Lorain Manor 1980—2007

Lorain Manor’s history began in the early 1920’s as the home of Mr. and Mrs. S.W. Vaughn. It’s location: E. 32nd and Seneca, Lorain, OH. During the 30’s and 40’s it was turned into a multi- family home. In the early 1950’s Ed and Donnabelle Schmitdt bought the home and the Lorain Convalescent Home was established. In the 1960’s they built on an addition to accommodate their growing nursing facility but failed to include a kitchen in the plans. Breakfast was provided by family members and lunch and dinners were preheated in the upstairs of the home and taken down to the residents at mealtimes.

In 1977 The Lorain Convalescent Home was at risk of losing their license from the state along with five other homes in Lorain County. The cause: violations of federal safety standards, ranging from lack of fire doors and fireproofing systems. Seventy-three residents were at risk loosing their home. Donel Sprenger played racquetball with Mr. Schmitdt and a discussion began between the two friends to have Sprenger’s take over the home. In 1980 it became a reality and the process of turning the home into a quality facility began and Lorain Manor was born! www.sprengerretirement.com

In 1998 the 2nd and 3rd floor was added and the facility was renovated to include a new kitchen and dining room. The renovation cost over two million dollars.

With building renovations and new management, Lorain Manor was able to improve overall quality of care and became one of the area’s finest nursing care facilities.

Setting their sites on a new facility in Avon Lake, Lorain Manor was scheduled to close. In 2006 they announced the donation of the building and property to the City of Lorain. In April 2007 Lorain Manor closed it’s doors and the majority of the residents moved into the new Towne Center, Main Street Care Center. Today, it’s the home of LCADA, (Lorain County Alcohol and Drug Abuse Services, Inc.) women’s programs, outpatient programs, residential treatment program and women’s aftercare Programs.
