Dates are often written a short way. The number of the month may be used instead of writing out the name of the month. Suppose you wanted to write March 2, 2010, the short way. Here is how to do it: 1. Write the number of the month. March is number 3. 2. After the number of the month, put a slash like this: / Now you have 3/ 3. Now write the day of the month. Then put another slash. Now you have 3/2/ 4. Now write the last two numbers of the year. Drop the 20 in 2010. Now you have 3/2/10
On the lines, write each date the short way. 1. November 14, 2003_ _________________

PUBLIC HOLIDAYS
On public holidays, most people do not have to go to work or school. These holidays are New Year’s Day, Presidents’ Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. When a holiday falls on a Saturday or a Sunday, workers and students are usually given a day off “in observance” of the holiday. This day off will usually be the Friday before or the Monday after the actual holiday. Look at a calendar for this year. On the lines below, write the day of the week that the public holiday will be celebrated. (If a holiday is “observed” on a different day, write that day as

CALENDAR HISTORY
As far back as 25,000 years ago, people had ways to keep track of the passage of time. The first calendars were marks on bones. They showed how the phases of the moon, from new moon to new moon, divided a year into 12 time periods. This is where the word “month” comes from. This kind of calendar was known as the lunar calendar. Later, a calendar was made based on the movement of the earth to the sun. It was called the solar calendar. Neither of these calendars measured the exact time of a year, which is 365 days, 5 hours, 48 minutes, and 46 seconds. A more accurate calendar, called the Julian calendar, was designed over 2,000 years ago and was used for many years. It, too, was not entirely correct. Today, we use the Gregorian calendar which most accurately shows the exact measurement of a year’s time. When was the Gregorian calendar first used? Follow the instructions below to find the answer.
On the calendar, circle: the last date of the third month
Halloween the first date of fall the end of the second week of May New Year’s Day the fifth day of the second month
the middle of the eleventh month the date when summer begins Christmas Day the last day of the fourth month
