Conversation Questions 1. *Have you ever been in a situation where you felt like an outsider? Why did you feel that way? What happened?
2. *Read 1 Corinthians 11:17-34. What verse or phrase stands out to you most? Why?
3. Based on verse 21, it sounds like the Corinthian church would get together for meals. Everyone would bring their own food and drink and this resulted in a big disparity between rich and poor at the table. Communion was apparently a part of this meal. And the rich appear to have been oblivious to what was going on. 1. What do you observe about Paul’s reaction to this? Why do you think he feels so strongly about the issue?
2. Why do you think it’s so harmful to mix the Lord’s Supper with this kind of meal-time behavior?
4. Eating the Lord’s Supper in an “unworthy manner” (v.27) means that a person is remembering Christ’s sacrifice while simultaneously living a life that is contrary to Jesus’ teaching and example. 1. What does Paul say is going to happen to us if we participate in the Lord’s Supper this way (v.27-30)?
5. What do you think it means to “judge ourselves truly” and what is the result? (v.31-32) How is this good news?
As you reflect, is there anyone in your church gathering whose experience with the church you’ve been oblivious to? Is there anyone in the church gathering that you think the Lord would want you to reach out to? Ask God for wisdom and opportunity to do that.
