LESSON #7 JESUS INCURS JEWS’ HOSTILITY OVER SABBATH ISSUE John 4:43-5:47 Subject: Jesus’ Sabbath healing incurs the Jews’ hostility. Please answer these lesson questions for next week prior to watching the Lesson 7 video.

Review 1. Were you able to look at anything in your life differently as a result of your study of the last lesson? Read John 4:43-5:4 Jesus Heals the Official’s Son 2. According to Luke 4:14-30, Jesus began His public ministry in Galilee where he had been rejected rather violently. Why do you think he is now making the decision to return there?

3.

What do you think now caused the more positive response in the people’s attitude toward Jesus?

4.

Explain the significance of the royal official’s tremendous need that he brought to Jesus.

5.

How was the official expressing faith in Jesus, albeit, limited faith?

6.

How did Jesus want to increase the official’s faith and enable him to trust Jesus to act even beyond the man’s expectations?

7.

Have you ever experienced a time when Jesus has done for you even greater than your expectation? Would you be willing to share it with your group?

Read John 5:1-15

Jesus Heals on the Sabbath

Chapter 5 begins a new section in John’s epistle. It is here that John further develops the opposition of the religious leaders to the Lord. In this section we are introduced to a new class of people, “the Jews”. John uses this term almost exclusively to refer to the religious leaders who are opposed to Jesus.

8.

Describe the physical condition of the man in verse 5 and relate his condition to man’s spiritual state apart from Christ. See Romans 5:6, I Corinthians 2:14, II Peter 2:14 and John 6:44 for help.

9.

What is meaningful to you that Jesus’ command (verse 8) was followed by divine enablement (verse 9)?

10. How did the religious leaders (the Jews) show a deeper concern for religious ritual than mercy or awe at the miracle of God’s power and presence with them?

11. How can we be guilty of the same attitude?

Read John 5:16-47 Jesus Gives Life 12. Give the two reasons from this section why the Jews wanted to kill Jesus.

13. What does the relationship of the Son with the Father enable Jesus to do in verses 5:19-30? Find as many points as you can.

14. What does it take to have eternal life according to Jesus in this passage?

15. Give the four witnesses to Jesus with the verses for each.

16. What was the root problem of the Jews’ unbelief according to Jesus?

Reflection and Personal Application 17. In what matter of obedience do you need to “pick up your mat and walk”, trusting God’s enabling to accompany his command?
