18.1 Description The heavy-duty polyester filter cartridge elements will show maximum longevity with proper care and maintenance. The life of your filter cartridge depends upon environment, use, and care. Here are some helpful hints to get the most life out of the cartridge.

18.2 Filter Replacement The two best indications of a "soiled" filter cartridge in need of a cleaning are an increase in the pressure read on the gauge on top of the filter canister, or a noticeable decrease in the system's water flow rate. Generally, an increase in pressure of 5-7 psi above the filter's original start-up pressure indicates a need to clean the cartridge. A decrease in pressure might be indicating that there is a tear in one of the pleats of the cartridge, and that cartridge should be removed and discarded. These procedures are valid only if the equipment is wired, plumbed, and set up according to the recommendations described in the Endless Pools Owner’s Manual, and in the “Endless Pools Installation Video.” They describe a “Clean and Clear” filter unit—look at the exploded diagrams later in this technical bulletin and the labels on the filter lid to confirm this is the filter unit you have. The procedures for removing a filter cartridge are as follows: 1) Disconnect power to the pump by turning off the circuit breaker or by unplugging the pump. 2) Isolate the water in the filter by closing the ball valves on either side of the filter (If the system is plumbed according to our specifications, one ball valve will be before the pump, and the other will be between the filter and the heater) 3) Attach a hose or hold a cup underneath the bibb valve (looks like a hose spigot). This bibb valve should be between the filter and one of the ball valves. 4) Open the bibb valve. Some water may come out, but probably not more than a cup. Air is not being allowed to enter the system, and therefore, the water won’t drain out well. 5) Open the air relief valve on top of the filter tank. Water should start flowing out of the bibb valve. Drain out 3-4 gallons, and then close the bibb valve. Leave the air relief valve open for the time being. 6) Remove the lock ring around the filter by depressing the safety catches on the underside of the lock ring and spinning the lock ring counter clockwise. 7) Pull the lid off the filter body. If it is possible, stand directly over the filter and pull straight up. 8) The top of the filter cartridge will be exposed. Protruding from the top of this will be the black dome of the filter’s center core. Lift the center core and filter element out of the filter tank, and remove the filter from the core by sliding it up and off of the core. 9) Reinstall a new or cleaned filter cartridge making sure the end of the filter marked “Bottom,” is in fact facing down. This would also be a good time to replace the Nature 2 cartridges if they have been in for six months—see Technical Bulletin #20 for more information. 10) Reinstall the center core making sure the arrow on top of the center core is in fact pointing toward the filter tank’s inlet (the side that is receiving the pipe coming off the top of the pump). Once the core is oriented properly it will seat into place. 11) Reinstall the filter canister’s lid making sure you press it firmly in place. This will make the installation of the lock ring easier. 12) Install the lock ring. It will make a solid “click” as the safety catches engage.

13) Close the air relief valve, open the ball valves, and turn on the pump. 14) Attach a hose or hold a cup in front of the spout on the air relief valve. Partially open this valve. Air should escape, making a “hissing” noise. Once water starts spraying out, all of the air has been purged from under the lid of the filter tank, and the air relief valve can be closed again.

18.3 Cleaning the Filter Cartridge Algae, suntan oil, and body oils can form a coating on the filter pleats that may not be thoroughly removed simply by hosing out the cartridge. Such a film of algae and/or oils will rapidly clog up the filters' pores, greatly reducing filtration. We recommend soaking the cartridge in a solution of commercially available filter element cleaner to remove algae and/or oils from the filter media. These cleaning agents can be obtained locally at a pool store, or through Endless Pools' Customer Service Department at (800) 910-2714. Follow the manufacturer's directions for the proper use of such cleaning solutions. A filter cartridge can be cleaned and re-used several times by following this procedure: 1) Hose off any visible debris with a garden hose by spraying from the inside out. This will wash the debris back out the way it came in, rather than forcing it through the cartridge. 2) Soak the cartridge in a five-gallon bucket filled with water and a filter element cleaner (follow the directions on the cleaner’s bottle for the recommended soaking time, etc.). 3) Hose off the cartridge by spraying from the inside of the cartridge to the outside. 4) Let the cartridge dry, and if it is possible, blow any embedded particulate from the inside out with an air compressor. A spare "stand-by" filter cartridge has been provided with your Endless Pool. A well maintained, clean cartridge assures you that your filter will always be ready to operate at peak efficiency.

18.4 Final Note The life of the filter cartridge is not indefinite. Occasional replacements will be necessary and they can be obtained locally or from Endless Pools Inc. .
