elcome to Claremont! With our beautifully landscaped streets and being home to seven colleges, Claremont is often referred to as the “City of Trees and PhDs,” and it’s true. Claremont’s streets and neighborhoods are lined with beautiful deciduous and evergreen trees. It has been a winner of the National Arbor Day Association’s Tree City USA award for 23 consecutive years. Local citizens started what has since become a tree planting tradition when the city incorporated in 1907 and Claremont continues to be one of the most beautifully landscaped towns in California. The Claremont Colleges are a consortium of five undergraduate and two graduate schools of higher education. The Claremont Colleges campuses are adjoining and within walking distance of one another. The purpose of the consortium is to provide the specialization, flexibility and personal attention commonly found in a small college, with the resources of a large university. But as you will read in the following

pages, the town of Claremont is so much more than its famous trees and colleges. Ranked as the 5th most desirable town to live in the United States by a CNN/ Money Magazine article, Claremont offers a sophisticated mix of unique shopping and dining, blue ribbon senior living, big city culture and small town community involvement. It’s also a place where you can enjoy outdoor recreational opportunities, usually only found in remote wilderness area, without even leaving the town. Take a few minutes and learn a little about our town. We think you just might find what those of us who live here already know... that it’s hard to beat Claremont as the perfect place to live, work and play.

Claremont History L

ike a large portion of southern California, the history of the Claremont area is tied closely with the founding of the California Missions in the late 1700s. Father Junipero Serra founded Mission San Gabriel in 1771, the 4th mission in the California chain. At that time, the Serrano Indians and their ancestors lived in the foothill region below the San Gabriel Mountains. The Serranos belonged to the Shoshonean division of the Uto-Aztecan linguistic family, a diverse group that includes the Aztecs of Mexico, the Hopi, Papago and Pima of Arizona and the Ute of Colorado and Utah, the neighboring tribes of the Cahuilla, the Luseno, and the Copeno. The goal of the missions was to

become self-sufficient in relatively short order. Farming was the most important industry of any mission. Despite the complex and self sufficient culture the Serranos had developed, the missionaries believed the native people would benefit by being taught the Spanish style of agriculture, mechanical arts, and the raising and care of livestock. The missions, utilizing the labor of the neophytes, produced everything they used and consumed. In 1834, the Mexican government secularized the missions. The California lands were taken from the church and turned into private land-grant ranchos. Most of the Claremont area became part of the Rancho San Jose owned by Ricardo Vejar and Don

Ygnacio Palomares. Palomares’ sister built her adobe home in the center of what is now Memorial Park in Claremont. At first, the Serrano Indians worked for the early Spanish settlers. Smallpox outbreaks took heavy tolls among them and by 1881, many of the remaining Serranos moved further inland. Today many of their descendants live in Riverside County on the Morongo Indian Reservation. For the next several decades, the Claremont area existed peacefully in the looming shadow of the mighty San Gabriel Mountains. Almost without notice, a new citrus industry began to take hold. One of the first known orange orchards in California was planted

near Mission San Gabriel in 1804. The foothill area of Southern California (including Claremont) was the perfect location to grow oranges in. By the early 1900s, all of non-residential Claremont was under cultivation in citrus crops. With its close proximity to the nearby Santa Fe railroad line, Claremont soon became an important hub for California’s burgeoning citrus industry. At its height, four citrus packing houses, an ice house and a pre-cooling plant were all located within Claremont. Paralleling the growth of Claremont’s citrus industry, was the beginning of it being a center of higher education. In the nearby town of Pomona, a group of Congregationalists wanted to recreate, on the West Coast, “a college of the New England type,” that would represent the very best of what they had experienced as students in the finest colleges of the Eastern and Midwestern United States. The academic group founded Pomona College and instruction began in 1888.

The first classes were taught in a small rented house in the city of Pomona, but by the following January, an unfinished hotel in Claremont along with adjacent land was given to the College which relocated there. Despite its new location, the name “Pomona College” stuck. The college awarded its first diplomas to the Class of 1894. With the freedom characteristic of colleges founded in the Congregationalist tradition, Pomona was soon entrusted with its own governing board. Today the College stands as an independent college, with no sectarian affiliation. By the mid-1920s, the growth of the College presented its leaders with the difficult choice of limiting its expansion to retain its unique character or allow growth to transform it into a university. Guided by President James A. Blaisdell, Pomona chose a third path. Using Oxford and Cambridge as a model, Pomona led the way in founding a consortium of institutions unlike any other in America. Over the next 75 years, two graduate schools and four other

undergraduate colleges joined Pomona as members of The Claremont Colleges consortium and located on neighboring campuses and allowing cross-registration and sharing important facilities such as libraries. Today, Pomona College is ranked fourth out of all liberal arts colleges by U.S. News & World Report and eighth out of all undergraduate colleges and universities in the USA by

Forbes. It is the most endowed liberal arts college in the country on a per capita basis, the fourth most endowed school on a per capita basis, and the second most selective liberal arts college based on acceptance rate. The community that grew up around the college also reflected the founders’ New England heritage. Even the form of local government they used, the Town Meeting, was brought from their hometowns in the East. The citizen involvement and volunteerism on which the town meeting form of government is based continue to be hallmarks of Claremont today. After World War II, Southern California and Claremont experienced a boom with rapid growth, urban sprawl and small towns becoming suburbs. Land values skyrocketed and pressure on the town of Claremont to develop along this line was great. The completion of the San Bernardino Freeway in 1954 made it possible for people not connected with citrus

ranching or the colleges to live in Claremont. In 1924, Claremont appointed its first planning commission. The strength of this commission and the 1944 postwar planning committee not only helped prepare Claremont for the postwar boom but also placed it in a strong position to accept the kind of growth it wanted and to reject the kind of growth that might seriously damage the character of the community. Today, the early Spanish, college, and citrus industry influences can be seen in the Claremont community. There are beautiful remnants of citrus and oak groves and a physical character reminiscent of Claremont’s Spanish heritage and college-town influence. Many fine representatives of various architectural periods, particularly Victorian, neo-Classical Revival Craftsman, and Spanish Colonial Revival can still be seen today. This diversity, sense of scale, and continuity singles Claremont out as a unique community in Southern California.

ince 1922, the Claremont Chamber of Commerce has been playing a major leadership role in shaping the economic and social growth of the city. Through the years, the Chamber has developed unique and innovative partnerships between the city’s business, civic and residential communities, all designed to develop and maintain a strong safe and viable city. The Chamber also coordinates several of Claremont’s major community events and recognizes the outstanding achievements in business by presenting prestigious annual awards. Claremont welcomes new businesses and has a fond appreciation for those businesses already located within the City. In addition, the Claremont 10 • Business & Community DireCtory

Chamber of Commerce is dedicated to supporting and enhancing the prosperity, civic vitality, and general well-being of the business community, as well as individual residents. Claremont’s Economic Development

team, which is comprised of City staff and consultants, assists the business community and the future development of the City by providing a variety of services and programs. These include active business retention programs, funding visitor promotional activities provided by the Chamber of Commerce, small business assistance programs, and a wide range of housing-related programs. The mission of the Economic Development team is to encourage a healthy economic base in the community by enhancing current commercial/industrial operations and facilitating new development. The Team also strives to provide housing opportunities for persons and families at all income levels.

Shopping, Dining, Entertainment & Recreation T

here’s no shortage of things to do in the community of Claremont. Some of the best shopping, dining, music and nightlife in Los Angeles County can be found here. And some say Claremont is second to none when it comes to outdoor recreation in an urban setting. The Claremont Village is the heart and soul of Claremont’s retail area. Located just west of the Claremont Colleges, its a quaint collection of almost 200 street front shops, art galleries, boutiques, restaurants and much more. The Village offers a selection of goods and services that rivals much larger shopping centers with dozens of unique shops not found elsewhere. In addition to The Village, Claremont offers unique shops in 11 other shopping centers around town. A weekly farmer’s market, live music, art walks, history walks, and wine walks are just a few events on the

list of things to do. The Claremont Village is not just the commercial center of town, but the cultural and social centers as well. Residents and visitors enjoy the small town feel of the Village, where they can sit and relax, visit with

neighbors and meet new friends. A parking garage provides easy access to the Village and shop owners pride themselves on providing their guests with an experience that will ensure their quick return.

Looking for fun after the sun goes down? Claremont’s growing list of nightspots range from quiet wine bars, a microbrewery and outdoor lounges accented by designer fire pits. Claremont has several entertainment venues such as a dinner theater, a Las Vegas-style piano bar, a comedy club, live music and performances at many restaurants and bars. Musical entertainment never falls short in Claremont. The City of Claremont provides the extremely popular (and free)

Monday nights Concerts in the Park program during July and August, drawing upwards of 5,000 people The Summer Concerts appeal to a wide audience and offer diverse music from Country to Reggae to Classic Rock. The Claremont Kiwanis Club offers a variety of concessions, from burgers, hot dogs and quesadillas, ice cream, popcorn, nachos, candy and drinks. Another popular music event is the Friday Nights Live in the Village every Friday night

from May through October. This event is sponsored by the Claremont Chamber of Commerce. The City of Claremont also offers many family-oriented events, such as Family Movie nights, 4th of July celebration, Halloween Spooktacular and the Holiday Promenade and Tree Lighting. The Chamber of Commerce hosts the Village Venture Arts & Crafts Faire every October, which has become the largest Arts & Crafts Faire in the Inland Empire.

Just north of the city is a recreational area that is perhaps unrivaled in any urban setting. The Claremont Hills Wilderness Park opened in 1996 with 1,440 acres and recent additions have increased its size to 1,620 acres of open space. Park elevation varies from 1,800 to 3,000 feet. Primarily a wilderness preserve with rugged and challenging terrain. A system of fire roads for hiking biking, walking leashed dogs, and horseback riding. A wide variety of native flora and fauna can be found throughout the Park. It is an island of peace and serenity just minutes away from Claremont’s downtown. The Thompson Creek Trail lies on the northern end of the city. The trail stays close to the Thompson Creek channel as it winds its way through the San Gabriel Mountains foothills. The paved trail is popular with walkers, runners, bicyclists and leashed dogs. The native vegetation that grows alongside the trail adds to the feeling of wilderness. The

moderate 2.8-mile trail is accessible from many points along its route. Claremont is a bicycle-friendly city, providing safe routes and an infrastructure for highly enjoyable rides around the Village or into the neighboring communities. For mountain bikers, there are numerous trails and degrees of challenges, starting right inside Claremont at the foothills or deeper in the Angeles forest. Just twelve miles from the Claremont Village is Mt. Baldy recreation area. The area is one of the largest developed ski/snowboarding areas in Southern California offering a variety of terrain that will challenge beginners to experts. During the summer months, the area has a multitude of hiking trails that traverse the San Gabriel Mountains. The hike to the top of Mt. Baldy peak rewards hikers with some of the most incredible vistas anywhere, including Catalina Island on a clear day. Claremont area residents do not need to travel to the big city for first class entertainment and shopping opportunities. Some of the best Southern California has to offer is found right here in their own hometown.

Perhaps one of the best kept secrets about the small community nested at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains is the world class services that the town of Claremont and other agencies and organizations provide for its senior community. The Claremont area offers everything from A to Z for its seniors. From first class medical facilities to recreational opportunities, there is no shortage of services and activities for seniors living in Claremont. Need to get to the doctor, do some shopping and then maybe grab a bite to eat but don’t have a car? Claremont seniors can choose from several different options to get around. The popular Get About program is a special service providing transportation for the elderly and disabled persons. Get About offers door-to-door transportation with wheelchair accessible vehicles. The service is available to all persons 60 years and over and disabled

persons of all age. The cost is $1 per ride and multi-ride tickets make the cost even less. Get About offers direct service to and from anywhere in the four cities of Claremont, La Verne, Pomona, and San Dimas. Service is also available directly to Montclair Plaza, Doctor’s Hospital in Montclair and locations in

Covina and Glendora. Get About also serves Cal-Poly Pomona and Mount San Antonio College. Transfer connections can be made to Metropolitan Transit Authority, Foothill Transit, Omnitrans Access and the Glendora Mini-bus Service. The Claremont community also offers a Dial-A-Ride service to seniors

and the public, as well as a Community Connections Volunteer Driver Program where door-to-door assisted transportation for seniors and individuals with disabilities, is provided through a volunteer driver program. The free Claremont Avenues for Lifelong Learning (CALL) program is designed to permit those 60 years of age and older an opportunity to audit courses at the Claremont Colleges. Classes are filled on a first-come, first-serve basis, with priority given to Claremont residents. Over 70 different classes are offered through this program by the Claremont Colleges in the fall and spring. The Claremont Senior Program offers a variety of volunteer opportunities. Some programs include: Nutrition Volunteers which help with providing senior meals Monday through Friday at the Joslyn and Blaisdell Senior Centers. Volunteers can also become instructors and group leaders for a number of different classes offered at the senior centers. Other opportunities include helping with the marketing and sales of beautiful handmade gifts in the Joslyn Boutique, and the Phone Assurance Line Callers (PAL). PAL volunteers call isolated senior citizens on a daily basis. The Joslyn Senior Center is also host to the Claremont Senior Computer Club and AAPR free tax services. Seniors in Claremont have a multitude of places they can choose to call home. From affordable single unit housing to economical multi-family units, the town has housing to meet every senior’s needs. There are more than 30 independent living, senior apartments and retirement communities in the Claremont area. Senior living at its best can be found in the small and friendly community of Claremont. laremont’s public school system is excellent and among the most highly rated in California. The Claremont Unified School District serves about 6,900 students with seven elementary schools, one intermediate school, one high school, one continuation school, one orthopedically handicapped school, and one adult school. Though elementary schools have been developed to serve neighborhood areas, an open enrollment plan allows selection of school by preference as well. CUSD and the Claremont Chamber of Commerce work in partnership on several educational projects including Best B.E.T. (Business and Education Together) and the annual Educational Golf Classic. Claremont Lincoln University Claremont Lincoln is a new non-profit Keck Graduate Institute of Applied graduate school in Southern California that educates ethical leaders to reach Life Sciences Found in 1997, KGI is the only across cultural, political, economic and American graduate school created religious boundaries exclusively for the leaders of the life sciences industry.
