Holy Communion A Musical Worship Celebration With Carly Kuntz & Kitt Foss SUNDAY FELLOWSHIP

Cookie Fellowship 9:30 -10:30 a.m.

We seek to embody grace and hospitality in the manner of Jesus, nurturing our diverse spiritual journeys and joining together as a servant community to help realize a more loving and just world.

A year ago, I began serving as Director of Outreach Ministries. As I reflect, I am overwhelmed and touched by countless meaningful experiences. These experiences have helped change how I serve and lead. In the past, I viewed our outreach programming as “services” with the goal of providing services for individuals in need. Today, I find myself called to ministry, and carrying out Outreach Ministries has become just that—a ministry. It has involved a lot of listening, praying and serving with our homeless brothers and sisters. We are all individuals, but until we see each other as brothers and sisters, meaningful relationships based on serving in the manner of Jesus are dead. Reading and understanding the Bible has become important to me, and I am drawn to the Book of James, whose scripture speaks to my heart and affirms my calling and passion to serve: “James 2:17 So you see, it isn’t enough just to have faith.

You must also do good to prove that you have it. Faith that doesn’t show itself by good works is no faith at all—it is dead and useless.”

“Actions take the place of words and heart speaks to heart”

For me, serving in the manner of Jesus means meeting people where they are with an open heart and without judgment. In this manner, “actions take the place of words and heart speaks to heart.” The act of Jesus washing the disciples’ feet exemplifies this type of ministry. It is a way of caring for one another like no other. It means stepping outside the comfortable, predictable model of opening our doors and expecting people to come to us for predetermined assistance during set “office hours.” Partnering with Stone Soup and Feeding the State Street Family and being involved in Street Outreach has had a profound impact and has afforded me a special opportunity to serve in the manner of Jesus—seeking out the most vulnerable in need, whether under a bridge or just steps away from our church on a cold night, to serve a small cup of soup, provide a blanket and to listen, offering caring support. When I think in terms of “ministry” and “family” I see stereotypes melting away and the words “us” and “them” falling by the wayside. Outreach Ministries involves sharing, trusting, finding common ground and discovering “heart speaks to heart opportunities.” Individually we are a mere thread in this tapestry of life, but our threads woven together craft a diverse and stunning tapestry beyond imagination. Let us find opportunities to weave our threads together and continue to craft a tapestry with no end.

Pastor Carly’s Column   What Excites You About First Church’s Future?

The Mission Statement of First Church is printed on the first page of every Chimes and every worship bulletin. But there’s more! Did you know that we also have a Vision Statement that paints a picture of the church that we feel called to become? You can find it on the church’s website (type “vision” in the search box) or pick up a copy at the Information Desk. The Governing Board invites you to take a fresh look at these statements and share your thoughts and dreams about our next steps together. Here are three questions to consider: 1. What are we doing now that is most important to living into our mission and vision?

2. Where are we falling short?

3. What will make you excited to be a part of this church - so excited that you’re here on Sunday, involved in ministry, and talking about what’s going on here with your friends and family? Here are three ways to send your answers to these questions: 1. Fill out the card provided in the Sunday bulletin on August 4. 2. Answer the questions online at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/R36QF7F 3. Join the discussion at one of the Board’s listening sessions on Sunday, September 8 or 22 at 9:00 and 10:30 a.m. in the Chapel.

FUMC Governing Board Meeting Dates

The Board meets on the last Monday of each month from 7 – 8:30 p.m. in Room 214. All are invited to attend. Remaining dates for 2013 are:

One of the most important things I learned at the recent workshop on how to attract new people to First Church is the pastor should never eat lunch alone. That means your pastors should be out in the community every day eating lunch, meeting and talking with new people, establishing connections and creating a pastoral relationship. I need help with that. I need you to invite me to lunch with you and some of your co-workers, friends, family members and neighbors in a public setting. People who don’t think church has anything to do with them need to see the church in their normal, everyday settings doing normal, everyday things. I promise I won’t try to sell the church or “save” anyone at the table. The goal is to make connections with people who don’t go to church, who have dropped out of church or who don’t have any use for the church. As church people, followers of Jesus our Christ, we, like our Teacher, must go where people are. So, who’s up for lunch? Invite me please. Ask someone you know that I don’t and let’s go out for lunch. I’ll buy! Blessings,

Carly

Scenes from Vacation Bible School Mayor Contest

First Church has officially launched its Foursquare account online. Foursquare is available as an app for mobile devices. When you have this application installed on your mobile device you can use it to “check in” at businesses and locations you visit. The person who “checks in” most consistently becomes the “Mayor” of that location (until someone else “checks in” more frequently, then they become “Mayor”). Mayor-hood has no responsibilities; most people become mayor just for recognition on Foursquare. Many businesses offer special treatment to their Foursquare Mayor and we at First Church believe our Mayor deserves just as much respect. On Monday, September 2 the person declared Mayor will win one dozen freshly baked cookies from the FUMC Kitchen, which they will be able to claim, still warm from the oven, on Sunday, September 8 at 10:30 a.m. Worship. So, “check in” whenever you come to the church between now and September 1, and you could become the first Mayor of First Church! Good luck!

Help on Move In Day

True friends help us move. On Thursday, August 15, the big move in day for students and young adults in our downtown neighborhood, First Church wants to offer a hand in friendship. We would like to have a group of three to five people present on each block of our surrounding neighborhood ready to lend a hand carrying boxes, lifting couches, carrying televisions or whatever else the new resident might need. Volunteers for the church’s “moving crews” will meet in the Narthex at 8 a.m. From there, crews of three to five people will be assigned to a block in our neighborhood. When a crew sees a person moving in, they will offer their help. There is no need to sign up in advance. Just come to the church at 8 a.m. on August 15 ready to show how First Church can be a true friend to our neighbors.

ASP Training Workshop

Ken Bremer led a power tool session, overseeing construction of Aldo Leopold benches, which will be given as gifts to the families whose houses we work on. To practice visiting with the people we will meet in Kentucky, everyone broke off into small groups and visited with several of our elder members in the church. The youth cherished this time getting to know their older church family and gleaning their wisdom and memories of their life and the life of the church. The workshop ended with an Appalachian clogging lesson from Tricia Hillner, to give us some courage to get out on the dance floor.

Detroit Middle School Mission Trip

A group of 18 youth and adults ventured to Detroit to help clean up abandoned and neglected areas of the city to help make those neighborhoods a little safer and nicer for the remaining people who live there. Due to the lack of city finances, many of these neighborhoods are cut off from city services we take for granted. We were startled by what we saw when we got to Detroit: block after block of abandoned homes, factories left empty, businesses boarded up, all with an accompanying overgrowth of weeds and trash. As we went about our work cleaning up along the roadsides, sometimes people would get out and talk to us, offering support and asking how they too could get involved to “take their neighborhoods back.”
