Community Presbyterian Church Church Information Form October 20, 2015 Introduction The Ministerial Vocation Committee and the Office of the Stated Clerk of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church are responsible for denominational vocational services. As part of the process of “matching” ministers and congregations, the Office of the Stated Clerk provides resources and advice to both pastors and congregational search committees. To that end, we ask congregations and ministers to complete information forms as an introduction to each other, and a first step in the process of calling a minister for a congregation. For both the individual pastor and the congregation, this is an opportunity for self-study and for evaluation of current ministry and goals. This calls for honesty, effort, and commitment to open communication. The Church Information Form presents the local congregation’s history, challenges, and goals. It is our hope that this will be of help in facilitating the search process, assisting the church in focusing on future directions, and pastors in gaining some sense of the nature and uniqueness of this congregation.

15. In what ways does your church participate in ecumenical activities? Community Presbyterian Church is committed to contribute to the health and growth of all churches in the San Ramon Valley. Our Senior Pastor meets regularly with the other pastors in the San Ramon Valley for prayer and personal support. In the past CPC has loaned worship leaders and preaching pastors to churches in transition. Each of the CPC pastoral staff heads has as one of their responsibilities to network with and help the other churches in the SRV. In addition, CPC members and pastors actively support the health and growth of the EPC both in the Presbytery of the Pacific and at the national level. Community Presbyterian Church participates in a diverse set of ecumenical activities that span age groups, ministries, and geographies. The church co-sponsors 59 local and international missionaries mission partners who evangelize throughout the world. CPC actively supports church members’ shortterm international mission trips to build wells, develop in-country youth and VBS programs, provide medical and dental care, advance education, and assist in the development of micro businesses. Members have consistently provided direct ministry support in Ethiopia, Uganda, Macedonia, Mexico, China, Tajikistan, and Bulgaria. The high school youth program goes on a yearly trip to Mexico to support AMOR ministries by building houses for the disadvantaged. Local mission partners includes organizations like the Bay Area Rescue Mission, City Team, City Impact, Prison Ministry, Young Life, Shepherds Gate, Today’s Youth Matter, and the community LendA-Hand programs. Twenty-two AA meetings occur on CPC’s campus per week, and BSF and the Boy Scouts use CPC’s facilitates for their meetings. CPC members created the Job Connections ministry, which has grown to provide regional help to the community at large, matching employers with those seeking employment. CPC’s pastors are actively involved with these ministries and participate with the leadership of other valley churches to promote the health and growth of their comparable ministries. 16. Describe the strengths of your congregation: The strength of CPC is in its people. CPC is blessed to have a strong Pastoral and Ministry team, supported by nearly 1000 key people from our congregation (we call it our CORE), who contribute their time and talents to help people fulfill our purpose of "People Meeting Christ and Living as His Disciples." This is a unified body of believers, diverse in composition and breadth of service in our ministries. People of all ages are engaged and serving in our various ministry offerings, from our Preschool and Academy (K-8th grade), to Prime Time for seasoned citizens. Our programs are supported with biblical teaching, discipleship, and opportunities to share the gospel. Our Women's Bible Studies, Men's Fraternity, Small Groups, and vibrant Youth and Children's ministries are thriving, as they are led by leaders who are guided by the Holy Spirit and invested in spiritual growth and outreach. Many more serve as the hands and feet of Jesus to care for our congregation as Stephen's Ministers, Deacons, Prayer Warriors, or on other teams to fully support our ministries in any way possible. 17. List specific problems with which your congregation struggles: The CPC Session recently completed an analysis of our church demographics and a read a series of books on society’s views of Christianity. CPC like many other churches has a disproportionate representation of older members and faces a demographic cliff as our older saints “move on”. This factor plus the fact our society has become hostile to and holds a negative view of Christianity makes it essential that CPC focus on reaching out to young families and students so that they may understand that Christ cares for them and CPC wants them to be included in our church family. CPC is blessed to be located in an affluent community, yet this affluence has the potential for promoting complacency in supporting the needs of those less fortunate. The church has been purposeful in trying to

impact the percentage of people who confess Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior through programs like the Valley Vision, yet it has experienced a leveling of its membership and impact. To address this, CPC has congregational endorsement for our vision 2020 which includes specific prayer and leadership to become: A Life Transforming Church, A Gospel Sharing Church, A Compassionate Church, A Generous Church, and An Intergenerational Church. 18. List major goals that this congregation has set for itself: CPC’s major goals are summed up in our vision 2020 prayer “Lord, by 2020 may CPC be a transformed, inter-generational, community passionate about living as Christ’s disciples with a contagious zeal for people meeting Christ and radically expressing God’s compassion and generosity.” 19. Has there ever been disciplinary action taken against a pastor of your congregation? Yes

No

20. Has there ever been any disciplinary action against an elder or deacon of your congregation? Yes

No

If you answered “Yes” to either 19 or 20, please explain: Question 19: In 1991, the Senior Pastor demitted his ordination and left the church when the facts of his non-Christian behavior became known to leaders of the church. Question 19 In 2004, our Minster of Worship was dismissed and placed under CPC disciplinary support. 21. Have you completed a mission statement, vision statement and/or a strategic plan for your congregation? Yes No In April 2012, CPC launched 2020 vision to significantly grow in the following areas and be known as: A Life Transforming Church, A Gospel Sharing Church, A Compassionate Church, A Generous Church and An Intergenerational Church. If yes, please attach copies.

Part V: Church History (please limit to one page) A.

What have been the three most important events in the history of your church?

CPC is a church with a 150 plus year history of evangelical leadership in the San Ramon Valley. Blessed with stable visionary leadership from the Reverend Orville Schick for nearly 25 years and Reverend Scott Farmer for the last twenty three years, God has used CPC as a stable foundation in the San Ramon Valley as it has grown from a rural farming area to a multi-cultural suburb. During Orville’s tenure CPC experienced consistent growth, built a 700 hundred seat sanctuary, started a preschool and the San Ramon Valley Christian Academy. During Scott’s tenure, CPC has developed a focus on prayer, Biblical literacy, and practical demonstrations of Christ’s love both in the bay area and internationally. This consistent leadership, focused on serving the needs of the valley and world, has preserved CPC’s heritage while expanding its impact beyond the immediate area. Over the last several years, CPC has served as a unifying presence in the San Ramon Valley. CPC’s passion for reaching the community for Christ is epitomized in its commitment to the Valley Vision. This is an intentional collaboration among twenty-two churches with the goal to increase the percentage of active Christians in the San Ramon Valley. In support of this vision and CPC’s purpose for People Meeting Christ, CPC planted a sister church (SRPC), created multiple worship venues on our campus, launched the Imagine capital Campaign to accommodate a growing demand on our facilities and created the People Meeting Christ Foundation to support future expansion. A further impact on the valley has come from the expansion of the CPC Christian academy (SRVCA) where the student body has doubled, the preschool (CPP) which has seen significant growth and the CPC Counseling Center (CPCC) which has expanded both its scope, adding a focus on sexual addiction, and the number of clients serviced each year. Since the establishment of Vision 2020 the accelerated outward focus of CPC is transforming the way our members view their role as the body of Christ. It is manifested through individuals being motivated to pay their blessings forward to others in tangible ways. Some examples include outreach to the City of Richmond (an economically disadvantaged area 30 miles from CPC) and a 10 year undertaking with Hope Enterprises to develop water, hygiene and education to a remote village in Sintaro in Ethiopia. These are some of the more recent expressions of how CPC members are living out the life of Christ by generously sharing the love they have graciously received. B. What has been the most interesting and challenging event in the life of your church in the last three years? CPC’s transition from PCUSA to the EPC has empowered the church to affirm who we are, clarified our vision, and energized our members. After much prayer and research by the pastors and elders, in February 2010, they unanimously recommended to the congregation that we seek dismissal from the San Francisco Presbytery and the PCUSA in order to affiliate with the Evangelical Presbyterian Church. Following seven months of Town Hall meetings, seminars on theology and missions, and after much personal and corporate prayer, the congregation voted overwhelmingly to seek dismissal in September. In November of 2010, the San Francisco Presbytery voted, by a margin of four to one, to bless our request. While awaiting full implementation of our transition, due to legislative challenges with the PCUSA which lasted until June 2012, the leadership of CPC sought God’s heart and mind for a fresh strategic vision to align with our new affiliation. CPC has come through this transition with a renewed and united sense of the mission and heart of the church as represented by our Vision for 2020: “By 2020, CPC is a transformed, intergenerational
