Who Can Volunteer?

What We Do Members of First Church daily perform valued acts of caring, looking out for each other in our community. The Care Team Ministry responds to the non-medical quality of life needs of individuals and families associated with First United Methodist Church. Care Team members help their partners maintain a strong connection to the church. Care is provided on a continuing or short-term basis to people who are elderly, or who live alone, or who have a caregiver. The program has a very simple structure, supported by pastoral staff. It provides volunteer training and supervision. Team members receive a thorough orientation and ongoing training on topics such as communication, listening skills and spiritual sharing. Team members and the people they serve discover the joys of giving and receiving.

Anyone can become a Care Team member. The simple structure makes it easy to get involved and easy to stay involved. The ministry responds to individuals through a team approach, which provides for on-going support for each team member.

Care Team members make a commitment to calling, visiting and performing other activities within their comfort level based on their availability. Compatible interests with the person being served are also given consideration. Care Team members meet regularly to review their caring ministry partnerships. Through these team meetings, members provide each other with peer support. Team members are expected to participate in the orientation and training program. Jesus asked a second time,

“Simon son of John, do you love me?” Simon replied, “

Yes, Lord, you know I love you.” Jesus said to him,

“Take care of my sheep.”

John 21: 16 (Common English Bible)
