Today, Downtown Bastrop represents a unique blending of the old and the new. Nestled on the banks of the Colorado River, the historic district offers a delightful selection of shops filled with interesting gifts, crafts, books, and antiques. Adding to the charm, a variety of restaurants provide visitors with delicious food and comfortable, friendly atmosphere.

Texas Boot Company, 733 Old Austin Hwy.

www.bastropchamber.com e-mail: [email protected] By the 1830s, Bastrop had become a cradle of rebellion against Mexican rule. Three Bastropians signed the Texas Declaration of Independence, 11 died at the Alamo, and some 60 fought in the decisive Battle of San Jacinto.

The city is named for Philip Hendrik Nering-Bogel, the Baron de Bastrop. A land developer, Nering-Bogel interceded with the Mexican governor to allow Austin to bring colonists to Texas. In 1827, Austin received a grant for the colony at Bastrop.

Bastrop’s historical roots run deep. A rich harvest of classic Texas folklore and architecture exists today. Originally, the site served as a meeting ground for Tonkawa and other Southwestern Indians. It also provided a vital Colorado River crossing on the Old San Antonio Road—El Camino Real. It was not until 1821, however, that Moses Austin journeyed through the area and determined to build a settlement on the site.

During the Spanish colonial period in Texas, El Camino Real, the road between San Antonio and Nacogdoches, crossed The Colorado River where Bastrop is located. Bastrop was named for Philip H. Nering Boegel, the Baron de Bastrop, who aided Moses and Stephen F. Austin in establishing their Texas colonies. Settled as part of Austin’s “Little Colony” of 1827, Bastrop received a Mexican land grant in 1832 platting the town. Numerous Bastrop men fought in the Texas Revolution, and Bastrop was one of the original Republic of Texas counties after Independence in 1836.
