Order for the Public Worship of God The Twenty-fourth Day of April, Two Thousand and Eleven

Easter Sunday

8:00, 9:30 and 11:00 a.m. • The Sanctuary As you enter the Sanctuary, please assume a quiet and respectful attitude of worship. Please silence your mobile device.

ORCHESTRAL PRELUDE: “Overture” from Easter Oratorio . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . J.S. Bach EASTER PROCLAMATION. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Andrew P. Wells

Christ is risen! He is risen, indeed! Alleluia! Alleluia! By His resurrection He has freed us from our sins. Alleluia! By His resurrection He has delivered us from death and the grave. Alleluia! Praise the Lord! By His resurrection He has triumphed over the powers of hell. Alleluia! Glory be to God! By His resurrection He has given us new life. Alleluia! Praise be to Christ! By His resurrection we are assured that one day our lowly bodies will be transformed to be like His glorious body. All glory and honor, all power and dominion, be given to our resurrected and exalted Lord Jesus Christ. PROCESSIONAL Hymn: No. 277 “Christ the Lord Is Risen Today”. . . . . Easter Hymn PRAYER OF ADORATION. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . A. Mitchell Moore READING FROM THE OLD TESTAMENT: Job 19:23-27. . . . . . . . . . . D. Todd Erickson

Oh that my words were written! Oh that they were inscribed in a book! Oh that with an iron pen and lead they were engraved in the rock forever! For I know that my Redeemer lives, and at the last he will stand upon the earth. And after my skin has been thus destroyed, yet in my flesh I shall see God, whom I shall see for myself, and my eyes shall behold, and not another. My heart faints within me!

CHORAL RESPONSE: “Christ the Lord Is Risen Again” . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . John Rutter Christ the Lord is risen again! Christ hath broken ev’ry chain! Hark, the angels shout for joy, Singing evermore on high, Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia. He Who gave for us His life, Who for us endured the strife, Is our Paschal Lamb today! We too sing for joy and say Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia. He Who bore all pain and loss Comfortless upon the cross, Lives in glory now on high, Pleads for us, and hears our cry. Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia. Now He bids us tell abroad How the lost may be restored, How the penitent forgiv’n, How we too may enter heav’n. Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia. Thou, our Paschal Lamb indeed, Christ, today Thy people feed; Take our sins and guilt away, That we all may sing for aye, Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia. CORPORATE PRAYER OF CONFESSION. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Darrin S. Anthony

Lord Jesus Christ, crucified for our sins on Calvary’s cross and raised for our justification on the third day that we might live no longer for ourselves but wholly for You, please forgive our selfish hearts, for we have many times failed to walk in newness of life in our thoughts, our words, and our deeds; and renew us that we may joyfully live the resurrected life You won for us and thereby honor and glorify Your Name forever. Amen. INDIVIDUAL PRAYERS OF CONFESSION ASSURANCE OF DIVINE PARDON HYMN OF WONDER: “How Deep the Father’s Love for Us”. . . . . . . . . Stuart Townend

How deep the Father’s love for us, how vast beyond all measure That He should give His only Son to make a wretch His treasure. How great the pain of searing loss. The Father turns His face away As wounds which mar the chosen One, bring many sons to glory. Behold the Man upon a cross, my sin upon His shoulders. Ashamed, I hear my mocking voice call out among the scoffers. It was my sin that held Him there until it was accomplished; His dying breath has brought me life. I know that it is finished.

SOLO RESPONSE: “Alleluia” from Exultate, Jubilate. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . W.A. Mozart Ginger Statom, soloist

I will not boast in anything: no gifts, no power, no wisdom. But I will boast in Jesus Christ: His death and resurrection. Why should I gain from His reward? I cannot give an answer. But this I know with all my heart: His wounds have paid my ransom.

READING FROM THE GOSPELS: John 20:1-18. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Timothy L. Russell (page 906 in pew Bible)

Why should I gain from His reward? I cannot give an answer. But this I know with all my heart: His wounds have paid my ransom.

This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

We consider it a privilege to have our children in worship with us. If your small children become restless and vocal, we invite you to the children’s room especially designed for them at the rear of the Sanctuary. They are also welcome in the nursery. Older children should also be encouraged to come to church prepared to stay in their pew throughout the service.

“Jesus is Lord!”—a shout of joy, a cry of anguish, As He returns, and ev’ry knee bows low. Then ev’ry eye and ev’ry heart will see His glory, The Judge of all will take His children home.

EASTER HOMILY

CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Easter Hymn

Do you ever question God about issues of suffering and tragedy resulting from living in this fallen world? Do you get frustrated that “the bad guys” seem to win all the time? Do you wonder if God has a plan or if He cares whether or not life never seems to work out how we would like for it to or think it should? During our new four-week series in Habakkuk, May 1-22, we will explore what it means for Christians to live lives of bold faith in this fallen world. Join us each Sunday night at 6 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall for “Habakkuk: A Bold Faith for Living.” Note: Sunday Night Worship will not meet tonight.

Paraments For Easter Sunday, the paraments have been changed from the red of Holy Week to the white of Eastertide. On the pulpit fall is embroidered a Latin cross in gold thread. Upon the cross bloom three white lilies with green leaves, signifying both purity and the Trinity. The Bible markers bear the Greek letters Chi and Rho, the first two letters of the Greek word for Christ. The Easter banner is also white and features the same gold cross with lilies, and bears the words “Alleluia” and “Christ is risen.” The procession is led by the processional cross. The custom of processional crosses can be traced back to the sixth century A.D. and reminds us of the sacrifice of our Savior, His redeeming love, and the promise of salvation. This cross bears at its junction the letters IHS, the first letters in the Greek name for Jesus.
