A Stroll Around the New Town Start : Schlossplatz Duration: approx. five hours End: Albertplatz

This walk focuses on the Innere Neustadt (Inner New Town), which has been characterized as »smart, polished and classy«. Königstrasse is full of fine small shops, and the craft studios in the Kunsthandwerkerpassage are well worth a look.

From the eMMAltstadt, take Augustusbrücke (bridge) across the Elbe; the rBlockhausis immediately to the left, on the Neustadt side. tNeustädter Markt is dominated by the uM Goldener Reiter (Golden Cavalier), a statue of Augustus the Strong in the style of a Roman emperor on a rearing steed. From Neustädter Markt follow Hauptstrasse, a pedestrian zone planted with plane trees. The iMM Kunsthandwerkerpassagen (arcades with art and craftwork) at Hauptstrasse 9–19 (“MARCO POLO p. 244) are a must. The oKügelgenhaus (Hauptstrasse 13; “Neustadt, Innere Neustadt) is a museum devoted to the Romantic period. In the rear courtyard of house no. 19 the Societätstheater, originally founded in 1750, is the oldest civic theatre in Germany. It's nice to relax in the theatre's small Baroque garden, or in the cosy café M Café L'art de vie (“p. 121). The Antiques and fashion in the Kunsthandwerkerpassagen

walk continues to the pDreikönigskirche (Church of the Three Kings); from the church tower there is a view over the Neustadt roofs all the way to the Altstadt. At Rähnitzgasse 8 is Kunsthaus Dresden, the amunicipal gallery for contemporary art. (“Neustadt, Innere Neustadt). The route continues past renovated buildings and little shops to sM Königstraße, , an elegantly restored shopping district, and now Dresden's finest Baroque street. Take some time for a stroll and to look around in the new boutiques and antique shops. The ideal place to round off the walk is M Bülow‘s at Königstr. 14, where simple but delicious meals and excellent coffee with cake from the inhouse patisserie are served (“p. 113). At the end of Königstrasse lies dAlbertplatz, a busy traffic hub. In the middle are two interesting fountains: Stille Wasser (Still Waters) and Stürmische Wogen (Stormy Waves), made in 1894 by Robert Diez. Villa Augustin (Antonstrasse 1) houses the fM Erich-Kästner-Museum, which provides an original approach to the author of children’s books, poet and journalist and allows all generations to explore his work in a playful way.
