Catholic Church

thePeace PeaceofofChrist Christ InInthe Dear Friends in Christ: One of the more remarkable moments in the gospel is when the disciples implore Jesus “Lord, teach Saint john Vianney us to pray!” (Lk 11.1). One might think that the disciples already knew how to pray. They were no strangers to Catholic Church the synagogue, they were raised as believers, part of the chosen people, descendants of Abraham, sons of the Archdiocese of Galveston — Houston Covenant, they were with Jesus day and night and yet they still wanted to know how to pray. The same could 625 Nottingham Oaks Trail be said for many Catholics as well. There are many who are baptized, raised to believe in God, attend Mass every Sunday and holy day, received a religious education, try to lead good lives and yet still do not know how Houston, TX 77079 to pray. Far too many people confuse having religious thoughts or reading a prayer in a book with actual Tel.: 281-497-1500 prayer! There is a difference. A big difference. Fax: 281-584-2024 Prayer is not the same thing as having a religious thought, it is isn’t just thinking about God and it www.stjohnvianney.org certainly isn’t reading about God or merely the recitation of words as in some kind of incantation. Prayer is ______________________________ not magic. Very simply, prayer is the lifting up of our minds and hearts to God. Prayer is our communication with God from the bottom of our hearts. Structured prayer is a valuable help to give voice to what our hearts PARISH CLERGY long to express. That is why when the disciples asked Jesus to teach them how to pray, he responded by Rev. R. Troy Gately teaching them the “Our Father”. Structured, formal prayer, be it the rosary, a novena, praying the psalms or even the Mass is a wonderful help to our communication with God. But it cannot be just empty words or a Pastor stale recitation of a formula. True prayer is ultimately a conversation between God and ourselves, the lover and the beloved. As Blessed John Henry Newman phrased it, cor ad cor loquitor (heart speaking to heart). Rev. Charles J. Talar There are different kinds of prayer (Blessing and Adoration, Petition, Intercession, Thanksgiving and Praise) Rev. Daniel L. Warden and different forms of prayer (Vocal Prayer, Meditation and Contemplation) but all prayer in its essence is Priests in Residence conversation (listening and speaking) and communion with God. For us to pray, we must remember that the first act of prayer is humility. Pride and prayer do not go Deacons together. To pray, we must humble ourselves before God. We have to be quiet, still our hearts and our minds Dale Steffes and be prepared to listen to Him. Otherwise, there is the temptation to just start talking to ourselves or to Al Vacek confuse the roles and start telling God what He should do instead of listening to what we should do! To be Fred Kossegi faithful disciples, we need to pray every day, not just on Sundays. “Pray unceasingly” (1Thes 5.17) St. Paul Randy Graham teaches. In our prayer, we need to make time to be quiet and to be with God. There is no magic hour for Louis Provenzano prayer but for most of us, the ends of the day are best. In the morning and at night, we should carve out a ______________________________ little time to be with God (be sure to turn off the computer, TV and smart phone). If we put off prayer and wait until the perfect time occurs or when we get enough time in our schedule to get around to it, it doesn’t PASTORAL STAFF happen. Prayer is a deliberate act. It is something we choose and make time for. After we have set aside the time, quieted our minds and hearts of all of the distractions of our day, Adult Forma$on then what? A good place to start is with a daily examination of our lives. We look and see where we are with Yvonne Gill God. We acknowledge His presence in our lives and who He is to us, particularly at that moment. We call to mind our blessings, the blessings of our life or of the day or just of the moment. We then thank God by Youth Forma$on expressing our gratitude for the little things and big things that show us His love and care for us. After our Daniel Marcantel Thanksgiving, we ask God for Enlightenment, that he might illumine our minds and hearts so that we can become more aware of His will for us – in our marriage, in our families, in our friendships, in our jobs and in our Music Ministry discipleship. A third step is asking God to show us how we are honestly doing (Examination). We ask to see Michael Madrid what’s going right and what is going wrong. For those things in which we have failed to live and act as we should and as God would have us act, in humility and honesty, we ask for the Lord’s forgiveness and mercy Pastoral Care/ (Contrition). Lastly, we ask God for His help and grace by improving a particular virtue or by working to Spiritual Life overcome a particular sin or temptation in our lives so that we can be the person that He wants us to be Louis Provenzano (Resolution). Parish Life/ While it would be wonderful to spend an hour every morning and every night in prayer, that is not likely to happen for most of us. One of the biggest mistakes in prayer is trying to do too much all at once. It is Ac$vity Center part of our impatience and pride that we are always trying to do it all and all at once. Before we can run a Richard Fairly marathon, we have to first learn how to crawl and then walk. If you already have a specific time set aside for Social Service prayer, try adding two or three minutes a day. If you don’t have a set time for prayer, begin by making one. Ministries Take five or ten minutes every day. If ten minutes is too much, start with five and slowly and gradually increase the time you spend in prayer. Find a specific place and specific time and make it God’s time. Make it Deborah Montez a daily appointment for you and God to be with each other with no interruptions, rain or shine. He is waiting Business Office on you and wants to hear from you! C.J. Pete Prados In Pace Christi,
