From our minister to students…

The summer 2005 was an exciting time in my life. I was wrapping up my freshman year of college. For the first time in my life, I really had a sense of independence due to the fact that I was no longer living under my parent’s roof. I had done well in all my classes and had gotten accepted into living in the honor’s dorms my sophomore year. One of the biggest excitements in my life during that time was Star Wars Episode III premiered in May of 2005. As I said, life was pretty good. I was even getting ready to spend my first significant amount of time away from home. Yes, I had stayed in the dorms the past year but Co-Lin Community College was only 35 minutes from my parents’ house so I still had that security blanket to fall back on. However, the last week in May I flew to Arizona to spend the next three months doing mission work with that Grand Canyon Baptist Association. During that summer, myself and a college freshman from Southern Mississippi were partnered up and traveled all across Northern Arizona. We spent a week at a time in several smaller churches to help them put on their VBS services, we spent a week in San Diego (I know, not AZ) where the Arizona Baptist Convention held their week-long youth camp, and we spent almost two weeks doing tourist ministry at the Grand Canyon. On top of getting to preach at their chapel on a few mornings and passing out waters and doing relational ministry with the guests, we actually got to hike to the bottom of the canyon, camp out for the night, then hike out the next day. If you’ve never hiked the Grand Canyon, the one piece of advice I can give you is that it is SIGNIFICANTLY easier to hike down than back up. We were given packs of electrolytes to mix in with our water that we drank and told if we didn’t mix it together and just drank the water straight, we could give ourselves water poisoning. When I got back to the lodge the next evening I looked that up because I had never heard of it. Sure enough, it’s a thing. You can drink so much water that it dilutes the electrolytes in your blood causing neurological issues. You may be asking yourself, “Clint, why are you giving me a health and public service warning?” I got to thinking about water poisoning a lot after I found out what it was and was a little blown away by something God meant to be good for us becoming so dangerous. I realized soon after that many things God created and intended for good can become detrimental and dangerous if we abuse it. 1 Corinthians 10:31 says, “So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all for the glory of God.” Anything can be twisted and perverted to point us away from God. Even Scripture can be twisted. Check out the temptation of Jesus in Matthew 4. I challenge you this week as you go through your day to day schedule, look at what you do and truly ask yourself, “Am I glorifying my God in this?” If not, I encourage you to either change your attitude or change your activity. Give God the glory in all things, and you will see Him shining through you.

Memorial flowers The flowers in the Sanctuary today are in memory of Mrs. Delphine Alley given by Highland Baptist Church.
