Sweet Yorkie Mix Available for Adoption

My husband and I live in Willowlake and foster for Yorkie & Small Dog Rescue (a non-profit organization). We are currently fostering Ace, who was a stray rescued from the Harris County Shelter. We are trying to find him a “forever” home where he will get lots of love and attention. Ace is a very sweet, trusting, and happy boy who loves to give kisses and have his tummy rubbed! He also has LOTS of energy! He is 7 years young and weighs around 10 lbs. Ace was recently neutered, had his dental, is up to date on shots, micro chipped, and 95% housetrained.  If you would like more information on adopting Ace, please contact Rita McKenzie at (713) 3041198 or [email protected]. As you know, each year the Yard of the Month Committee chooses four different families who have done an exceptional job decorating their homes. Each family receives a $25 gift card to a local restaurant and a yard sign posted prominantly in their front yard that reflects the category they have won. Like years past, this year was really competitive and made it more difficult than ever to choose the different category winners. And the winners are...  Winter Wonderland 9506 Bending Willow - Complete with all white lights, an igloo and polar bear (to name a few) Kelly Wuthrich and his fiance Brenda Swinford did a great job in bringing in the spirit of Winter Wonderland. Having moved recently from Willobridge, the soon to be Wuthrich family, have two children Nicholas (11) and Gavin (4) and love to live in Willowlake because of the well maintained neighborhood and access to beltway 8 along with the Cy-Fair Schools. Holiday Magic 9702 Winter Run - Robert and Kelly Ledet along with their two children Shawn (10) and Rachel (7) did a great job decorating their corner lot home in green and white lights. When all the lights were lit, you could see a glow from over the horizon and just knew they would have to get an award. This house is one the “Griswalds” would have to be proud of! Spirit of the Season 9531 Willow Lake - What a great job Donna and Ron Barrow did with this house. Donna credits Ron for starting as early as NOVEMBER and ever so delicately placing each and every bulb.

In fact, Ron himself made the 100 light bulb crosses that hung from around the house. Donna and Ron have two children Jennifer (24) and Stephanie (29) and have lived in the neighborhood for 12 years. Santa’s Favorite 9518 Hanging Moss Lawn orniments, lawn orniments and more lawn orniments complete with a farris wheel and OL’ Frosty riding a motorcycle. Ana and Jose Portillo with their two children Joselyn (15) and Anthony (8) moved to Willowlake 5 years ago from New York and love the quiet neighborhood. You can’t help but drive by their home and get a real feel for the season. This year’s Honorable Mention list is longer than last year. Our neighbors did a great job decorating their homes and we can’t forget the Honorable Mentions. 9602 Leaning Tree 9923 Golden Glade 9703 Trailing Moss 9531 Bending Willow 9622 Bending Willow 9635 Bending Willow Dont’ forget, the Yard of the Month winners will start back up in March. On a personnal note, Rita and I are very proud to be the Yard of the Month committee members but are always looking for some other participants. If you’re interested please call or email. Thank you all and have a happy holiday Rita and Scott McKenzie 9522 Leaning Tree 832 444 1964 [email protected]  [email protected]

Willowlake Keep Warm, but Safe

December, January and February are the deadliest months for home fires, according to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). And, heating equipment is the second leading cause of home fires and home fire deaths. That’s why it’s important for you and your loved ones to take extra precautions during the winter. Thinking of buying a space heater? The NFPA recommends that you make sure it carries the mark of an independent testing laboratory. Install it according

to the manufacturer’s instructions or have it professionally installed. If you have an electric-powered space heater, plug it into an outlet with sufficient capacity. Never use an extension cord. The association does not allow liquid-fueled space heaters. Turn off space heaters whenever the room is unoccupied or when manufacturer’s instructions say they should be turned off. Portable space heaters are easy to knock over in the dark. Turn them off when you go to bed, or at least make sure they’re placed in lighted areas or out of high-traffic areas. If you use a fireplace or wood stove, use only dry, seasoned wood to avoid the buildup of creosote, an oily deposit that easily catches fire and accounts for most chimney fires and the largest share of home-heating fires. Use only paper or kindling wood, not a flammable liquid, to start the fire. Do not use artificial logs in wood stoves. Make sure your fireplace has a sturdy

screen to prevent sparks from flying into the room. After the ashes are cool, dispose of them in a metal container, which is kept a safe distance from your home. Make sure fuel-burning equipment is vented to the outside, that the venting is kept clear and unobstructed, and that the exit point is properly sealed around the vent. This is to make sure deadly carbon monoxide does not build up in the home Other reminders from the National Fire Protection Association include: • Don’t use your oven to heat your home. • Inspect all heating equipment annually, and clean as necessary. • Test smoke alarms monthly; install a carbon monoxide alarm outside each sleeping area. Willowlake SAFETY AT HOME

LOCK YOUR DOORS AND WINDOWS when you are at home. Too often, criminals get into homes through unlocked doors and windows. A PEEPHOLE WITH AN 180 DEGREE viewing angle is excellent for you to verify who is on the other side of your door. Never open your door to anyone you do not know. ALWAYS ACKNOWLDEDGE A CALLER AT YOUR DOOR, to determine who they are and what they want. Some burglars ring the doorbell, and if there is no answer, they break in. You do not want that type of surprise company! ALWAYS VERIFY BY THE TELEPHONE that the person works for the company they say they represent and has been sent for the reason stated. EXTERIOR LIGHTING provides additional protection from intruders. Inexpensive timers or photoelectric cells will automatically turn lights on and off at dusk and dawn. WATCH YOUR NEIGHBOR’S home and your neighborhood and have your neighbors help watch your home. Please support the businesses that advertise in your newsletter. Their advertising dollars make it possible to provide your newsletter to all the residents in your subdivision at no charge. No homeowners association dollars were used to produce this newsletter.
