Open Compute Project - System Firmware Project Charter

Overview Create and deploy, at scale, an open source hardware platform initialization and OS load firmware optimized for web-scale cloud hardware, including documentation, testing, integration and any other artifacts that aid the development, deployment, operation or adoption of the open source project. Successful projects delivered by this project will: ● Remove redundant effort required by other projects to create their own solutions ● Provide hardware and software bootloader & initialization implementations ● Provide flexible solutions that will work across different types of IT equipment. ● Provide flexible solutions that work for different company requirements ● Create portable system firmware components ● Improve security across the entire cloud computing industry through open standards

In-Scope Activities ● ● ● ● ●

Supports all processor architectures found in the web-scale data center. Support for cloud operating systems Support for compute (GP & AI/ML/FPGA), storage, & network devices. Development and deployment tools Security features

Out of Scope Activities The following areas will be out of scope of the open System Firmware Project: ● Runtime utilities that are out of the boot path should not be mandatory ● Development of proprietary/closed software ● Support for proprietary infrastructure. ● Non-technical issues related to productization.
