Project Outline

Woodpecker Hall Primary Academy is the first free school to be built in Edmonton since the Government launched the free schools programme in 2010. Built on behalf of Cuckoo Hall Academies Trust, which also manages Cuckoo Hall Academy in Edmonton, the new school will be home to 420 pupils, as well as offering 60 part time nursery places. Located next to its sister school, Cuckoo Hall Academy, on the site of the now demolished Salisbury secondary school, the building is scheduled to open for the Autumn 2012 term.

Trapeze No. 2

Kershaw Mechanical Services had used Gripple products previously, however, this was the first time they had used the Pipe Bracket. Usually opting for the time consuming, traditional method of threaded rod to suspend services, Gripple hanging solutions provided Kershaw with the opportunity to hang a wide variety of pipe work, ducting and containment easily, efficiently, safely and securely. Woodpecker Hall Primary Academy is designed to be as energy efficient as possible. Leadbitter aim to achieve a BREEAM rating of very good. Using Gripple during the build is one way to achieve this rating.

Duct Work The Gripple Duct Trapeze was used to install the rectangular duct work. The Gripple Duct Trapeze uses screws or pop rivets to secure directly to the ducting, it is independently tested and conforms to DW/144 CLASS C. By using the Duct trapeze and wire instead of threaded rod and channel the advantages included: no hot works permits were required; working at height was reduced; installation times were reduced and CO2 savings were made (approximately 1.2kgs CO2 saving per meter of wire rope specified compared to threaded rod).

Quick installation guide

Containment The containment and pipe brackets were installed using the Trapeze No. 2. It is a purpose-made single channel Gripple, ideal for single or multi-tiered installations. The tapered design accommodates all channel slot sizes and discreetly fits inside the channel.

ADVANTAGES Time • Installation faster than traditional methods • Pin allows for rapid adjustment

Health & Safety

• Pre-fits into channel to ease working at height • Load rated at 45kg with a safety factor of 5:1

Storage • Less storage space required compared to threaded rod

Pipe Work The Gripple Universal Clamp and Pipe Bracket were used to suspend a wide variety of pipe work in a range of sizes. The Universal Clamp replaces more than 11 different pipe ring sizes and is 6 times faster than traditional methods. By using the Gripple Pipe Bracket installation is even quicker as the clamps were pre-installed at our factory in Sheffield. The brackets were suspended using wire rope and the Trapeze No.2 but can also be bolted directly in to the soffit, wall and even the floor. During the project a break-in occurred on site. Thieves attempted to remove the copper pipe, but thanks to the Gripple system they abandoned their endeavour as without the release key they could not cut the wire rope on the pipe clamps.

Advantages Time • Supplied in ready to use pre-assembled kits • Quick, simple adjustment between pipe on the bracket or via the wire around the pipe Health & Safety • No tools or hot works required for installation Waste • No left over components on site

Why Gripple? “Change isn’t something that is always strived to achieve, but the Gripple system is a great improvement. It is excellent for cleanliness, time saving and safety, so the change to Gripple was an easy choice to make” Paul Carey, site manager - Kershaw
