CHANNON AND BIANCA ROE’S NEW LIFESTYLE BOUTIQUE IN OJAI, CALIFORNIA Text by Hannah Martin | Photography courtesy of Nancy Neil Photography

Sustainability is second nature for actor and interior designer Channon Roe and his wife, model and actress Bianca. At their California home in the burgeoning bohemian capital Ojai, they buy goat’s milk and eggs from their neighbors, grow their own vegetables, and furnish their living space with a mix of vintage finds and locally made products. So when a neglected 1920s Spanish-style building they’d had their eye on became available in June, it seemed like the perfect moment to make their own contribution to the local landscape: a lifestyle shop called In the Field, stocked with the mindfully crafted fashions and furnishings—many of them made nearby— that the couple has lived with for years. “We’ve tried to stay true to the way we live,” Channon says. “The space is very conducive to who we are and how we roll.”

“Wherever we are, we’re looking and seeking and trying to find that next beautiful great thing,” Channon says. On their recent cross-country trip home from Telluride Bluegrass Festival, the couple scoured dusty vintage shops and dealers alike, returning with a wealth of one-of-a-kind pieces.

A live-edge dining table by Los Angeles–based Bo Tree Source displays cocktail-table books and home accessories over a vintage Moroccan rug.

Though Ojai is surrounded by mountains, the beach is only a short drive away. Channon, an avid surfer, tapped Santa Barbara shaper Jeff Svoboda of Fabriqué and San Marcos–based Chris Christianson for artful custom-made boards.

Local pottery has a big presence at In the Field, which is stocked with hefty bowls and plates by Ojai-based Karen Scott of Bernscott pottery, Joshua Tree–based Eefje Theeuws

of Materia Lumina, and L.A.’s April Napier. These contemporary pieces mix with vintage wood bowls and studio pottery from the 1970s.

Shelves are stacked with linens from L.A.-based Matteo, a longtime favorite of Channon and Bianca (“We’ve slept on their sheets since the company began,” Channon says), and towels by Creative Women.

Through arching doorways that mimic a Spanish adobe style, a pair of reupholstered Milo Baughman club chairs joins an antique Persian rug.

For the children’s corner (complete with a teepee), playful, woven-nylon chairs from

L.A. designers Pacific Wonderland riff on midcentury macramé.

“We really thought hard about what we could bring to town,” Bianca says. “There was a void in the market, especially for menswear. I had to travel to buy Channon a Father’s Day present.” In the Field stocks brands like Apolis, Filson, Mister Freedom, and Quoddy Shoes.
