Cars601.com launching in April By Kevin Williamson Cars601.com, a customer friendly automotive search site, will be launched by IMPACT on April 1. Cars601.com is a local search site that is powered by print and is part of a national network of locally branded auto search websites. Over 125 publications with a combined three million circulation is currently part of the growing network. Cars601.com makes it easy for customers to find just the car or truck they are looking for close to home. Joe Mathes, a newspaper publisher in Wisconsin who conceived the idea for the new site (which bases its name on local area codes), launched the first site in 2011 when automotive dealers in his market asked him to produce an alternative to the national automotive search sites that were raising their rates but not delivering results compatible with the increased pricing. The automotive dealers also wanted to connect with local buyers first yet still have a national presence. Mathes went to work and designed the first site in his hometown with fewer than 20 dealers on board; his hometown site now has over 80 automotive dealers, and he has launched similar sites

8th Annual Art of Healing raises money for Health Care Foundation
By Linda Cranford The South Central Health Care Foundation is dedicated to improving the health of the Laurel/Jones County community by offering free health care screenings, support groups and other community initiatives. In the past several years local artists and artist across the country and abroad have donated their creative pieces of art to be auctioned to raise funds for the foundation. Saturday night, March 19, the foundation held its 8th Annual Art of Healing Auction and Exhibition fundraiser. Hundreds gathered in the banquet room of the Sanderson Farms Corporate Office for a chance to give to a good cause and take home beautiful paintings, woodwork, jewelry, mixed media, pottery, iron work, hand carved knives, and other types of art. Over 250 pieces of art were donated this year by artists from all over Mississippi and the Pine Belt area, 21 different states in the United States and Spain. Those attending enjoyed food and beverages catered by Southern Style Catering, live music by area jazz musician Charles Carter, a silent art auction and a live art auction. As guests viewed and bid on pieces in the live auction, local artist Mandy Buchanan created a still life painting of flowers which was later entered in the live auction. Cartoonists and caricature artist John Read from Jackson was also on hand drawing caricatures for guests. The live auction was led by auctioneer and preacher Rod Smith. Doug Higginbotham, President and CEO at South Central, welcomed those attending, thanked members of the South Central Board of Trustees for their support, and also thanked the many who donated items and supported the event. He encouraged those in attendance to bid generously throughout the evening, because the proceeds were going to a worthwhile cause. Linda Gavin, Vice President of Marketing and Business Development at South Central Regional Medical Center, introduced the evening’s keynote speakers, Rhonda McNair, LCSW, South Central Behavioral Health Services and local artist Mark Landis, who is known throughout the world as one of the most prolific art forgers who never committed a crime. Prior to showing a trailer of “Art and Craft,” a documentary of Landis’ life of donating over 100 forged paintings of famous 15th Century artists such as Picasso to 49 museums across the U.S., McNair spoke of the importance of mental health. Landis was diagnosed with schizophrenia at the age of 17 after suffering a nervous breakdown at the death of his father. “Most of us do not do a very good job of taking care of our brains,” said McNair. She said that too many people ignore their mental illness and don’t seek help for fear of the stigma associated with mental illness. “Medications and talk therapy can help, but most people think, ‘I do not need therapy, because people will think I’m crazy.’ The truth is, everyone needs therapy. Therapy can come from a variety of outlets, but everyone needs someone to talk to about difficulties in their lives. Think of it like this, the brain is just another organ of the body, like the heart, the lungs, the liver and the kidneys. Most of us go to our health care provider annually for a checkup to make sure all of these organs are functioning properly, however, the brain is many time forgotten. It is one of the most important organs in the body. It needs to be taken care of.” McNair said that no one condones what Landis did, but that he did it to escape from a life of solitude and loneliness and this escapism became an addiction. his deceased father and as a way to please his mother. This first success led to many others. Each act brought Landis the attention and human communication he so desired. For almost 30 years, Landis traveled the U.S. donating his fake paintings to smaller museums often times posing as a priest. In 2008, a museum registrar exposed his schemes to the art community and in 2014 the “Art and Craft” documentary was released. Because he never benefited economically from donating the paintings, his actions are not considered criminal. Although diagnosed with schizophrenia in his teens, many caseworkers believe he suffers more from bipolar. McNair said Landis understands the importance of medication and therapy and has good days and not so good days. Landis now creates his own work of art and donated several pieces to the Art of Healing event in the silent auction. A commissioned work by Landis was also auctioned off in the live auction. The Art of Healing is held each year the last Saturday of March, and is open to the community. The South Central Health Care Foundation accepts tax deductible financial contributions throughout the year. In lieu of flowers, you may make a contribution to the foundation and a card will be sent to the family stating that a contribution was made in memory of their loved one. By Brenda Ingram Once again Smith County will be host to the Magnolia Beef & Poultry Expo whichwill be held on Thursday, April 7, 2016, beginning at 9am. The trade show will take place at the Smith County Ag Complex, located just off Hwy. 35 South in Raleigh. Three topics of interest for cattlemen and poultry farmers will be held beginning at 9am. Dr. Robin Faulkner, Veterinarian for Zoetis will speak on animal health for stockers and cow-calf producers. The door prize will be a mineral feeder donated by Mississippi Farm Bureau. At 10:30am, Dr. Tom Tabler, MSU Extension Professor will speak on water quantity, pressure vs. volume. The door prize will be a brooder donated by Taylorsville Poultry Supply. The grand door prize will be a 3 point hitch, 110 gallon spray rig donated by the Jasper, Newton, Scott, Smith, Simpson and Rankin County Farm Bureau Federation. To be eligible you must attend 2 of the 3 educational seminars.
The last seminar begins at noon on proper handling of cattle. A Priefert headgate will be the door prize and donated by Magnolia Beef & Poultry Expo. The trade show will feature vendors displaying feed, poultry equipment, livestock health, tractors, and Priefert products, just to name a few. Lending institutions will also be on hand to answer any financial questions you may have. The Expo is sponsored by Community Bank in Raleigh and the Mississippi State University Extension Service. It is hosted locally by the following county Extension offices: Smith, Jasper, Newton, Rankin, Scott, and Simpson. Admission is free and open to the public. Local farmers and producers are urged to attend this event for the latest news that concerns the poultry and beef industry today.
