CONGREGATIONAL PRAYER TIME

The celebration of the Lord’s Supper nourishes our faith and stirs our imaginations to perceive the work of God and the power of the Gospel more clearly. It is an act that helps pave the way for revival and renewal. East Cooper Baptist Church welcomes to the Lord’s Table all who have trusted in Jesus Christ as Savior. If you are uncertain where you stand in your relationship to Christ, or are not ready to take the Lord’s Supper today, please allow the communion elements to pass and use this time to seek the Lord in prayer.

TAKING OF COMMUNION OFFERTORY PRAYER

LOVE LUSTRES AT CALVARY

A PURITAN PRAYER FROM THE VALLEY OF VISION My Father, Enlarge my heart, warm my affections, open my lips, supply words that proclaim ‘Love Lustres at Calvary.’ There grace removes my burdens and heaps them on thy Son, made a transgressor, a curse, and sin for me; There the sword of thy justice smote the man, thy fellow; There thy infinite attributes were magnified, and infinite atonement was made; There infinite punishment was due, and infinite punishment was endured. Christ was all anguish that I might be all joy, cast off that I might be brought in, trodden down as an enemy that I might be welcomed as a friend, surrendered to hell’s worst that I might attain heaven’s best, stripped that I might be clothed, wounded that I might be healed, athirst that I might drink, tormented that I might be comforted, made a shame that I might inherit glory, entered darkness that I might have eternal light. My Savior wept that all tears might be wiped from my eyes, groaned that I might have endless song, endured all pain that I might have unfading health, bore a thorny crown that I might have a glory-diadem, bowed his head that I might uplift mine, experienced reproach that I might receive welcome, closed his eyes in death that I might gaze on unclothed brightness, expired that I might forever live. O Father, who spared not thine own Son that thou mightest spare me, All this transfer thy love designed and accomplished; Help me to adore thee by lips and life. O that my every breath might be ecstatic praise, my every step buoyant with delight, as I see my enemies crushed, Satan baffled, defeated, destroyed, sin buried in the ocean of reconciling blood, hell’s gates closed, heaven’s portal open. Go forth, O conquering God, and show me the cross, mighty to subdue, comfort and save.

PROMISED SONG CYCLE FOR THE EASTER SEASON

A SONG OF PROMISE The Church in Corporate Worship

MARCH 6, 2016

Our first of five themed services in our SONG CYCLE FOR EASTER, today we celebrate the PROMISE of our Redemption through the power of the cross. Please use the following prayer to prepare your hearts for worship:

REFLECTION

O Promise Keeping God, You alone can bring into order the unruly wills and affections of our hearts.

The formal object of faith is the Divine Promises, it is not the things promised in the first place, but God Himself in His essential excellencies, of truth, or faithfulness and power. -- John Owen

Grant us Your grace to love what You command and desire what You promise; that, among the swift and varied changes of the world, our hearts may surely there be fixed where true joy and peace are found. You promised a Redeemer. You promised us life. You promised us peace. You delivered.

THOUGHTS FOR WORSHIP PREPARATION

Hark, the glad sound! the Savior comes, The Savior promised long; Let every heart prepare a throne, And every voice a song. On Him the Spirit, largely poured, Exerts His sacred fire; Wisdom and might, and zeal and love, His holy breast inspire. He comes the prisoners to release, In Satan’s bondage held; The gates of brass before Him burst, The iron fetters yield. He comes the broken heart to bind, The bleeding soul to cure; And with the treasures of His grace To enrich the humble poor. Our glad hosannas, Prince of Peace, Thy welcome shall proclaim; And Heav’n’s eternal arches ring With Thy belovèd Name. -- Phillip Doddridge

You are faithful to all Your promises nad loving toward all You have made. The work which His goodness began, May the Lord draw us to His promises today, through His promised One, and may true worship and faith spring alive as a result.

the arm of His strength will complete; His promise is Yea and Amen, and never was forfeited yet. Things future, nor things that are now, nor all things below or above, Can make Him His purpose forgo, or sever my soul from His love. -- Augustus Toplady

Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for Amen. us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree”— so that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we might receive the promised Spirit through faith. -- Galatians 3:13-14 This, the pow’r of the cross: Christ became sin for us; Took the blame, bore the wrath— We stand forgiven at the cross. -- Keith Getty and Stuart Townend

MESSIAH Micah 5:1-4 Micah alternates back and forth between threats of doom and promises of hope. Probably the reason the book is arranged like this is to make the point that where God and His poeple are concerned, there is always hope, even in the darkest catastrophe. So there is great hope ahead for Israel if they will “turn and do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with their God.”

Any Jew, hearing Micah predict the coming of a Ruler out of Bethlehem who would feed his flock in the strength of the Lord, would think immediately of two people: David and the coming son of David, the Messiah. What Micah is doing is reasserting the certainty of God’s promise to David. The certainty of this promise comes not at a time when Israel is rising to power but at a time when Israel is shrinking to oblivion. You can tell how firmly someone believes God’s promise by whether it gives him strength and hope when life caves in around him. And Micah, it appears, never wavered. He knew God would keep His promise. There are not many things in our lives that are sure and unshakable. And the older we get, the less sure and the more shakable everything around us becomes, because our very lives become fragile. But rest assured... God keeps His promises. And there is nothing more firm in all the world. [Thoughts on Micah 5, John Piper]

THE MORNING WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS VIDEO

SCRIPTURE CALL TO PRAISE MICAH 5:1-5

Now muster your troops, O daughter of troops; siege is laid against us; with a rod they strike the judge of Israel on the cheek. But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are too little to be among the clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel, whose coming forth is from of old, from ancient days. Therefore he shall give them up until the time when she who is in labor has given birth; then the rest of his brothers shall return to the people of Israel. And he shall stand and shepherd his flock in the strength of the LORD, in the majesty of the name of the LORD his God. And they shall dwell secure, for now he shall be great to the ends of the earth. And he shall be their peace. -- Micah 5:1-5

HYMN OF PRAISE

LET US LOVE AND SING AND WONDER [ALL SAINTS OLD]

GRACE AND PEACE The gospel that we have for the world— for our lost dad or sister or neighbor or classmate or colleague or unreached people group— the gospel that we have is the good news that God purchased peace by the death of his Son and offers it to sinners who believe in Jesus. We have the good news that God’s omnipotent wrath against sinners has been taken away through the death of Jesus for sin. And everyone who believes is reconciled to him freely by grace. And in the place of enmity comes peace. And there is nothing sweeter in all the world than to be at peace with God. “But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near in the blood of Christ For he is our peace, who has made us both one and has broken down the dividing wall of hostility . . . and might reconcile us both to God in one body through the cross, thereby bringing the hostility to an end. And he came and preached peace to you who were far off [Gentiles!] and peace to those who were near [Jews!]; for through him we have access in one Spirit to the Father.’ Ephesians 2:13-18 The good news of peace is that when Christ died and shed his blood for sin, two kinds of enmity were overcome. The enmity between God and repentant sinners was brought to an end. And the enmity between races and factions in Christ was brought to an end. So Christ became our peace. That is, by grace, the gospel of peace. [John Piper]

THE MORNING PRAYER OF PRAISE THE AFFIRMATION OF FAITH BELGIC CONFESSION, ARTICLE 23

Leader: What do you believe about your forgiveness? People: We believe that God forgives our sins because of Jesus Christ and his sacrifice. Through Jesus, God grants us righteousness apart from works. Leader: How do you come by such forgiveness? People: We are justified freely or by grace through redemption in Jesus Christ. Therefore we cling to this firm foundation, giving all glory to God, humbling ourselves, and recognizing ourselves as we are; not claiming righteousness by our own merits but leaning and resting on the obedience of Christ. Leader: Does this forgiveness give you peace with God? People: This is enough to cover all our sins and to make us confident, freeing the conscience from the fear, dread, and terror of God’s judgment, without doing what our first father, Adam, did, who trembled as he tried to cover himself with fig leaves.

SONG OF POWER

THE POWER OF THE CROSS Oh, to see the dawn Of the darkest day: Christ on the road to Calvary. Tried by sinful men, Torn and beaten, then Nailed to a cross of wood. This, the pow’r of the cross: Christ became sin for us; Took the blame, bore the wrath— We stand forgiven at the cross. Oh, to see the pain Written on Your face, Bearing the awesome weight of sin. Ev’ry bitter thought, Ev’ry evil deed Crowning Your bloodstained brow. Now the daylight flees; Now the ground beneath Quakes as its Maker bows His head. Curtain torn in two, Dead are raised to life; “Finished!” the vict’ry cry. Oh, to see my name Written in the wounds, For through Your suffering I am free. Death is crushed to death; Life is mine to live, Won through Your selfless love. This, the pow’r of the cross: Son of God—slain for us. What a love! What a cost! We stand forgiven at the cross.
