Cruise n’ Blues Festival

Welcome to the inaugural issue of the community newsletter for Hill Country Estates HOA and Westview Estates NA! Your association officers want to thank PEEL Inc. for making this monthly newsletter possible, and we hope that you enjoy reading it. We further hope that you’ll help make our newsletter interesting and informative. We welcome your submissions of community news articles, neighborhood committee reports, notices for upcoming events, and anything else you think your neighbors would enjoy knowing about. Send your ideas and newsletter items to either the Westview editor (Kevin Good) or the HCE editor (Charlsa Bentley). Thanks, neighbors!

The third annual Cruise n’ Blues Festival will be held on Saturday, October 21, from noon to 6 pm at the Southwest Hills Community Church on Highway 71, just west of the Oak Hill Y. The festival, a joint project of the Oak Hill Association of Neighborhoods (OHAN), Oak Hill Business and Professional Association (OHBPA) and the Oak Hill Rotary is a community-building event and an opportunity for residents of Oak Hill to join together in a day of music and fun for all ages. When looking for a way to bring Oak Hill together and establish more of an identity and pride for southwest Austin three years ago, the Oak Hill Association of Neighborhoods focused on the long-time gathering of custom cars and hotrods at the Y on Saturdays. “It was just a natural focus point”, says Bruce Perrin, President of OHAN. OHBPA and Oak Hill Rotary joined in to further increase community involvement. Last year’s Cruise n’ Blues Festival had more than 50 customized and classic cars on display. While the cars are an attraction for kids of all ages, there will be activities for children as well as vendor booths highlighting local businesses, artists, craftsmen, and community organizations and services. Four Austin bands will provide musical entertainment for the event. Beginning the day will be the Kelly Doze Band, followed by Purple Room. Next on the bill is the Texcellerators, and the headliners will be the Leghounds. These bands will get the crowd moving with a mix of blues, classic rock, and toe-tapping music. Entry to the event is free. Capitol Metro will provide free shuttle service to the festival from the ACC Pinnacle Campus on Highway 290, as there will be no public parking at the site. Information and applications for vendor booths can be found at www.ohan.org. Major sponsors for the Festival include AMD and Capitol Metro. Come join your neighbors at the Cruise n’ Blues Festival and find out more about what’s available here in Oak Hill. You are sure to have a good time!

Why are we doing a joint newsletter? Hill Country Estates is located on the southwest side of Hwy. 71, just southeast of its intersection with Thomas Springs Road. There are 86 houses in HCE. Westview Estates is located on the north side of Hwy. 290; it extends from the Scenic Hills Baptist Church on Mowinkle (just off Circle Drive) up Circle Drive to Pitter Pat Lane and north to Claxton. (See map below.) There are about 175 houses in Westview. Our two subdivisions have much in common. We are both voting members in the Oak Hill Association of Neighborhoods (OHAN). We both have neighborhood associations in which membership is voluntary. Most of our lots are fairly large (1 acre or more). We are outside the city limits of Austin but inside the Extra Territorial Jurisdiction (ETJ). We are in the Austin Independent School District, and our students attend the same public schools (Oak Hill Elementary School, Small Middle School, and Bowie High School). Our subdivisions back up to each other along and to the southeast of the Midwood Parkway/Pitter Pat Lane line. For years now, our subdivisions have each desired to have a regular neighborhood newsletter. PEEL Inc. provides neighborhood newsletter service free to residents of subdivisions with 200+ houses. Voila! Welcome to the Hill Country Estates HOA & Westview Estates NA Community Newsletter, published by PEEL Inc.!

Hill Country Estates/Westview Estates HCE HAPPENINGS October Fall Picnic Beak and Marlene Warner are inviting all HCE residents (adults and children) to their house for “A Fall Picnic” on Saturday October 28th starting at 6:30 p.m. All you need to bring is a pot-luck dish to share with the other picnic’ers, a blanket or chairs to sit on, and your own drinks. Beak and Marlene will provide plates, silverware, napkins, glasses, a limited number of tables and chairs, a pan of Marlene’s fabulous pulled pork, and a gorgeous backyard setting in which we can all enjoy the good food and company. No need to RSVP; just show up at the Warners house (7001 Midwood Parkway) with your dish, drinks, and blanket/chairs. Many thanks, Beak and Marlene! We can’t wait!!! Christmas Lights Competition Everyone loves driving around neighborhoods at Christmas-time to see the creative and inventive ways people decorate their houses and yards! This year, to support and encourage you to “light up our world”, the HCEHOA is sponsoring a competition for the best outdoor Christmas decorations in our neighborhood. Your incentive? A $50.00 gift certificate to Lowe’s. Watch for details in the next newsletter.

Christmas in October??? As I write this article, there are only 112 days ‘til Christmas! Now I know you are probably more interested in the 54 days until Halloween or the 80 days until Thanksgiving. But I couldn’t wait to tell you about the Progressive Christmas Caroling Party being planned for Hill Country Estates Dec. 10th. You will be receiving more information as December approaches but the idea is for a “starter” group to meet at the Harrell’s home at dusk and progress around the neighborhood spreading Christmas cheer by serenading homes on each street with Christmas carols and Holiday favorites. Each family serenaded will be invited to join the “party” along the way, and we will be rewarded by volunteers serving drinks and nibbles on porches or driveways throughout the neighborhood. So dust off your guitar or your harmonica or your accordion or your? ? ? and plan to join in the Holiday fun. We are looking for host/hostesses who would like to provide simple refreshments along the way, so contact Judy Harrell (301-0010 or [email protected]) for information. This is a whole family event, so mark your calendars now to help Ring and Sing in the Season! (No auditions are required and off-key singers are welcome! (Ho-Ho!)

Have you had your heater checked out for the upcoming season? Now’s the time to do it before the first cold snap hits!

Hill Country Estates/Westview Estates HCEHOA Forms New Committees At the HCEHOA meeting in July, the members voted to form two committees to research possible options and report back to the HCEHOA. Document Review Committee: This committee was formed for the purpose of reviewing the documents that govern HCE and HCEHOA and of making recommendations on needed changes. The committee is composed of Mark Bentley, Daloma Armentrout, Maurine Poe, Robert “Buddy” Ferrell, and Marlene Warner. The plan is to start with the Bylaws (the easiest to change), move to the Articles of Incorporation, and finally to the deed restrictions (hardest to modify). At the end of the project, the committee will give its recommendations to the HCEHOA officers for consideration. Anyone having suggestions is asked to contact any of the committee members to pass their ideas along. Traffic Calming Committee: This committee was formed for the purpose of evaluating the speed of traffic through HCE, especially on Midwood Parkway. The committee is composed of Judy Harrell, Gary Anderson, Tim Dowdle, and Paula Jones. The committee has an ongoing e-mail discussion and has communicated with representatives from both the City of Austin and Travis County. Both the City and County agree each has a share of jurisdiction over Midwood Parkway. Further, both agree that jurisdiction over Midwood Parkway through

HCE lies with Travis County. The City’s jurisdiction extends from SH71 to a point just north of Summer Sky. In addition to the e-mail discussion, the committee plans to have one or two face-to-face meetings. A preliminary report will be presented to the HCEHOA officers for further direction. We hope to have a final report ready for the next HCEHOA meeting. A couple of items that readers may find interesting: (1) It is against Texas law to use stop signs for traffic speed control. (2) If we request a speed limit to be evaluated, the procedure is based on something called the “prudent driver principal”. This principal assumes that 85% of drivers are driving “prudently”, so a speed limit is set at the point where 85% would not be speeding. If we were to request a speed limit evaluation, the limit conceivably could be raised above the current 35 MPH.

Didjaknow ....Seth Harp, son of Cynthia and Steven Harp on Dawning Court, wrote an essay that was a finalist in the University of Texas’s new Keene Prize for Literature. Seth’s essay, entitled “The Long Way Home”, is about his military experiences during his 15 months in Iraq; the essay was the cover story for the September/October issue of “The Alcalde” magazine, published by the Texas Ex-Students’ Association. Members of the Texas Exes can view it online. …. The Austin American-Statesman newspaper ran a terrific article about Chad Schroeder (son of Dixie and Ron Schroeder, on Midwood Parkway). Chad’s a senior at Texas A&M, and he’s a wide receiver on the Aggies’ football team. Just don’t tell him to “break a leg” (for luck) this year! ….We’re a traveling bunch of folks! Ask Mark and Charlsa Bentley (on Midwood Parkway) about their trip to Peru to see Machu Picchu. Ask CR and Amanda Miertschin (on Bright Star) about their Alaskan cruise. Ask Faith and Fred Andrews (on Murmuring Creek) about their trip to the Chicago Air & Water Show on Lake Michigan .….Jayne and Tim Wooten (on Midwood Parkway) stayed home this summer to remodel their upstairs. This awesome duo of do-ityourselfers can outdo most professionals—just ask them to show you their beautiful stained concrete floor (among their other projects)! ....The Y Restaurant (on Highway 71) recently made Rob Balon’s brunch recommendations list. (Balon is the Food Critic for Fox 7 News and 590-KLBJ-AM, and he has a website “DiningoutwithRobBalon. com”.) You can go casual (shorts and t-shirts) to breakfast there; you order from an extensive menu (from pancakes to omelets, plus about 47 other delicious items); you can watch sports on multiple televisions out on the patio; and I can tell you it’s a great deal in price as well as taste and atmosphere! …. Say a big “hello” to our new HCE neighbors, John and Deann Doonan and daughter Sarah (on Bright Star). The Doonans moved here from the Houston area. Welcome, Doonan Family! …. November is a big election month. You can find lots of good information about candidates, voting regulations and places, etc. at the website for League of Women Voters Austin Area (http:// lwvaustin.org/) and the Travis County Go Voters website (http://www. traviscountytax.org/goVoters.do). Remember, October 10 is the last day to register to vote for the November 7 election. …. The University of Texas Police Department offers a 16-hour women’s self-defense class that is FREE for UT students, faculty, staff, and dependents. See http://www.utexas.edu/police/rad for more information and to register. The “Didjaknow” column is a monthly collection of random information and observations by your newsletter editors. We’re always looking for interesting tidbits that may not be big enough for a full story but nevertheless deserve the spotlight. Please send your contributions for this column to [email protected].
