T h i s M o n t h ' s C o v e r . A new high in automatic analysis of alloys has been achieved in laboratories of Aluminum Company of America with the use of quantometers and other direct reading spectroscopic instruments. Alcoa's J. R. Churchill, shown operating a production control quantometer, is one of the leaders of analytical revolution in which analyses of historical import are being replaced by on-the-spot analyses to permit continuous control during metallurgical processes. About 70% of determinations made in Alcoa's plants are handled by direct reading instruments. The one in the photograph automatically produces a written analytical report within two minutes of presenting the sample and will handle all determinations normally required commercially on aluminum alloys.
