Old School  Lesson 1

Creation Bible Verse In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. (Genesis 1:1)

Teacher Enrichment This is the first lesson in the Old School: Lessons from the Old Testament series which examines many well-known stories from the Old Testament. Each week will explore how God is revealed through the events and characters of a Bible story. This series will build a base of Old Testament Bible knowledge for children. God created the world. The Book of Genesis says everything was dark and formless until God acted. God created the light and darkness, the sky, land and oceans, the sun, moon and stars, plants, animals and, of course, humans. After each of His creations, He stopped, took a moment and “saw that it was good.” We can learn from those pauses to stop and see the wonderful, amazing, goodness that is all of God’s creation. While Genesis describes God creating the world over seven days, there is much debate in our world about science versus religion. In the Bible, God did not choose to give us the scientific details of HOW He created, but the Bible leaves no doubt about WHO created. Our world did not come into being accidentally. God planned His work and created with purpose. Through this lesson children will understand that God created everything in the entire world and He considered ALL of it good. Children may ask difficult questions about creation and the account in the Book of Genesis. Answer the questions you can, but don’t be afraid to tell them you do not understand all the details because creation is so incredible. Share your own awe of God’s creation. The important thing is that God knew what He was doing. He is more awesome and powerful than we can comprehend.

Before Class Begins  Place the Sign In sheet and a pen where parents can see it upon arrival.  Place the Joy & Concern cards, Time & Talent cards and pens where students can see them upon arrival.  Check that you have supplies for this lesson: - Arrival Activity, Creation coloring page – 1 per child - Pocket Chart - Creation Pictures - Paper Plates – 1 per child - Creation Wheel Circles – 1 each per child - Brads – 1 per child  Place an arrival activity at each place on the table.

Welcome SUPPLIES: Sign In sheet, Joy & Concern cards, Time & Talent cards, Attendance chart, stickers, pens, Creation coloring page, crayons  Greet each child individually as they arrive. Introduce yourself by name.  Help children find or add their name on the attendance chart. Provide each child  

with a sticker to place in today’s column on the attendance chart. Encourage children to complete a Joy or Concern card if they have a particular joy or concern they would like to express. Collect completed Joy & Concern cards. Encourage children to complete a Time or Talent offering card if they gave their time to God or used their talents to serve God or others during the previous week. Children should keep their own completed Time and Talent cards. If children bring monetary offering, they should keep it with them. Direct children to complete Creation coloring page. Encourage conversation among the children and with you! Get to know the children in your classroom by asking about their week including school, activities and families. Introduce new children to each other and encourage friendships.

Children’s Worship SUPPLIES: Sign In sheet, Joy & Concern cards, Time & Talent cards  The Children’s Worship Leader will direct your class to come to Ruth Hall at 9:20 or      

11:05. Bring the Sign In sheet and completed Joy & Concern cards to Ruth Hall. Hand the Joy & Concern cards to the Children’s Worship leader as you arrive. Have children bring their completed Time & Talent cards and any monetary offering. If additional children arrive while in Ruth Hall, have parents complete the Sign In sheet and remind parents that pickup is in Room 107. Encourage children to participate in Children’s Worship and provide re-direction if necessary. Assist the Children’s Worship leader as needed. At the conclusion of Children’s Worship, have children line up and return to Room 107.

The Lesson SUPPLIES: Creation pictures, pocket chart, paper plates, Creation Wheel circles, brads, glue, crayons, scissors  Gather all the children in a circle on the carpet. As you are able, sit on the floor

with them or use a chair as part of the circle. ASK: Today we learned about God creating the whole world. How many days did it take God to create the whole world? (Six or Seven – God rested on the seventh day) SAY: God created different parts of the world on each day. I have all of these pictures up here and I’d like to put them into the correct days of creation. I’m going to give you each at least one creation picture. While we read the story, we’ll see if we can place these pictures into the right pocket.  Give each child at least one creation picture.  Read the Creation Scripture below.

Old School  Lesson 1

 Stop on each day and have children place the Creation pictures into the pocket for

that day. (e.g. Day One – place Night picture and Day picture into day one pocket) You may need to prompt children (e.g. Does anyone have a picture of the sun?) SAY: Wow! Look at all the things God created! He created everything in the whole world, including you and me! SAY: Today we are going to make a craft to help us remember the creation story.  Show children the sample craft. Demonstrate how to rotate the wheel to reveal     

the days of creation. Have children move from the carpet to seats at the table. Give each child a paper plate and creation wheels. Direct children to color the creation wheels and cut them out, including cutting out the wedge on the Creation circle. Direct children to glue the circle with the numbers to their paper plate. Assist children with attaching the Creation circle using a brad.

Closing  Lead the children in a closing prayer. You may say your own prayer, ask one of the

children to say a prayer or use the one below. God, Thank you for creating the entire world! We are wowed by your amazing creations. Thank you for creating each of us. Amen  If time remains before parents arrive, encourage children to return to their Esther coloring page if they did not complete it. Also encourage conversation between children and with you. This is another opportunity to build relationships with the children in your classroom!

Old School  Lesson 1

Creation Scripture

Creation Genesis 1:1 – 2:3 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was empty, with no form of life. God said, “I command light to shine!” And light started shining. God looked at the light and saw that it was good. He separated light from darkness and named the light “Day” and the darkness “Night.” That was the first day. Add Light and Dark to Day One pocket. God said, “I command a dome to separate the water above it from the water below it.” And that’s what happened. God made the dome and named it “Sky.” That was the second day. Add Cloud (Sky) to Day Two pocket. God said, “I command the water under the sky to come together in one place, so there will be dry ground.” And that’s what happened. God named the dry ground “Land,” and he named the water “Ocean.” God looked at what he had done and saw that it was good. Add Globe (Land and Ocean) to Day Three pocket. God said, “I command the earth to produce all kinds of plants, including fruit trees and grain.” And that’s what happened. The earth produced all kinds of vegetation. God looked at what he had done, and it was good. That was the third day. Add Flower (Plants) to Day Three pocket. God said, “I command lights to appear in the sky and to separate day from night and to show the time for seasons, special days, and years. I command them to shine on the earth.” And that’s what happened. God made two powerful lights, the sun and the moon. He also made the stars. God looked at what he had done, and it was good. That was the fourth day. Add Sun, Moon and Stars to Day Four pocket. God said, “I command the ocean to be full of living creatures, and I command birds to fly above the earth.” So God made the giant sea monsters and all the living creatures that swim in the ocean. He also made every kind of bird. God looked at what he had done, and it was good. That was the fifth day. Old School  Lesson 1

Creation Scripture

Add Dolphin, Bird, Bee to Day Five pocket. God said, “I command the earth to give life to all kinds of tame animals, wild animals, and reptiles.” And that’s what happened. God made every one of them. Then he looked at what he had done, and it was good. Add Frog and Giraffe to Day Six pocket. God said, “Now we will make humans, and they will be like us. We will let them rule the fish, the birds, and all other living creatures.” So God created humans to be like himself; he made men and women. God looked at what he had done. All of it was very good! That was the sixth day. Add Boy and Girl to Day Six pocket. By the seventh day God had finished his work, and so he rested. God blessed the seventh day and made it special because on that day he rested from his work.
