AUGUST 2015

God-stories Calvary hosted several Arts Fest outreaches this year. I didn’t have high expectations, but God far exceeded those expectations. Through simple hospitality at CommonPlace, we had great conversations and were able to demonstrate the love of Jesus through practical acts of kindness. CommonPlace is designed to be a connecting spot and that’s exactly what happened Arts Fest weekend!

the simple water bottle, a spiritual conversation started … we talked for a long time about redemption. He has a long history of partying and making poor decisions. Through tears, he started to believe that God could still love him despite his bad choices. He showed up at Midtown on Sunday morning and came back to CommonPlace afterwards to talk after it. God is pursuing this man!

Through sidewalk chalk, poster board, and talking with random people on the sidewalk, we were able to invite people into CommonPlace. Hundreds of people were in and out of CommonPlace during Arts Fest! People were amazed that our services were free and that the space was provided by Calvary.

We didn’t do anything extravagant during Arts Fest. Through our simple acts of kindness, people were blessed and pointed toward Jesus. It was a good reminder for me that God works even when we don’t have much to offer. God will use anything to bring Himself glory and draw people to Himself, even a water bottle.

We passed out over 350 bottles of water to CommonPlace guests and people passing by. We hosted live music on Friday and Saturday nights and had an audience of 60 people on both nights!

~ Kendra Gettig, Outreach Director and a Calvary Midtown family member seeking to live a life without walls.

Sunday morning, we hosted an artist breakfast. We had a great turn out - 80 artists came! Several of the artists made comments that they really appreciated the hospitality!

Community and their Calling.

God-stories When we were preparing to leave State College, we agreed that we would tithe all of the money that we made selling our furniture to the One Fund. We hadn’t been very consistent with tithing and the sermon series (ahem, Holy Spirit...) at the time put that idea in our minds and hearts. After deciding to do this, it felt as though the process of selling our things was smooth and stress-free, which is a huge blessing! We were able to donate $1800 to the One Fund and felt excited about the things that God would be able to do with that through Calvary. While that is good, moving across the country is expensive and refurnishing an apartment is not cheap either. In other words, we could have really used that money! Once we got to Colorado with only the clothes, books and kitchen stuff that we could fit in our two cars, the reality of having to refurnish our apartment became a little overwhelming. But every time I got overwhelmed, I felt God’s peace because we had given the process up to Him and He provided in real, tangible ways. First, my parents had a change in plans that allowed them to come out and help us settle in. Second, during their time here we had a number of small scenarios that would seem like coincidences if we

didn’t have the perspective that God was taking care of the details. A friend brought over a shelf that fit perfectly into an oddly shaped space. A garage sale down the street provided much of the furniture and odds-and-ends that we needed, including a beautiful old armoire. In paying at the garage sale, we found that we had EXACTLY enough cash ($72) for what we wanted to buy. In the end, a process that could have been hugely stressful was a reminder that God can take care of the smallest details in life, if we let Him. It’s not to say that He will make everything in life run smoothly, but I think it’s important to share and celebrate the small God stories that can happen when we give it up to Him. We’re missing State College and Calvary but are excited about this new step! ~Tina and Nick Jackson, Calvary 1250 family members seeking to live a life without walls.

MARCH 2015

God-stories In September 2010 my stepfather committed suicide. I was 16 years old and felt responsible. I prayed for the needs of my family, their comfort and our happiness. I prayed for a miracle. Looking back, I realize that I didn’t have much of a relationship with Jesus; but it was a start. In August 2013, I started my current job and a year later a woman named Erin joined our staff. We became fast friends. Working with someone so awesome made time fly!

A few months ago, we became even closer when Erin’s father committed suicide. It was very hard to watch her cope with the grief. I tried to keep the balance of being supportive and giving her the space I knew she needed. One evening we got caught up at work talking and crying together. It was a comforting step in the grieving process for both of us. Erin invited me to a Bible study called Heart-to-Heart. I made the necessary arrangements for a babysitter so that I could go with her knowing she didn’t want to go alone. On my way to the study, I asked myself, “Why are you going to a church thing?” I told myself that I didn’t “need” to go, Erin knew I loved her. Honestly, I was only going to support her. I had no interest in going to this group, going to

church, or figuring out God. The lesson that night, “God’s Blueprint for Healing a Hurting Heart” was absolutely profound!!! By the end of the lesson, I was crying and believing that this could not only be the most amazing coincidence but also that I may have found Someone who loved me and could fix my hurting heart! One night Sherilyn explained the gospel to me and I trusted Jesus for salvation. Ever since, I’ve been growing in my relationship with Him and my roots are being grounded in the Word of God! I’m so thankful for the opportunities that have been given to me and that Erin brought me to Heart-toHeart. It was absolutely life-changing and every time I spend time with Jesus, my life changes more. I will follow Jesus anywhere that He may lead, for through Him I can do all things! ~ Arika Robinson, a Calvary 1250 family member seeking to live a life without walls.
