About Our Residential Contractor and Remodeler Continuing Education Program
CE Requirements
Each qualifying person (QP) of a licensed residential building contractor, residential remodeler, and residential roofer must complete 14 hours of continuing education per two-year licensure period. Each licensee’s QP must, during each reporting period, complete and report one hour of continuing education relating to energy codes or energy conservation measures applicable to residential buildings. Kaplan provides one hour of energy efficiency in most of its Residential Building, Contractor, and Remodeler continuing education courses. Contractors using the Kaplan initial lead-safe certification course for their continuing education are offered a separate one-hour Energy Hour course, free of charge, so that they meet the minimum biannual education requirements set by the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry. Contractors must show their firm’s EPA Firm Certification to the local building official to obtain a building permit to work on a pre-1978 home.
There is an exception: when a Lead Inspection Report has been prepared by a Certified Lead Inspector or Risk Assessor who finds that no lead-based paint is present.
MN Accreditation
Each course in this catalog has been submitted to the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry for contractor/remodeler continuing education. The Lead-Based Paint Renovation, Repair and Painting Program course fulfills the mandatory eight-hour EPA training requirement, and has been approved for accreditation by the Federal Environmental Protection Agency as well as the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry for contractor continuing education. Each course also includes mandatory energy efficiency education (MN Energy Hour), with the exception of the initial lead-safe certification course.
WI Accreditation
Some courses have been approved by the Wisconsin Department of Safety & Professional Services for Dwelling Contractor Qualifier continuing education. Please visit www.KapRE.com for classes and approval hours.
Kaplan Contractor Education has a wide range of approved classes to meet your continuing education requirements and renew your contractor license. All of our Minnesota Contractor CE courses are approved by the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry for residential contractor and residential remodeler continuing education. We have classes available at more than 20 locations throughout Minnesota, making it easy and convenient to keep your license up-to-date. Each of our live CE courses is developed and presented by experts in the industry. This means each student can expect an engaging classroom environment with dynamic discussions and real-world examples.

2015 Minnesota CE Courses NEW! Contractor and Remodeler Combined Update: 2012 IRC & Codes Changes Major changes are on the horizon for all Minnesota residential contractors and remodelers! Effective January 24, 2015, the 2012 IRC as amended will be adopted in Minnesota. Effective February 14, 2015, Minnesota will adopt a new energy code. These changes involve up to 20 percent of current rules and regulations. In this course, you will learn about administrative rule changes, radon and energy changes, and the adoption of the 2012 International Residential Code. You will also receive valuable data on MNOSHA requirements to help you with your OSHA safety training manual. You’ll learn about universal design and related contractor certifications, which are elements of a rapidly growing market. Finally, you will review contractor registration and look at a whole house moisture case study. Topics Include: • Minnesota Rules, Chapter 1300, administrative rules • Minnesota Rules, Chapter 1303, radon and Minnesota-specific rules • Minnesota Rules, Chapter 1309, adoptions and deletions to 2012 IRC • Minnesota Rules, Chapter 1322, energy • MNOSHA compliance opportunities for contractors • Contractor registration becomes permanent • Universal design and contractor certifications • Whole house moisture case study • Energy Hour

2015 Minnesota CE Courses Winning Strategies for Insurance Claim Work There will always be claimable damage losses to property that will be covered by insurance. Losses could come from fire, water damage, natural disasters, or an unexpected failure of a building component. Many building contractors and remodelers already have the skills, knowledge, abilities, and tools to perform needed restoration work. However, working with insurance claims is different from working face-to-face with a homeowner, mainly because other parties and regulations are involved. This course will highlight and explain the typical processes involved in restoring property back to pre-loss condition. You will learn how to work with the insurance company representative, the homeowner, and the lending institution. If you are looking for another niche to get into, this could be your calling! Topics Include: • Understanding the insurance claim • The fine print: Policy 101 and language • A typical timeline • Appraising and valuing improvements • Dealing with specialists • Getting the money • Increasing your profit margin
All Under One Roof What is driving clients’ needs in today’s market? How do agents and contractors meet those changing needs? This class will expand your vision of the new norms that are becoming widely visible and impacting the motivation of buyers and sellers, as well as the configuration of property in the real estate market. You’ll learn how the changing demographics and economics of recent years have influenced desirability for some types of homes over others. You’ll also see what new types of properties are emerging to meet these multi-generational buyer challenges. This course will help you understand the changes and communicate with these buyers and sellers with specialized needs that few agents know how to adequately respond to. You’ll also gain understanding of fair housing areas that warrant attention. This class embraces the complexity of the client’s situation and helps you create new solutions for today’s most complicated buyers and sellers. Topics Include: • Demographics and the aging population • Multigenerational homes • Elderly housing and medical considerations • Features of the 2020 Smart Home • Adapting current homes to meet new needs • Energy Hour • Fair housing

ATTENTION CERTIFIED RENOVATORS
Your EPA Lead-Safe Certification Expires Every 5 Years!
Are you approaching 5 years since you became EPA lead-safe certified? If so, you will need a 4-hour refresher course to remain a certified renovator. Once your recertification course is completed, your certified renovator status is active for 5 years from the course completion date. If you are close to your 5th year of certification, don’t delay taking the certified refresher course. If you do not complete the 4-hour refresher course before your certification expires, you will need to retake the 8-hour initial certification course.

Initial EPA Lead-Safe Certification & CE Course
Kaplan strongly recommends that first time licensees complete the Lead-Based Paint Renovation, Repair and Painting Program course as your first continuing education course. As a sole proprietor or corporation qualifying person, you will NOT be able to pull a permit to work on a pre-1978 house until you pass this course.
Lead-Based Paint Renovation, Repair and Painting Program This EPA-mandated certification course must be taken by all contractors and remodelers who disturb paint in a home built prior to 1978. This is mandated by the EPA, and fines will be strictly enforced. This 8-hour course, in which you learn by demonstration and 2 hours of hands-on training, teaches you how to recognize and mitigate the presence of lead and assure that lead contaminants are kept safely within the work area. One section of this course is devoted to teaching certified Lead Supervisors how to train their uncertified workers on the construction site. Upon certification, you will be able to approach all aspects of Lead Safe Practices with confidence. The Energy Hour course is provided FREE to contractors who take this course—that means you meet your Department of Labor and Industry requirement for continuing education in 2015.
EPA Lead-Safe Certification—what you need to know • Certification is required for ALL contractors/remodelers working on pre-1978 homes. • August 1, 2011—Minnesota building officials began checking Lead Certification for all building permits pulled on pre-1978 homes. This includes a surcharge to ensure the requirement is enforced.
Competition dictates that contractors pull permits in a timely manner You cannot afford to find that your local building official will not comply until you have been certified. Credits: 8 (MN), 8 (WI) | Tuition: $199 Time: 8:00 am–5:00 pm (MN Energy Hour course offered free of charge to students enrolled in this course)
