Resource Discussion Tab Called to Serve J.I. Packer has been a staple author and mind in modern Christianity. A number of years ago, he wrote a helpful commentary on the book of Nehemiah called A Passion for Faithfulness. In it, he has a chapter called Called to Serve. One section highlights the call to care deeply about the practical needs of others…and to humble yourself to share with others your practical needs. Read “A Clear Call” (pp58-63) and discuss as a group with questions such as: 1. When Packer uses the words, “consecration to God’s service”, what might he mean in our day and time? In this part of the country and in this church?
 2. What words of caution do you find he has for those who are apathetic toward the needs of others? What remedy might be needed in such cases?
 3. The last paragraph in the assigned section (p63) highlights the difference in our desired timing and God’s sovereign timing. How might this be played out in our lives? What parts of your faith might be challenged by this “delay?”
 4. Why is it important for the Christian to learn to ask for others to participate in meeting their needs? Where would you draw the line between asking others for help and the requirement to take responsibility for your own needs?
 5. What are some ways the group can grow in being aware of others’ needs? …in meeting them? …in sharing them? Pray for specific needs that may be shared. Then pray for growth in this area. If the conversation goes in the right direction, consider taking a next step by asking someone to meet a need or even assigning someone to organize a way to track group needs.
