Dear Neighbour, Crossrail Programme – Shenfield Station – Update Network Rail is undertaking essential improvement works in your area as part of the Crossrail Programme, linking Reading and Heathrow in the west to Shenfield and Abbey Wood in the east, via new tunnels under central London. At Shenfield, Network Rail is adding an additional platform (Platform 6) to accommodate the new longer, high capacity trains and will be installing new help points, customer information screens, public address systems and CCTV. Description of works Work continues to re-profile the existing embankment behind May 2016 – May 2017 platform 5 to accommodate the new track, working back towards the southern end of platform 5 and Friars Avenue. Some sections of the embankment will need reinforcement Core working hours: with steel piles, we will recycle redundant sections of rail to Monday-Friday 08:00-18:00 form a base for rock filled gabion baskets. Delivery of materials to site will be by rail where possible, or road via agreed lorry routes, outside of peak times. Normal lorry movements will be between 10am and 3pm, and traffic marshals will be used to ensure safe entry to site.

Trackwork We have started to remodel the existing track sidings at the east of Shenfield Station. The sidings are being remodelled to accommodate the new, longer trains which will come into service in 2017. Much of the work involves the use of engineering trains and rail mounted machinery including

excavators and specialised track equipment. Taking posession of the sidings, some work can be completed during daytime hours, Monday to Friday without affecting train services. Other works will have to be completed during the weekend including overnight activities to avoid disruption to train services. Midweek works adjacent to Hunter Avenue – Earthworks for new south end loop line in the vicinity of Alexander Lane Bridge. Excavation for new overhead line structures adjacent to Gordon Road and Silver Birches.

Hunter Avenue Retaining Wall As part of the installation of new sidings east of Shenfield station we will construct a retaining wall at the top of the railway embankment, indicated by the red highlighted area on the image below. The wall will be constructed of rock filled gabion baskets, secured to the top of existing embankment using approx. 200 steel piles, driven into the ground. Due to the proximity of the operational railway the piling will have to take place at weekends and at night. Whilst each of the piles used will not take as long to install as those used for the overhead line structures, we anticipate significant noise levels from the piling operations. Our site team are currently in the advanced stages of planning the work and estimate starting pile installation in late May to early June. We will write to residents living close to the site with further information on the construction plan when the start date is confirmed.

We apologise for any inconvenience these works may cause. Whilst we do anticipate some of these works to be noisy at times, mitigations are in place to keep noise levels to a minimum. Due to works taking place on operational railway, much of our work has to be carried out at night and weekends when trains are not running for safety reasons. The local authority has been, and will continue to be, consulted through the Control of Pollution Act 1974 (Section 61) process regarding the implementation of the works.
