2/3 John • LESSON 7

Introduction “The two brief epistles of 2 and 3 John are the shortest New Testament books…Despite their brevity, both epistles are significant in that they stress the importance and boundaries of loving in the truth…Recognizing that all the readers of his letter faced and always would face a world of lies and deceit, John wrote to call them to live in God’s truth, to love within the bounds of truth, and to be loyal to and look out for the truth….Both books address the issue of believers’ duty to show love and hospitality within the bounds of faithfulness to the truth.” John MacArthur The MacArthur New Testament Commentary, 1–3 John, pp. 211, 215, 239 This semester we are memorizing 1 John 1:5–2:2. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous; and He Himself is the propitiation for our sins; and not for ours only, but also for those of the whole world.”
