weekly focus: language café

congregational care

Thursdays (Beginning Sept. 6) | 6:30pm – 8:00pm | | Gathering Place The Language Café is an informal gathering of English speaking volunteers and our new to English speaking guests. We offer a friendly environment to these individuals while engaging in casual conversational to help them practice their language skills. We strive to live out Ephesians 2:10 which says, “we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” Volunteers are the backbone to this ministry. If you are a Christian, can listen and converse in English, and are willing to patiently develop a relationship, give Language Café a try!

RECENTLY HOSPITALIZED PRAYER LIST If you have been hospitalized, or anticipate hospitalization, and would like to be added to the prayer list, please call the church office at 9569377.

Details about the Café: • The Language Café will begin meeting again on September 13. • This is not ESL, just casual conversation. Very little training is necessary. • Regular attendance from a volunteer is appreciated but not required. • Ages 16+ can volunteer – some of our most effective volunteers are seniors. • People from Asia, Europe, Middle East and the Americas attend, get acquainted, and feel at home in our culture. • Most of our guests are students, but we also meet refugees and immigrants, Christian, Buddhist, Muslim and atheist. Yes, God brings the world to us on Thursday evenings! • Guests expand their English, get to know real Americans, and build friendships built on love, acceptance, and support with our volunteers. Come to the Connection Point after the service to hear stories of how God moved in the Language Café last year. We look forward to seeing you there! Gary and Linda Rodenburg ([email protected])

Mary Free Bed: Dave Bowman BEREAVED We extend our Christian sympathy to Rick Langerak at the homegoing of his wife, Connie Sue Langerak, on August 20. THANK YOU Thank you for the prayers and support during the passing of my mom, Joyce Welling. The cards, flowers and meals were greatly appreciated. Special thanks to the worship department for all their love and support during this difficult time. As was shared at her memorial service, “Mom has left the building.” Mark & Bethany, Ian, Ethan, Emma Welling

Connect With Our Ministry to International College Students - September 9 Join us in the Connection Point on September 9 to hear how your family can connect with an international student studying in the Grand Rapids area. If you are an international college student studying in Grand Rapids, please come to the Connection Point to hear how you can get assigned to a friendship family. WOMEN SERVING AS DEACONS UPDATE Calvary Church’s elders believe God is leading our church to further explore opening the role of deacons to women. This spring we held a series of teaching sessions with Pastor Jim examining key biblical passages on the role of deacons in the church. Visit calvarygr.org/ womenasdeacons for a video of this teaching, along with answers to FAQs, supplementary content on this topic, and information about next steps. If you have any questions, please email [email protected]. WORSHIP SERVICE OPPORTUNITY: PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE During our next sermon series in Isaiah, we will be incorporating an extended time of prayer, Prayers of the People, during the Sunday morning service and are looking for different individuals in the congregation to pray each week. We are seeking a wide variety of volunteers, ages five and up. If you are interested in participating, contact Andy Crowder ([email protected]).
