Chicago’s Rose blasts Pacers By CLIFF BRUNT AP Sports Writer

INDIANAPOLIS — Derrick Rose figured the only way to get over the Charlotte loss was to take care of Indiana. NBA The Chicago guard Bulls . . . . . . . . 99 point Pacers . . . . . . . 86 needed to shake off his poor shooting and his team’s poor defensive effort against the Bobcats, and he responded with 29 points and 10 rebounds in a 99-86 win over the

Pacers on Friday night. Chicago led Charlotte 80-75 with eight minutes to go on Wednesday night before falling apart defensively in the closing minutes. Rose was focused on creating a different outcome against Indiana. “I couldn’t wait to play,” Rose said. “We let that one slip because of our defense. Tonight, we made sure that we played with a lot of intensity at the beginning of the game and made sure that we played defense.” The Bulls held the Pacers to 33

percent shooting as Rose scored 20 points in the second half against Indiana. “In the second half, when he’s going like he’s going, it doesn’t matter what you do on a pickand-roll,” Indiana coach Jim O’Brien said. “That’s why people think that he’s an MVP candidate.” Danny Granger scored 22 points for the Pacers, but he shot 4for-17 in the first three quarters when the game was in doubt while being guarded primarily by Deng.

Jet coach hurling superlatives From Wire Services

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — As if this thing needed more hype. Rex Ryan said this about the New England SPORTS Patriots during NOTEBOOK his final news conference before Sunday’s AFC divisional playoff: —The Jets respected them but didn’t fear them; —The game ranks right behind the Broadway Joe Super Bowl win in 1969; —And, yes, the Jets would win. “I think it’ll be huge,” the coach said Friday. “This one will probably be the second-biggest in the history of the franchise.” Following a ho-hum week of

name-calling, accusations and challenges, New York is looking to get past the Patriots and reach the AFC championship game for the second straight season.

Khyle Marshall added 16 points for the Bulldogs (13-5, 5-1), who are tied with Valparaiso atop the Horizon League standings.

Tatupu’s status still unclear RENTON, Wash. — Linebacker Lofa Tatupu participated in Seattle’s practice Friday, the Seahawks’ last workout before they left for Chicago. Tatupu, however, still must be cleared by doctors to play after leaving last week’s game against New Orleans with a concussion.

Fairley entering NFL Draft MOBILE, Ala. — Nick Fairley, Auburn’s other big-name star, also is heading to the NFL after winning the Lombardi Award and helping Cam Newton lead the Tigers to a national title. The potential No. 1 overall pick announced his decision Friday at his old high school, saying he didn’t make up his mind until that morning after long talks with his coaches and his parents and a solitary drive around his hometown.

Butler busts Detroit DETROIT — Matt Howard scored 17 points and Butler shot 57 percent Friday night in whipping Detroit 87-64.

Bowhunter deserves accolades

Chuck Adams — a name synonymous with bowhunting. Awards; he’s won them. World records; he’s broke them. A legend; he has become one. The Professional Outdoor Media Association (POMA) and Archery Trade Association (ATA) recently honored Adams as the recipient of the prestigious POMA/ATA Fred Bear Archery and Bowhunting Communicator Award. The presentation took place during the ATA Trade Show in Indianapolis. Adams is the third communicator to receive this prestigious award, joining fellow archery legends Jim Dougherty and Dwight Schuh. The award recognizes outdoor communicators who embody the spirit of Fred Bear. Award honorees are bowhunter journalists who, like Bear, defend the heritage and future of archery and bowhunting at work, at home and through his or her lifestyle. Most who know Adams recognize him for his expertise as a book author and columnist in numerous bowhunting publications. What makes his writing so impressive though, is what he’s done to back it up. Adams is arguably

Jeeps

(Concluded from Page 25) eight-point, five-steal outing. Friedman was pleased his team executed with comfort in the second half when the Jeeps oscillated to a halfcourt-style game after Paoli hung with the Jeeps early when they tried to press and push the pace. Aaron Key paced the Rams with 12 points, with Clay

DRIFTWOOD OUTDOORS

By Brandon Butler the most accomplished bowhunter in the world. He was the first bowhunter to take all of the North American big game species recognized by the Pope & Young Club. A feat known as the “Super Slam.” He has more official Pope &Young record book entries than any other bowhunter in history, including former and current world records for Yellowstone elk and mountain caribou. “I just want to thank ATA and POMA for this prestigious award,” Adams said. “Bowhunting is my passion and my life; and I do it because I love it. Fortunately, I was able to combine the two things I think I do best, which are writing and hunting, into a career that has kept a smile on my face for a long, long time. And I plan to keep smiling for a long time as I continue to bowhunt. Thank you again for this high honor, I really do appreciate it.” Those of us who know Chuck, both personally and professionally, appreciate his contributions to our craft as outdoor communicators. To accomplish what Adams has achieved can only be done with a lifetime dedication. “Through a professional journalism career spanning more than two decades, and an even longer personal bowhunting ca-

reer, he has distinguished himself as being among the elite in both. The Fred Bear Archery and Bowhunting Communicator Award is an acknowledgment of how Chuck has remained relevant even in today’s diverse media environs. Chuck’s accomplishments particularly stand out because unlike those whose personal goal is to achieve notoriety, he has achieved notoriety for accomplishing his personal goals,” said fellow journalist and POMA Board Member Bob Humphrey. Jay McAninch, president and CEO of the Archery Trade Association presented Adams with the award, a bronzed representation of Fred Bear’s hat. “Chuck is one of those guys that is synonymous with bowhunting. He has brought the (archery) message to everybody and has had time for everybody. The thing that I like is he’s not the type of guy that everybody remembers from the autographed pictures, but he’s the guy in the magazine, and we remember what he said in that magazine, or that book. That’s Chuck, and that’s his legacy.” See you down the trail . . .
