DENTAL AVATARS:THE KEY TO UNLOCK THE FUTURE OF DENTAL EDUCATION? MANJU G. GERBER, DDS, MS CLINICAL ASSISTANT PROFESSOR- DEPARTMENT OF ENDODONTICS NEW YORK UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF DENTISTRY ADEA ANNUAL SESSION 2015
INTEGRATION OF EDUCATIONAL LEARNING WITH GAMING TECHNOLOGY: WHAT NEEDS EXISTS?? • Need exists to create an interactive web-based simulation platform students are already comfortable using (digital generation) to engage students to active learning • Need exists for standardized cases students don’t see in a real clinical setting • Need exists for cases to be repetitive for retention of learning (includes time limità attention span and memory retention from traditional methods)
AIM 1: DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT Virtual Patient Simulation case structure: • Easy to access without personal identifiers • Visually engaging, interactive, brief scenarios • Learn at their own pace (self-directed learning) • Cases need to have different degrees of complexity (learning gaps///confidencecompetence gap) • Learning held in a safe environment without harming a live patient ( less anxiety/aversion to use VP Simulation) • Module provides method for formative and summative feedback to alter format
AIM 2: IMPLEMENTATION • Resources available at institution ($, support staff, etc) • Faculty, Students, and Administration need to have same goal that fit into institution’s mission • Module must have “Ingredients” students find clinically relevant and builds on existing knowledge • Faculty needs training to author customizable cases (time required) • Bloom’s Taxonomy, Miller’s Pyramid, RIME Rubric
AIM 3: EVALUATION • Used to determine strengths, weaknesses of program • Pre-Assessment and Post-Assessment based on learning objectives • Formative and Summative Assessments • Feedback commentary about modules • Track own progress (self reflection of areas of weakness/strengths; outcomes that connect clinical decision making to patient’s treatment outcomes)
