And Finally...

Community Expo 2015 The 26th annual Community Expo—a day’s worth of information and entertainment—was held Saturday, October 17 at Sandburg High School. Nearly 2000 people attended the event to discover everything the Orland Park area has to offer—from home improvement and healthcare options to education and community services. Many thanks to our sponsors--Advocate Children’s Hospital, Gerber Collision & Glass, PrintSouce Plus, The Orland Park Prairie--vendors, performers and volunteers. Please turn to Page 7 for a complete list of these fantastic people!

Many thanks to the Community Expo Committee volunteers for their hard work and enthusiasm.

President’s Message Happy holidays!

A big THANK YOU to the businesses who participated in our first Shop OPACC Week Oct. 2531. Hopefully business was a little bit stronger during that week for our members. LaGrange Road, Orland Park. There will be free appetizers and plenty of networking! I’d also like to give another big thank you to the businesses who participated in our annual Community Expo. Congratulations to the Expo Committee on another spectacular job! This

year’s expo was a great way for the community to meet new businesses as well as reconnect with ones they are already familiar with. With the holidays around the corner, we still have a few events coming up. I look forward to seeing everyone at this year’s holiday party from 5-7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 7, at Papa Joe’s Italian Restaurant, 14459 S. LaGrange Road, Orland Park. Don’t forget to bring canned food items for the Orland Township Food Pantry. Every little bit helps! If you are looking for a way to give back during the holiday season, the Orland Township Holiday Program is a great way to help local families out. Stop by the Orland Township office at 14807 S. Ravinia Ave., Orland Park, to adopt a family or person for the holidays. It’s a great opportunity to get the whole office into the holiday spirit by

Mayor’s News and Notes

The Vietnam Moving Wall was in Orland Park October 1-4, part of the village being named a commemorative partner for the US Department of Defense’s observance of the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War.

Thank you to the area businesses that helped sponsor The Wall’s visit and to the hundreds of volunteers who shared this experience with thousands of people throughout the weekend. It was a poignant few days for Orland Park residents of all ages and we are grateful to everyone who helped make it possible. Thank you to the chamber members who celebrated the September 29 ground breaking for the University of Chicago Medical Center being constructed at 143rd Street and LaGrange Road. We are happy that this project is underway in Downtown Orland Park, bringing both construction and other jobs to the village. The holiday season brings a number of village events, created to bring everyone together as a community. The Thanksgiving holiday brings back the very

raising money to purchase items on their list through dress down days, bake sales or anything other fun fundraiser you can create. I know our office has a great time dividing up the list, wrapping the gifts and in some cases, delivering the presents to the families in need. If you want to capture the holiday spirit this season, I don’t think there is a better way to do it than helping local families. For more information, call (708) 403-4222. Most importantly, I remind you to shop local during this holiday season. There are plenty of places to complete your Christmas shopping list here in the Orland Park area. By shopping in the Orland Park area and helping local business owners, you’ll help them to have a brighter holiday season. May you and yours have a season that’s merry and bright! The project includes adding through lanes; intersection improvements including additional turn lanes at key intersections; improved bicycle and pedestrian services; improved roadway alignment and enhancements. When it is done, it will be a magnificent gateway to all that Orland Park offers. In the meantime, we remain grateful for your patience and look forward to this project

The new year will also bring the opening of Mariano’s Supermarket at 142nd and LaGrange Road. The 73,000 square feet facility is expected to debut in early 2016. ShopperTrak, which collects data from some 60,000 retail locations worldwide (about 80 percent of those in the U.S.), expects holiday sales to be up 2.4 percent when compared to 2014. AlixPartners’ is forecasting an increase of between 4.1 percent and 4.9 percent in holiday sales. The forecast is based on 20 years’ worth of retail sales data collected by the Commerce Department.

Why Pre-Arrange Your Funeral?

Submitted by Joyce Bibeau, Kerry Funeral Home Secondly and most importantly pre-arranging your funeral can be a comfort to your loved ones who are left thinking they have to now plan out the funeral arrangements. The funeral director can sit down with your family at the time of your passing and go over every detail.

The majority of people today do not like talking or even thinking about making pre-arrangements for their funeral. You may ask, “Why is it a good idea to pre-plan my funeral?” The answer may lie in whom the pre-planned funeral benefits when you pass. First and foremost, your wishes when pre-planning your funeral can be documented by your funeral director. It can be as simple or detailed as you would like it to be. For example here are some items people choose when pre-planning their funeral; flowers, prayer cards, casket, DVD Slideshow, songs for church or chapel service, etc… The more specific pre-planning details are burial or cremation, wake or no services, veteran cemetery or local cemetery, etc… Then there are those who really are prepared and supply the funeral director with an obituary detailing family members, past achievements and service info related to their wishes. Copying documentation such as veteran discharge papers, birth certificate, life insurance, social security card, etc… will relieve any unanswered questions your family may need to provide but may not fully know the answers to at the time of your passing.

The holiday season can be one of the most prosperous times of year for many

With the potential growth in holiday sales comes the probable increase in retail related crimes. To help protect both area businesses and consumers, the Orland Park Police Department has developed the following holiday safety tips:

This has always led to the family feeling at peace that their loved one’s wishes are being fulfilled as they saw fit. When people pre-plan their funeral arrangements, their families almost every time will say, “Thank goodness my mom, dad, etc… came in to see you ahead of time, it truly made things so much easier on us.” Lastly, depending on what stage of health the person who has pre-planned their funeral is in, the funeral director can provide additional information to the family. The funeral home phone number and address can be given to the hospital, nursing home or hospice nurse, emphasizing that the funeral home is reachable 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This has been proven helpful in the middle of the night when information may not be readily available. If it is just documenting your wishes with pen and paper or pre-paying you funeral expenses due to public aid requirements, your local family owned funeral home can provide you with guidance and advice on how to complete your wishes. It can be as simple as talking on the phone or making an appointment with the funeral director, either way, pre-planning your funeral can give peace of mind and comfort to you and your family.

• Employees and employers should remain alert and observant and greet all customers. • Asking lingering customers if they need help • Watch for suspicious persons and/ or vehicles around the business, especially during opening and closing hours • Shoplifters often work in teams; one will distract staff while the others take items or open tills. • Try to have at least two employees open and close the business especially during the holidays when it is usually dark during closing hours • Try to use the most visible entrance to the business and avoid “back”/secluded entrances when opening and closing the business • Keep store rooms locked when not in use • Report ANY suspicious activity that occurs around the business • Communicate with fellow businesses to foster a relationship that can be helpful in the event of misfortune • Always keep the inside of the store front well lit, especially entrances and exitsKeep small amounts of cash in cash register at all times; frequently removing large amounts • Try not to carry cash out of your business alone or during closing hours • Always arm the alarm system

when the business is closed • Do not keep high value items in the window, as they are a temptation to smash-and-grab. • If you have surveillance cameras, ensure that they are in working order and recording. • If you have signs that state that you have surveillance, be sure to have them in plain view. • Train trusted employees in the operation of the surveillance camera system • Signs which state that you have surveillance cameras can deter people from committing crimes • To protect against employee theft, screen all employees before hiring them – it is the best defense against internal theft. While not every customer who displays these particular behaviors is a criminal, knowing what to look for could help you spot a financial crime before it is too late. Here are a few signs of fraudulent activity: 1. Purchases large amounts of merchandise without regard to size, type, color, or cost. 2. Neglects to ask any questions when making large purchase or rushes you during the sale. 3. Makes multiple purchases throughout the day but leaves in between each transaction. 4. Declines delivery for large items…even when it is free. 5. Multiple cards used from a single IP (Internet Protocol) address (for online transactions). 6. Shipping to a single address, but transactions placed on multiple cards. 7. Multiple transactions on one card or a similar card with a single billing address, but multiple shipping addresses. (online transactions) To help prevent identity theft and credit card fraud please remember to: 1. Request and validate the Card Identification Data (CID) (the threedigit code on the back of the card in the box to the right of the signature panel). 2. Verify the cardholder name, full billing address, email address and phone number. 3. Do not key card information to force through a sale after receiving a declined response on a swiped authorization request. 4. When conducting a refund, If the sale is on a credit card, refund sales on the same card.
