Enhanced Sucker Rod Design Improves Well Run Life Overview

Arc Resources, a major operator in Central Alberta had been having failure issues with a particular well since the initial installation of a sucker rod string. The well encountered numerous parted rod failures and tubing leaks. Alberta Oil Tool agreed to supply a new Norris rod guide design to the operator to prove how the Norris Grade D78 sucker rod is superior over the competitor’s product.

API Grade D Rod Fatigue Performance

• •

Arc Resources was experiencing sucker rod failures in a particular well, approximately one every five months. The well had a history of paraffin build up issues which caused an increase in sucker rod and peak polished rod loads, leading to a decrease in production. Ultimately creating additional wear on the equipment and adding to electrical costs. The well had minor traces of microbiologically induced corrosion in the produced fluid. Hot oiling of the well was also required to maintain a paraffin-free environment.

Alberta Oil Tool analyzed the system of the well and provided a detailed recommendation on the sucker rod and guiding for the rod string to ensure that all other equipment was operating efficiently. Arc Resources was provided with a Norris Grade D78 rod string for the corrosive conditions, utilizing Tornado guides at the top of the well for side loading and paraffin control. To control buckling and side loading, Straight Vane tapered guides and Tomahawk guides were installed. The rod string was a modified 76 taper (7/8”-3/4”7/8” rods) using 7/8” sucker rods above the pump for stabilization.

The operator has increased their strokes per minute in the well from 4.5 to 5.5. and increased production.

Well intervention or hot oil treatments have not been required in the well since the start of the new rod string install.

The rods were pulled on June 28, 2018. Results from the inspection revealed minimal wear on the guides, paraffin buildup was nonexistent, and the sucker rods were in excellent condition.
