made of the planned new roof for the Velodrome and the potential benefit to our City, especially the motel trade. Catering again from our excellent Cossie Club and it couldn't help but be noticed that Cranleigh had a huge plate of potatoes, small volume vegetables and meat, demonstrating his strong affinity to Ireland. Sergeant Mike, a la Idi Ameen, fined Coxie's table for talking out of turn, David Hood stole his wife's car keys so she couldn't get the fish and chips, and President Graeme for taking selfies while driving. Note was also made of Sister Mathematical and Sister Logical.

Reports Mike Trailer raffle rosters are being circulated and emphasised the time was for 2 hour stints on Saturday’s and Sunday’s aiming to sell 1000 tickets per weekend. Cranleigh The Bushy Park golden oldies had laid 4 cubic metres of concrete at the front fence and around the stables now ready for the fence rails and battens.

Tony That flyers for Rotary Stakes on Saturday 18th November are available to be given out, as well as A3 posters. Marion During an indoctrination weekend in Auckland, Rotary North’s Project Toolkit fund raiser was presented as an inspirational model. Leith The books in schools (Duffy Books) released to Tawhero School were very much appreciated by teachers and students. This worthwhile project, costing around $5000, is shared equally between the School and Rotary.

Guest Speaker Our guest speaker Diane was introduced by Cranleigh mentioning that she went from Sydney to Wales in ‘78 and then finally to NZ in 2000 - initially Rotorua then Wellington in a position of senior Pharmacist, then did a Fine Arts degree with interests in photography, tramping, printmaking and book binding. Her talk entitled ‘Tramping in the Coromandel Peninsula’ focused on the Kauaeranga Valley with difficult tracks to Table Mountain. She explained the beautiful scenery supported by a large slide collection showing the numerous mosses and their adaptive mechanisms and damage to the Kauri trees by Dieback Disease caused by Phytophthora agathidicidia, a soil borne water mould. Old logging tracks with stone paths for carrying in supplies by animal to the loggers and railway tracks and water races for taking out the timber. At the end of a long day climbing to look out onto both coasts from atop of the Pinnacles. Other interesting areas were the Broken Hill gold mining area leading around to Sailors Grave and Lynch Bay. Mention also made of the bird life at Miranda especially the Godwits which fly an astonishing 12,000 Kilometres from Alaska to NZ non-stop in 8 days. Diane was thanked by Marion Johnston who was impressed with the quality of her photography.

Leith That there were 2 students -brightest of the bright, whose names had been put forward for the Science and Technology Forum to be held in Auckland in January 2018 - you may remember Jackie Hazelhurst gave a very enlightening talk re her experience gained at this Forum earlier this year. The cost to Rotary was expected to be $1000 per student for 2018 intake. Terry 17 people had put their names forward as drivers for the Food Bank Drive and there were 3 extra volunteers who came forward tonight. Details re briefing to these drivers will be given at a later date Graeme again thanked the speakers and closed with the following thought To those who say Nothing is Impossible - tell them to try slamming a revolving door.
